Not only was May's decline the sharpest deceleration in more than two years, the index has fallen from an all-time high to scarcely above 50 in just five months.
The critical level of 50 divides a manufacturing expansion from a manufacturing contraction, and the last time the index crossed below 50 was June 2008, three months before the financial crisis hit full force.
