Sulphuric acid is also called oil of vitriol and is a dense, colorless, oily and corrosive mineral acid, which is one of

the most-used chemical for various industrial purposes across the globe. Sulphuric acid is produced by two

major processes, lead chamber and contact process. Both of these processes include oxidization of sulphur di-

oxide and its dissolution in water. Lead chamber process is a conventional method to produce sulphuric acid

which is majorly used in manufacturing of fertilizers, while contact process produces more concentrated

sulphuric acid and requires purest for of available raw materials.

Sulphuric acid is majorly utilized for production of phosphate fertilizers, especially wet-process phosphoric acid.

However, sulphuric acid consumption in chemical synthesis, metal processing and other industrial applications is

gaining popularity. Other important applications are in petroleum refining, steel pickling, rayon & staple fiber,

alum, explosives, detergents, plastics and fibers etc.

Sulphuric acid is produced in 4 main steps:

a) Extraction of elemental sulphur

b) Conversion of elemental sulphur to sulphur di-oxide (SO2)

c) Conversion of sulphur di-oxide to sulphur tr-ioxide (SO3)

d) Conversion of sulphur tr-ioxide to sulphuric acid.

Three main processes to produce sulphuric acid differ by the raw material that is used to make intermediate

sulphur di-oxide (SO2) gas. After formation of sulphur di-oxide, the manufacturing processes convert it to

sulphuric acid in a similar way. 11

Burning of sulphur is most widely used method for producing sulphuric acid across the world. Elemental sulphur

is recovered from desulphurization of natural gas or crude oil. Around 87% of global sulphur produced is used

for the manufacturing of sulphuric acid.

Many metal ores occur as sulphides and they emit gases, which contain sulphur di-oxide that is released when it

is roasted during metallurgical processes. This SO2 is further processed to produce sulphuric acid. For instance,

in the process of extraction of copper metal, sulphuric acid is recovered as a by-product from off-gases

generated from smelting and converting furnaces.

Pyrite roasting is another method for producing sulphuric acid, wherein pyrite ores are roasted in fluidized beds.

The gases released from the roasters contain high content of sulphur di-oxide, which is converted to sulphuric

acid.
