Globalisation: is a phenomenon taking place all across the globe as people of different nations communicate and interact more efficiently through technology.

Some definitions:

Global education: International issues and diverse cultures are increasingly being introduced in the classroom, becoming global citizens, learning 21st century skills etc…

Interculturality :

is the interaction of people from different cultural backgrounds using authentic language appropriately in a way that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the cultures. It is the ability to experience the culture of another person and to be open minded, interested, and curious about that person and culture.

Various scholars perceive this as incorporating:

•multiple perspectives •comprehension and appreciation of cultures•knowledge of global issues •the world as interrelated systems.

The face of education today has changed dramatically. Students are facing a global society which is interconnected.  Thus the importance of global education in curricula.

 

Elements which make up global education and 21st

century skills:

Flexibility to adapt to changing technologies Encourages critical thinking Problem-solving Global awareness, justice Social responsibility Human rights Peace Open mindedness Resistance to stereo typing Cross-cultural communication Collaboration Digital skills Preparing the future citizen

These are all essentially integrated in eTwinning

projects.

Intercultural interactions promote these elements and in effect eTwinning contributes towards the enhancement and development of global education.

But the most important element – the key factor - for all this to be a success is:

The TEACHER

Teachers have a very important role in global education they are agents of change facilitating and inspiring this enhancement and transformation. Teachers do not just teach but inspire and arouse curiosity. Curiosity then brings about learning in a natural way: it is the engine of achievement.

• Lack of support in schools.

• No teacher preparation for in student teacher programmes,for global education, interculturality.

• Lack of technical support/ training in use of digital tools.

The Partnership for 21st Century Skills (P21) was founded in 2002 as a coalition bringing together the business community, education leaders, and policymakers to position 21st century readiness at the center of US K-12 education and to kick-start a national conversation on the importance of 21st century skills for all students.

The heart of global education is enabling young people to participate in shaping a better, shared future for the world.

It emphasises the unity and interdependence of human society, developing a sense of self and appreciation of cultural diversity, affirmation of social justice and human rights.

It promotes positive values and assists students to take responsibility for their actions and to see themselves as global citizens who can contribute to a more peaceful world.

eTwinning plays a major role in all this as it the tool which equips young people with technological skills and above all awareness of a multicultural society : within a context with which students can identify and make sense.

Competencies which resonate with twenty-first century skills are stepping-stones to a successful future in a global society*.
