CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Introduction
Global warming is a well-known environmental problem in the world
today. Global warming is the gradual increase in planet-wide temperatures
which is now well documented and accepted by scientists as fact. Global
warming has to do with a change of climate which is directly or indirectly
attributed to human activities that changes the global atmosphere over the
natural climate fluctuation. Scientists believe that Earth is currently facing a
period of rapid warming brought on by rising level of heat-trapping gases,
known as greenhouse gases, in the atmosphere.
The greenhouse gases are here, Charles David Keeling said,
referring to global warming effects of the CO2 increase he has so
accurately measured. When I began analyzing in 1958, the CO2 level in
the atmosphere was 315 parts per million, now it is 355 parts per million.1
The increase in these gases is thought to be caused by
industrialization, especially by the use of fossil fuels such as coal and oil.
These gases act much like the glass in the greenhouse: They let sunlight
in and keep the heat from escaping. As these gases increase in the
atmosphere, concern has grown that temperatures will increase around the

globe, just as in the inside of a greenhouse. Global warming will have wide
spread impacts on health, economics, politics, and the environment.
Carbon dioxide from fossil fuel burning and land clearing has been
accumulating in the atmosphere, where it acts like a blanket keeping the
Earth warm and heating up the surface, ocean and the atmosphere.
There are still other reasons why global warming increases like orbit
fluctuations, increasing insulation and a decrease in global dimming.
The United States alone accounts for 23% of all carbon dioxide
emissions caused by human activity. Methane has increased 151% due to
agriculture and the use of fossil fuels. The use of aerosol propellants and
refrigerants has caused an increase in the amount of CFCs in the
atmosphere as well. Ozone holes, which are thin spots in the layer that
protect the earth from radiation, are also attributed to increases in CFCs.
Nitrous oxides in the atmosphere have increased 17% since the Industrial
Revolution and are also a major cause of acid rain.
Deforestation also releases carbon dioxide via burning of plant life,
and exposing the soil to sunlight. Also, since trees are a major factor in the
natural processing of carbon dioxide, needing it to make up their mass,
when trees are cut down they can no longer serve to absorb carbon
dioxide.

The accelerating destruction of the rainforest that form a precious
cooling band around the Earths equator is now being recognized as one of
the main causes of global warming. The rampant slashing and burning of
tropical forest is second only to the energy sector as a source of
greenhouse gases according to report published today by the Oxford-
based Global Canopy Programme, an alliance of leading rainforest
scientists. Deforestation is responsible for 25% of all carbon emissions
entering the atmosphere, by the burning and cutting of about 34 million
acres a year.
Humans have also been identified in many other aspects of global
warming including changes in the heat content, precipitation, atmospheric
moisture, plant and animal health location, and the Arctic sea ice.
Global warming has also occurred in the distant past as the result of
natural influences. Around 55 million year ago, the Earth experienced a
rapid warming period that lasted for almost 200,000 years. This warming,
known as the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) has been
proposed as an analogue of what is occurring today. During this period
there was mass extinction of species, as well as others spreading about
the globe.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE, SYNTHESIS AND HYPOTHESIS
This chapter deals with the review of research literature and studies
relevant to the present study. Write-ups with bearings on the topic under
study were viewed because of their importance. They served as foundation
of the investigation conducted by the researchers.
Conceptual Literature
Wikipedia defines global warming as the the increase in average
temperature of the Earths near-surface air and oceans. As the word
global and warming implies, the meaning could easily be identified. It is
the gradual warming of the Earth.
The reason humans exist on this planet is because the Earth
naturally traps just enough heat in the atmosphere to keep the temperature
within a very narrow range this creates the conditions that give them
breathable air, clean water, and the weather they depend on to survive.
Human beings have begun to tip that balance. They have overloaded the
atmosphere with heat-trapping gases from their cars and factories and
power plants. Recently, alarming events that are consistent with scientific

predictions about the effects of global warming have become more and
more commonplace.2
Carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas traps long wave radiation emitted
from the Earths surface that warms the atmosphere. Warming will not be
uniform over the Earth. Increased variability in climate is predicted
including changes in precipitation and the frequency of storms. Changing
climate will affect the ecosystem process such as decomposition and
nutrient cycling.3
Political and public debate continues regarding global warming, and
what actions to take in response. The available options are mitigation to
reduce further emissions; adaptation to reduce the damage caused by
warming; and, more speculatively, re-engineering to reverse global
warming. Most national governments have signed and ratified the Kyoto
Protocol aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.4
In 2006, Al gore made a documentary film. This documentary is
entitled An Inconvenient Truth. It focuses on Al Gore and his travels in
support of his efforts to educate the public about the severity of the climate
crisis. Throughout the film, he discusses the scientific opinion on global
warming as well as the present and future effects of global warming.

