50 years of innovation
Science Citation Index is 50!
The innovative thinking of Dr. Eugene Garfield, an early founder of
bibliometrics and scientometrics, made us the first and the best in
scientific indexing. His unique way of making connections between
scientific research was the precursor to what is now Thomson
Reuters Web of Science™.
Used by over 7000 organizations around the world
and Thomson Reuters is recognized as the leading
provider of citation based research information.
100% of Top 50 & 96% (96/100) of Top 100 Ranked

The launch of the SciELO Citation Index is part of our commitment to
regional content expansion.
Focusing specifically on BRICK regions, we will continue to partner
with local academic and government organizations to deliver
regionally relevant, multidisciplinary resources that will increase the
discoverability of content from the most rapidly developing regions.
Incorporate African contents into WoK framework
• Regional partner(s) delivers a set of data from the African content as a
baseline and periodically delivers ongoing records in XML format
• Thomson Reuters uploads the source data (article records including cited
references) supplied from regional partners via processing it in WoK data
center
• Results from the African Citation Index would be included in Web of
Knowledge “All Databases” search.

Advantage of hosting African Citation Index on WOK
To increase visibility of African research output
• Web of Knowledge(WoK) is the premier global research platform for the
area of Sciences, Social Sciences, and Arts & Humanities with over 7000
customer worldwide.
• Showcasing the African Citation Index in WoK platform will extend the
visibility of African Citation Index to international research communities.
To improve quality of African research
• Associating African Citation Index with WoK, African researchers who want
their papers to be shown in African Citation Index have to ensure they
meet minimum standards defined by the local partners.
• This can motivate African researchers to enhance their research output
quality and such process can help to upgrade overall African research
quality in the future.

Advantage of hosting African Citation Index on WOK cont.
Use the African Citation Index to gain insight into
research in the region:
• The Global impact of African research
• Collaborations between Africa and the rest of the world
• Research focus, trends and hot topics in Africa
Extended coverage from the fastest growing and
increasingly important research region
• Identify leading researchers and institutes
• Find out who is being cited in Africa
• Find out which journals are being published and used in
African research
