Is Kwashiorkor a problem for children around the world?

Kwashiorkor (5 W’s)What is it? Deficiency of proteins, carbohydrates and fats, results in

protein-calorie malnutrition (PCM) or protein-energy malnutrition (PEM).

Literal translation, first-second Children lack daily energy and body doesn’t function

properly; become very ill or die Other symptoms include: dermatitis (skin disease), changes

in pigmentation, hair discoloration and thinning are all seen frequently

Full growth will never be achieved May leave children w/ mental and physical disabilities

Where does it take place? Occurs in areas of famine, limited food supply, and low levels

of education which leads to improper knowledge of proper diet (underdeveloped/ third world countries)

Also in areas where dietary amino acid content is low

When was it discovered? 1935 by Cicley D. Williams

Who does it affect? mainly young children

Why does it happen? Lack of essential vitamins and proteins

Nutritionist’s Position on the Problem/ Issue

To educate people in these countries about their dietary problems and to inform people to help those countries

Prescribe doses of carbs, fats, and proteins Restoration of fluid and electrolytes; oral feeding and

food being introduced slowly Carbs provided first, then high quality protein foods, and

protein-calorie supplements Antibiotics for infections