Research Literature
The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
has been studying global warming for years. Their most recent report,
issued in February 2007, U.N. report confirms human activity to blame for
Earth's warming climate and Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
concludes that "The global increases in carbon dioxide concentration are
due primarily to fossil fuel use and land-use change, while those of
methane and nitrous oxide are primarily due to agriculture." The report
goes on to note that these findings come with a "very high confidence rate
that the globally averaged net effect of human activities since 1750 has
been one of warming."5
An international research team led by the UK Met Office spent 2009
analyzing more than 100 recent scientific papers to update the last IPCC
assessment, released in 2007. Its launch in London marks a resumption of
the campaign by mainstream scientists to show that man-made releases of
greenhouse gases are causing potentially dangerous global warming.6
"The fingerprint of human influence has been detected in many
different aspects of observed climate changes," said Peter Stott, head of
climate monitoring at the Met Office Hadley Centre for Climate Research.

"Natural variability, from the sun, volcanic eruptions or natural cycles,
cannot explain recent warming."7
There is also new evidence of warming in the oceans, which is
having several effects. The subtropical Atlantic is becoming significantly
saltier; the extra salinity could in turn alter ocean currents. Another effect of
ocean warming is increasing evaporation, leading to more humidity in the
atmosphere and changing rainfall patterns.8
"The whole water cycle is changing," said Mr. Stott. "The wet regions
are tending to get wetter and the dry regions are getting dryer." On a global
scale this means less rainfall in the tropics and more at higher latitudes,
although Mr. Stott said there was much regional variation in the pattern,
which scientists were still working to make sense of.9
The review is based on a forensic comparison of the pattern of
changes expected from man-made warming with those that would result
from other factors such as changing solar radiation and purely natural
variations.10
A separate study by Russian and US scientists, published in the
journal Science, shows methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, is escaping

from the seafloor of the warming Arctic Ocean more rapidly than previously
suspected.11
Synthesis
Global warming is defined as the increase in the average
temperature of the Earths surface. It is the gradual warming of the Earth.
Based on these definitions, global warming seems to be a problem that our
world is facing. The climate of the Earth has changed dramatically many
times but now, changes are taking place that do not seem to be the result
of natural processes.
The Earth traps enough heat in the atmosphere to keep the
temperature within a very narrow range. It is the reason why humans exist
on this planet. This is the reason why there is breathable air, clean water
and weather where they depend to survive.
Carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas traps long wave radiation emitted
from the Earths surface that warms the atmosphere. Warming will not be
uniform over the Earth. Increased variability in climate is predicted
including changes in precipitation and the frequency of storms. Changing
climate will affect the ecosystem process such as decomposition and
nutrient cycling.

The Earth is currently experiencing a warming trend but there is a
scientific evidence that human activities have little to do with it. It just so
happened that humans are tipping the balance in the ecosystem. Humans
have overloaded the atmosphere with heat-trapping gases from cars and
factories.
Theoretical Framework
An undergraduate research on Global Warming: Its Origin and
Outcome adopted the study framework that global warming is a factor that
greatly affects our environment. This study identified the different causes
of global warming such as increased precipitation at poles, burning of fossil
fuels, increasing amount of greenhouse gases, ozone depletion, air
pollution and deforestation as the independent variables with its possible
effects as the intervening variables. The dependent variables are those
that can be possibly affected by global warming like humans, animals,
plants, ocean and sea shore and coral reefs.

