Global Youth Service Day The Largest Volunteer Service Day in the World!

Project REcycle Volunteer Positions Available

Volunteers will inspect, repair, clean and inventory donated bikes. Project REcycle rescues used bikes, refur-bishes them, and provides them, with helmets, to Camden County youth in need. Thanks to some amazing volun-teers, some great community partners, and generous donors, Project REcycle collected over 100 new and used bikes, refur-bished them, and donated them to needy kids in Camden. In ad-dition, we distributed new bike helmets, taught bike safety classes, served lunch and brought a LOT of smiles to faces of grateful kids. Project REcycle (the Volunteer Center’s flagship project for Global Youth Service Day) was conceived as a way to engage Camden youth in a healthy activ-ity, by introducing them to the joys of cycling. There is an urgent need for positive, recreational programs for the city’s youth. And this is what we delivered. The Volunteer Center’s newest program, HandiCapable, will launch with an in-service at Rut-gers University - Camden Cam-pus. The in-service, aimed at the non-profit sector, will feature a discussion panel comprised of individuals with various disabili-ties who are actively volunteering in the community. The panelists will share their stories about why and how having access to volun-teer opportunities enriched their lives and helped the community.

HandiCapable’s sole intent is to create a method of better en-gagement for volunteers of ALL abilities. As many as 70 percent of all Americans with disabilities

who can and wish to work are unemployed. If these individuals can work, they can volunteer, if they choose.

For various reasons, some volun-teer programs tend to reject po-tential volunteers with disabilities. Finding the door to volunteer ser-vice locked means people with disabilities have less access to serving their communities, and less access to the rewards of vol-unteering their time, talent and effort, to others. The ability to give (rather than receive) offers the sense of doing something for someone else rather than being on the receiving end of charity.

Organizations lose the enthusi-asm, hard work and problem solving skills of volunteers with disabilities. They miss the gifts each of these volunteers could have given them, their clients and their communities. Society also misses a chance to be fully inte-grated.

For disabled individuals, volun-teering has many benefits, such as boosting self-esteem, confi-dence, and creating a feeling of being a worthwhile member of the community. Often, the volun-teer with disabilities teaches other workers and volunteers how to deal with disabled clients and customers more effectively.

It is imperative to view individuals with disabilities as valuable, skilled resources rather than peo-ple who are only on the receiving end of community service. By recruiting volunteers with disabili-ties, organizations will benefit from the volunteer’s unique in-sights and understanding. Indi-viduals with disabilities have been overcoming obstacles their entire lives….what better volun-teer is there?

NJ Aid for Animals (NJAFA) is an all volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit whose mission is to en-sure the safety and well-being of domestic animals through unique, cutting-edge programs and a focus on serving impov-erished communities. 100% of

donations go directly to programs for the animals. Our unique ability for ca-pacity building - bringing together non-profits, local government agencies and community resources - enables NJAFA to maximize our donations and en-sures that funding is allocated to the services which are desperately needed.

NJAFA advocates, educates and provides spay and neuter services for dogs and cats in Camden, NJ whose owners cannot afford the cost and/or transpor-tation in an effort to reduce pet over-population. Our Pet Enrichment Program (PEP) Clinics include shots, flea treatments, grooming, doghouses, medical assistance, food assistance, collars and education where we bring services to the people who cannot otherwise get to them because of transportation. NJAFA also pursues justice and rescues abused animals. We have success-fully brought to justice animal abusers involved in dog fighting and neglect.

New Initiatives: Project Knockout: Celebrity spokesperson Bernard Hopkins is lending his name to billboards to encourage neutering pit bulls. Camden Ani-mal Wellness Clinic: NJAFA is in the process of opening a “wellness” clinic - the first of its kind, for preventive pet care in Camden, and Sanctuary for Pit Bulls: We ensure that abused animals receive the care they need and have partnered with a pit bull sanctuary in Texas.

