PRIVATEACCOMMODATIONIN CARDIFFThere is plenty ofaccommodation in Cardiffthat is let out by privatelandlords to students.Such accommodationconsists of shared housesand flats. Occasionally youmay find a room in ahouse that you wouldshare with thelandlord/lady.

LOOKING FOR PRIVATEACCOMMODATION FROMYOUR HOME COUNTRY We would not advise arranging long-termrented accommodation from overseas. Itis best come to Cardiff before the start ofyour course and reserve a room in ahotel, hostel or bed & breakfast whileyou look for suitable privateaccommodation. HOST FAMILYORGANISATIONS If you choose a host family, you will livewith a couple or a family sharing facilitiessuch as a living room, bathroom andkitchen. Your host would provide a familyenvironment and an opportunity for youto learn the language and experience adifferent culture. LIVING IN CARDIFF

When moving to a new city it can bedifficult to adjust to the new way of lifeand adapt to a new culture. You arelikely to experience a whole range ofemotions. Some of these feelings will besurprising, confusing, frustrating and canmake you feel anxious. This is known as“culture shock” and almost everyonewho studies, lives and works abroad willexperience this to some degree.Differences in climate, food, dress,behaviour and language can allcontribute to feelings of loneliness,

disorientation, irritability, increasedvulnerability and reduced confidence.Culture shock can affect anyone and isa very normal reaction for incomingstudents as they adjust to a newenvironment. The best way to deal withculture shock is to try and understandthe different situation you are in andhow it makes you feel. In this way, youcan work out how best to respond to thedifference and so reduce your anxiety.Focusing on things you like in the newculture rather than the things you do not

like will help keep your spirits high andenable you to be more tolerant of yourenvironment.

These feelings will pass and you willsettle into student life. However, if youdo feel that you are unable to cope, askfor help from the Counselling Servicewith the Student Support Centre orStudent Advice within the Students'Union (see page 37). They willunderstand the problems you may behaving and will listen sympathetically.

DO I NEED MEDICALINSURANCE?

EEA / Swiss NationalsNon-UK European Economic Area (EEA)and Swiss nationals should obtain aEuropean Health Insurance Card (EHIC)before coming to the UK to access freeNational Health Service (NHS)treatment. The EHIC will cover you fortreatment that becomes necessaryduring your stay in the UK, until youreturn to your home country. Bear inmind that the healthcare system in theUK may be different from that in yourhome country and as such, may notcover everything you would expect to getfree back in your home country.

Non EEA / Swiss Nationals

Courses of more than sixmonthsIf your course at Cardiff University is forsix months or more and you are not anEEA / Swiss national, then it is likely thatyou will be required to pay animmigration health surcharge as part ofyour visa application fee. 46WHAT IS THE NATIONAL HEALTH SERVICE (NHS) // www.cardiff.ac.uk/new-students

Even if you are entitled to free NHStreatment whilst in the UK, you shouldconsider taking out insurance, whichcovers other medical-related costs. Aninsurance policy may cover, for example:

 costs of returning home if a relative isill;

 costs of a relative visiting you in theUK if you fall ill;

 cost of returning to your homecountry for treatment;

There is often a long wait for NHStreatment, sometimes many months. Aninsurance policy which gives you accessto private medical care could give youmuch quicker access to the treatmentyou need.

If you already have medical insurance inyour home country, check whether youcan extend it to cover your stay in theUK, as well as looking at optionsavailable from UK insurers. Endsleigh, an insurance service, offers studentinsurance product.