Conceptual Framework
Many observations were done by numerous scientists that says that
global warming is a factor affecting the growing environment.
This chapter provides the readers with clear background of how the
study was undertaken by researchers.
The study that is made by the researchers is based on the gathered
data and some source of information.
The possible and effective solutions were also tackled.
Effects of global warming are the one given emphasis in this
research.
The study begins with the collecting of information about the cause
of global warming going to the gathering of facts that support the collected
information until it arrives in its effects in our environment.

findings.
Hypothesis
When global warming will come to its fullest, many changes on Earth
will occur. Scientists had made many predictions on what might happen
but these are just human thoughts. Most of these predictions are negative,
events that are not so good. The most known prediction is that it will affect

everything that it can. Even the simplest living thing might be affected, and
no doubt, humans. If ever this changes will happen, creatures might come
to extinction and the Earth will be the same when it all begun. Still, no one
can tell the perfects events that might happen.

RESEARCH METHOD AND PROCEDURE
This chapter presents the method used in the conduct of this study.
Also, this includes the rigid analysis of the sources information about the
topic. The instruments used and the data gathering procedure were
undertaken to complete the research.
Research Design
This study utilized library research method to determine the cause
and effects of global warming. The researchers used this method to make
sure that the information gathered is reliable. If the questionnaire method
was used in this study, the information gathered is most likely biased and
acceptable.
With these concepts in mind, the researchers decided that
something significant in the field of research could be well determined by
this design.
Data Gathering Instruments
The researchers used different sources of references in the library
including the use of magazines and newspapers. Having insufficient data,

the researchers made used of the information given by the internet which
contains the most contribution to the study.
Included on the researches on the web are books and some experts
that gave answers to the questions of the researchers topic.
Data Gathering Procedures
The researchers planned on finding different sources of information
on the references in the library, including the use of magazines and
newspapers.
Unfortunately, information gathered was not sufficient to give
answers concerning the questions of the topic of the researchers. The
researchers then decided to browse in the internet and looked for chosen
information which will help them on their study.

CHAPTER IV
PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA
This includes topical presentation of data presented according to the
specific objectives or problems of the study using textual presentation. This
presents the most important features of the findings study, the analysis
and interpretation of data.
1. What are the effects of global warming?
There are many possible effects of global warming. Some effects
are negative while there are still some positive effects.
Positive effects will include a longer growing season in some places
and higher yields of some crops. Some areas may benefit from the
warming such as the plain provinces of Canada. As the climate warms, the
Canadians will be able to grow a greater variety of vegetables due to a
longer growing season.12
Negative effects will include a rising sea level. The projected rise is
twenty inches a century. This will threaten communities in coastal regions.
Floods and droughts will become worse and strike more often.
Temperature increases in the polar regions may speed up the melting of

23
-

24/32
ice caps. Extensive melting over a long period would dramatically increase
the sea level.13
Destruction of the ozone layer that shields the Earth from the suns
ultraviolet rays may increase the risk of skin cancer. 14
It can also affect biodiversity. The possible effects are extinction of
some plants and animal species, loss of wildlife habitat and disruption of
aquatic life. It can also affect the agricultural sector. The possible effects
are changes in crop yields, increase in irrigation demand, pest, crop
diseases, and weeds in warmer area15
2. How can it affect peoples lives?
The environment is not the only that is affected by global warming;
humans are also affected by both the positive and negative effects of it.
Increased frequency and severity of heat waves will lead to more
heat stroke and other heat-related illness and death. Senior citizens and
children are particularly vulnerable to these effects.
Other effects are increased deaths from diseases, more
environmental refugees and increased migration.16
Global warming can also cause famine.

3. How does global warming develop as technology advances?
Technology can and already has affected global warming. Everyone
knows that much of the warming is human-caused. Technology from the
industrial revolution to present has operated primarily through the use of
combusting hydrocarbons. The combustion process releases CO2 and
other gases. CO2 tends to trap heat re-radiated off the surface of the
Earth, preventing heat from escaping to space and causing the world to
warm which skeptics disagree.17
Throughout the last century the world, reshaped by dams, irrigation,
logging and so forth, has seen drastic human population growth. Resulting
technologies produced an industrial age that transformed the land, sky,
waters, and distribution of the biota of the worlds' nations. The engines and
power plants, which evolved from this historical transformation of science
and technology, threaten our stability.
4. What are the possible and effective solutions to prevent global
warming?

