Newsletter October 2012
Initiated by the Australian Government Overseas Aid Program, the Global Education Project offers professional development for pre-service, primary and secondary teach-ers to assist them in teaching about global issues and perspectives across all learning areas. The goal of the Project is to raise global awareness and understanding amongst
school students and foster the skills, knowledge and values which will enable them to participate in an increas-ingly interdependent global society.
The One World Centre implements the Global Education Project in WA.
Welcome to the final newsletter for 2012. It has been a busy year with just a few months to go.
Up until October 678 teachers have attended global education professional development sessions, some for the second and third time. Geraldton has become a hotbed of global education with school based PD’s, presentations at the combined schools PD and a constant flow of library resources to teachers in the region.
Our work in universities this year has seen 1176 pre-service teachers develop an under-standing of global education through lectures, tutorials and assignments.
184 items have been purchased to add to the collection of global education resources in the library. A Reconciliation kit and discovery boxes about Bolivia and Japan have been added to the collection. We are also very proud of our first publication, All’s Well?, written by OWC education officers.
We hope the rest of the year goes well for you and look forward to another successful year in 2013.
Alison Bullock, OWC Coordinator, on behalf of us all at the OWC.

The OWC hits the road again.
Pre-service Teacher’s Workshop A second day long workshop for 39 pre-service teachers was held in June at City Farm. Participants had
the chance to try out some activities that they could use in their teaching and to plan units of work using global education resources from the OWC library. A delicious lunch of soup prepared by OWC volunteers
has become one of the features of this workshop—we hope this is not the only reason that students come!

Here are some ideas for continuing to learn about poverty.
Teaching activities Confronting Hunger - 'The Strike' Students are introduced to the scope and some of the challenges of
addressing global hunger, through viewing a film clip about a young Australian who attempts to solve the problem using his heroic alter-ego 'The Strike'. When he visits a community in Timor Leste he learns that addressing the issue of hunger is harder than he first imagined. Students then use the worksheet to identify the strategies used to persuade the viewer to take action. http://www.worldvision.com.au/Learn/SchoolResources/Content.aspx?id=783b213c-62f8-44f0-ae25-feb26403e10c
Race to the Bottom is fun way to see the effects of international corporations and trade on developing
countries competing to have a foreign company invest. http://www.planusa.org/contentmgr/

TEACHunicef has a collection of teacher resources that address poverty. The units highlight the story of a teenager named Himal from Nepal who shares his story of working to overcome challenging circumstances. The additional lesson plans, videos, multimedia and stories in this collection illustrate the issues and challenges of addressing poverty. http://teachunicef.org/explore/topic/poverty
ANTI-POVERTY WEEK (14-20 October) was recently observed by the international community.
The No -Nonsense Guide to World Poverty by Jeremy Seabrook This guide first attempts to define and measure poverty. It then discusses how impoverishment occurs and the relationship between wealth and poverty.
World Poverty for Dummies by Sarah Marland et al This is a great resource for teachers and students
hoping for an overview of what can seem a huge and overwhelming topic. Its style is such that it manages
to condense a huge amount of statistical data and information into a logical and
accessible format.
Words into Action: Basic rights and the campaign against poverty by Oxfam. This book looks at some of the main obstacles which prevent poor people claiming their rights. It tells of the hard-won successes of people who are working for a better life for themselves, their families and their communities. With case studies, infor-mation about global institutions and statistics, explains why poverty persists and what can be done to overcome it.
Beatrice’s Dream : a Story of Kibera Slum by Wendy Stone Beatrice is a thirteen-year-old orphan in Kibera, Nairobi- a Kenyan shantytown build on refuse and rubbish and one
of the biggest slums in Africa. In this book she describes her life: her walk to school, the dust that blows between her teeth and the mud she wades through, her teacher’s down-to-earth encouragement, her fear of being alone and how safe she feels at school.
Slumming it by Kevin McCloud & Helen Simpson Kevin McCloud takes us through one of the most densely populated places on earth - Dharavi, Mumbai. Made famous by the film Slumdog Millionaire, Dharavi is India's largest slum. However, in spite of the hardships of life lived with contaminated water, basic sanitation, and overcrowding - we discover an amazing sense of community among those who live there.
