Cost effective Approach to Smallsat ProjectsA Satellite Manufacturers View on the Challenges of the Future
1
2About UsYoung, Multicultural, Enthusiastic
German Orbital Systems (GOS) was founded in 2014 by two former scientific staff members of the TechnischeUniversität Berlin. Starting from scratch, the company developed multiple satellite subsystems and successfully entered the market in 2015. Inspired by new space companies from all over the world, GOS established a multicultural team of young, motivated experts. By the end of 2016 our portfolio included a variety of products, ranging from small satellite on-board computers to satellite deployment mechanisms. Our goal is to become a noteworthy player on the global market by 2020.
Spearheading New Space in Germany since 2014
Some Specifics of a Smallsat ProjectBuild fast, build reliable, build cheap – at the same time
3
DurationTypical Time from
Kick-Off to Delivery < 2 Years
Tech-TransferCustomers often
request full technology transfer
IndividualityOften individual third-
party payloads are part of the deal
ReliabilityCustomers expect an active orbital lifetime
of at least 2 years
PricePrices vary from 100K for a simple barebone
Cubesat to 5M for a state of the art 100 kg

Main Cost DriversExample for a 6U Remote Sensing CubeSat Mission
5
Engineering Labor Costs (from scratch)A typical CubeSat project requires 10-12 full-time Engineers for at least 2 years. Assuming yearly costs of 60K per person, this results in an overall amount of 1.5 M
MAIT CostsManufacturing costs (incl. buying third party components) for a 6U CubeSat lie below 200K for FM and EQM together, Testing can be performed for <50 K. Overall MAIT costs for such a project < 300 K.
Launch CostsFor a 6U CubeSat, a typical price (incl. the separation system) is 500K.

This approach allows us to provide 90 different, fully functional bare-bone CubeSats at the moment, which can be used for most of the applications, reducing the engineering effort. This allows for competitive pricings. We follow the same modular approach in our software development. By 2019 we will have more then 240 standard configurations.

The Roadmap 12
Subsystems Development, Ongoing Updates
The baseline subsystems
have been developed
already. New ones will be
introduced in future to
expand the range of
possible applications. The
main vector of the next year
will be an active AOCS
system.
Introduction of our 1U to 6U
platforms for Technology
Demonstration,, Remote
Sensing and
Communication
Applications. Over 90
configurations possible at
the moment.
Introduction of our high end
CubeSat platforms for
sophisticated remote
sensing purposes. The top end of our product
portfolio will be integrated
in our building blocks
concept in 2019. With over
240 combination
possibilities we will cover
most of the possible
SmallSat applications then.
