The family knew English well,so we talked about everything — from the importance of religion in their daily lives to

my own mother’s love of sewing. Upon mentioningsewing, the family organized an excursion to the local fabric market. I donned traditional clothing andjoined the family in bartering and shopping for localgoods. I never met such kind, generous people — they really made me feel like a partof their family. Above all else, these types of experiences — engaging with locals intheir natural surroundings — are what made my time abroad so incredible.”

time I got into a cab and directed the driver home in his language was awesome!Being in situations I didn’t necessarily feel comfortable in was exactly what Iwanted from study abroad and exactly what NYU in Shanghai gave me. I plan todo business in Shanghai one day, and by understanding the culture and knowing a basic level of the language, I will be well prepared and confident. There is noquestion that spending a semester in Shanghai was one of the best decisions of my life (so far).”