Walk to Cure Diabetes

More than 5,000 walkers represent-ing local businesses, families, schools, and other organizations will be participating in the (JDRF) three-

mile Walk to Cure Diabetes, on Sunday, October 23rd at the Waterfront at Campbell’s Field with registration at 8:00 am – start time 9:30 am. Come and walk along the scenic Waterfront, beginning at the Riversharks Stadium, all the way to the Battleship NJ and back. And if you prefer a more intimate walk site, feel free to participate at the Walk to Cure Diabetes on Sunday, October 2nd at Parvin State Park in Pittsgrove, NJ. The JDRF Walk is fun and features plenty of entertainment, food, and activi-ties. Our goal? To raise more than $1 million for research to find a cure for mil-lions of children and adults with type 1 diabetes and its complications. The Volunteer Center of Camden County is very pleased to announce the launch of it’s newest pro-gram...Community Involved Veter-ans in Camden County (CIVIC). CIVIC’s overall mission is to bring veterans “back into the fold” by suc-cessfully integrating them back into civilian life through volunteer service. It will be an opportunity for our Veter-ans to share their skills and service with the community, themselves and other veterans. CIVIC will also be a way for our Veterans to develop and enhance new and existing skill sets so they can translate their military skills into civilian job skills.

CIVIC’s goals will be to reconnect Veterans with other Veterans, foster growth of existing Veteran organiza-tions, and provide networking oppor-tunities for Veterans

The services offered by CIVIC to our Veterans will potentially include a Veteran Volunteer Day of Service, Resume Building Workshops, a Vol-unteer Referral Service, and possible job references from local non-profits where the Veterans are volunteering.

CIVIC volunteer opportunities may include (but are not limited to) re-searching Vietnam Dog Tags for re-turn to family members, younger Vet-erans assisting older Veterans, tutor-ing and mentoring Camden County youth, housing rehabilitation, and delivery of meals to shut-ins for the Thanksgiving FEASTival. Kids get arthritis, too! It is a sur-prising fact to many people that children are affected by arthritis. Juvenile arthritis (JA) is an um-brella term used to describe the many autoimmune and inflamma-tory conditions that can develop in children ages 16 and younger. Arthritis typically affects joints. The word “arthritis” literally means joint inflammation: arth (joint) and itis (inflammation) – but JA can involve the eyes, skin and gastrointestinal tract as well. There are several types of juve-nile arthritis. Over time, a child with JA may exhibit a variety of symptoms including muscle and soft tissue tightening, bone ero-sion, joint misalignment, and changes in growth patterns.

The first six months after the on-set of JA are extremely important. A child’s doctor, likely a pediatric rheumatologist, will monitor the number of joints affected during those first six months, as well as administer the rheumatoid factor blood test, which checks for a substance in the blood that’s usu-ally found in people with this con-dition. There is much that can be done for kids affected by JA. Medica-tions can be targeted to help slow or stop disease progression. Ex-ercise can keep muscles strong and joints flexible. Education about diet and mental well-being can help to manage the disease as well. The Arthritis Foundation offers many resources to educate fami-lies about JA. They include JA summer camps, family educa-tional days, parent networking sessions, and educational materi-

als. Community events like the Arthritis Walk and Jingle Bell Run/Walk raise crucial aware-ness and support for JA and all the forms of arthritis, and are great ways to bring families to-gether. The 2011 Jingle Bell Run/Walk is taking place on Saturday, December 10, 2011 at Cooper River Park in Pennsauken, NJ. Please consider forming a team of friends, family, and co-workers! TD Bank employees volunteered for a Day of Service at Collingswood Manor, a non-profit long term care nursing community lo-cated in Collingswood NJ. The TD Bank

employees assisted with various painting projects including the business office, the men's locker room and the nurses station. The group also pol-ished a brass salad bar in the main dining room and helped with many gardening projects, including building a raised vegetable garden for the residents to enjoy throughout the summer and power washing some parts of the property.