To prevent global warming, carbon dioxide emissions must be
reduced. Energy must be used more efficiently. The reduction of carbon
dioxide emissions can be done by reducing the burning of fossil fuels.
Other energy sources like water power, wind power, solar power and fuel
created from plants can be used.18
The first and most difficult step is to shift the power consumption of
all forms away from combusting hydrocarbons. Wind and solar power are
nice, but quite frankly, they don't offer the kind of scale needed to power
the world in an efficient manner. The only real option currently available is
nuclear fission power. Many people are afraid of nuclear fission, but that's
because they don't understand it. In fact, nuclear fission has an
impeccable safety record when considering that the U.S. Navy has been
using it for 50 years without incident, and aside from a slight leak of
coolant at 3 mile, the U.S. nuclear industry has been squeaky clean. If they
can harvest sustainable nuclear fusion power, then the whole of humanity
could wean themselves off fossil fuels for good. The next step would be to
use the near limitless power of fusion to actively draw down CO 2 levels
from the atmosphere back to levels pre-industrial revolution. Current levels
are about 150% of pre-industrial revolution levels. And they won't entirely
shrink back down naturally for about a hundred thousand years

CHAPTER V
SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
This chapter presents the overview of the entire study. It contains
the summary, the findings of the research and conclusions. It also includes
the recommendation of the researchers.
Summary
This covers the main points of the study. It includes the brief
statement of the problems, the importance of the study, the research
design and the significant findings using textual presentation.
The study aims to determine certain researches pertaining to the
causes and effects of global warming. It conducts researches to gain
evidences or proof to a major issue of our environment which is global
warming.
The main focus of the researchers is to give an overview about
global warming; how can it affect us and the possible solutions. It also
gives an idea to all other researchers who conducts the same study and to
those who wants to know more about the said topic.
In order to answer the related problems concerning the topic, the
descriptive design was used. The design was used because it includes
getting some of those studies that would support to present facts

concerning the nature and status of anything or any kind of phenomena
one may wish to study.
Specifically, this study seeks to answer the following questions:
1. What are the effects of global warming?
2. How can it affect peoples lives?
3. How does global warming develop as technology advances?
4. What are the possible and effective solutions to prevent global
warming?
Findings
The following are significant findings revealed about the study:
1. There are many possible effects of global warming. Some effects
are negative while there are still some positive effects.
Here are some negative effects are:
a. Rising sea level which the projected rise is 20 inches a
century
b. Floods and droughts will become worse and strike more often
c. Temperature increase in polar regions resulting to the melting
of ice caps
d. Greater risk from skin cancer
e. Extinction of some plants and animal species
f. Loss of wildlife habitat

g. Disruption of aquatic life
h. Increase in irrigation demand, pest, crop diseases, and weeds
Here are some positive effects:
a. Longer growing season and higher yield of crops in some
places.
2. Based on scientific research, the human population would also be
affected. Here are some predicted effects of global warming on
humans:
a. Increased deaths from heat and diseases
b. More environmental refugees
c. Increased migration
d. Might cause famine
3. The world, reshaped by dams, irrigation, logging and so forth, has
seen drastic human population growth. Resulting technologies
produced an industrial age that transformed the land, sky, waters,
and distribution of the biota of the worlds' nations. The engines and
power plants, which evolved from this historical transformation of
science and technology, threaten our stability.

4. To prevent global warming, carbon dioxide emissions must be
reduced. Here are some ways to prevent the worsening effect of
global warming:
a. Carbon dioxide emissions must be reduced
b. Use energy more efficiently
c. Reduce the burning of fossil fuels.
d. Use energy sources like water power, wind power, solar
power and fuel created from plants
Conclusion
In the light of the study, the following conclusions are drawn.
1. Not all effects of global warming are negative; there are also some
positive effects of it.
2. The human population will also be greatly affected by this
phenomenon.
3. Technology also contributes to the worsening status of global
warming.
4. There are many ways to prevent global warming. This prevention
must be done as soon as possible.

Recommendation
The research gave knowledge about global warming. This
knowledge must be used to help prevent global warming. A good life is
what everyone wants that is why the researchers recommend the
following:
1. Appliances that are turned off must be unplugged.
2. Energy sources like water power can be used.
3. Burning of fossil fuels must be reduced.
4. Waste must be disposed off properly.
5. All light bulbs must be replaced with energy-efficient fluorescents
that use fewer watts for the same amount of light.
