Prepare Your People with Proof of Payment

Risk Scenario• Your travelers or expatriates are not traveling with sufficient proof of coverage or proof of payment • In many countries, they can be denied care all together until coverage can be verified or payment guaranteed • This process can take hours to days (particularly over holidays) while the patient may require a life-saving

intervention within minutes to hours• This includes air ambulance evacuation – most providers will refuse transportation without clear guarantee

of payment • Delay in necessary care can result in legal or reputational damage for your business

Preparedness TipEnsure that your travelers and expatriates have:

• A membership card that shows insurance or benefits and emergency call center contact information

• Access to individuals authorized to approve emergency coverage 24/7/365 – either the underwriter or

the assistance company should have authority to make these decisions on an emergency basis.

Assess and Plan for Long Term Care

Risk Scenario• Your employee is diagnosed with cancer while on an expatriate assignment

• In many cases, the person may need to begin treatment while abroad

• After chemotherapy, a patient will have to wait until immune system is strong enough to travel back to home

country

• This could result in extended time abroad, and could be more costly than getting treatment in home country

Preparedness Tip • Health prescreening before you go and plans in place for long term care

Don’t Overlook Proper Care for Mental Health Crises

Risk Scenario• A traveler experiencing a mental illness crisis such as a manic episode and requires immediate psychiatric

care

• Some countries do not recognize psychiatric crises as medical conditions and could prosecute detain the

person rather than get them the help they need

Preparedness Tip• Understand local laws before your people go

• Ensure you have protocols in place to get proper mental health care for employees, regardless of what

country they travel to

Be Ready for Shortages of Time Sensitive Vaccines

Risk Scenario• Your business traveler experiences a minor injury from a dog bite, which is very common in Latin America and

other regions

• There is a shortage of rabies immune globulin which must be given as quickly as possible

• No matter how minor, this will likely require costly evacuation to home or neighboring country for necessary

vaccination

Preparedness Tip• Educate travelers and expatriates about how to avoid contact with animal threats

• Protocols and insurance in place for an emergency evacuation

• Ensure travelers have immediate access to a 24/7 resource center for advice on qualified providers and

to arrange necessary transportation
