Course Description
eginning 0ith the rise of comple societies this course considers the deelopment of earl*0orld cultures in regions including the 2ertile Crescent the 3ndus ier alle* China and
5frica. Particular attention is gien to geographic influence origin stories religious eliefs and
political structures. Continuing through the rise of -reece and ome this course concludes *eamining the rise of Europe and the eginnings of coloni6ation.
!his course 0ill pa* particular attention to the deelopment of 0estern societ* and its
relationship 0ith the rest of the 0orld. !racing Christianit* from its emergence 0ithin the omanEmpire through doctrinal deelopments during the medieal period proides clear eidence of
ho0 the idea of Christendom united Europe through religion. 3n contrast eploration of the
theological and militar* rise of 3slam demonstrates the challenges Europeans faced in formeroman territories and highlights the intellectual achieements of 3slamic scholars. * loo,ing at
0estern societ* 0ithin the larger contet of 0orld histor* this course 0ill proide a fuller
understanding of the cultural eliefs political eents and conflicts that hae shaped therelationship et0een 0esterners and non0esterners.
