Belonging in today’s worldPeople always need to belong in

order for them to feel a sense of identity, security, and purpose.

Alongside our affiliation, (whether with family, group, friends, institutions, etc.) we have to follow rules that exist within each group.

What rules am I expected to obey? There are two types of rules: 1. Informal rules2. Formal rules

As a group, we hope people will obey the informal rules of society but we expect that people will comply with the formal rules of society.

Informal RulesRules which are usually unwritten

but govern the way a society or group within that society operates are usually referred to as informal rules or social norms.

Formal RulesFormal rules, are usually, though

not always, written. If they are broken, we can expect some sort of action, usually punishments, will follow.

Rules, rights and laws in today’s complex societyEach person has many statuses,

therefore many roles connected to those status also exist.

For each role that a person has, it embodies the group you belong to( daughter for family, classmate to school, employee to company, etc.).

For each group there are rules, rights, and laws that govern them. And we need to follow each one of them.

What are laws?Laws are a body of rules that are

binding on the community either because

1. they have been recognized by the community as customary or because:

2. they are enforced by some authority recognized by the community

Social or legal sanctions?Do our “mistakes” in dealing with

people require social or legal sanction (punishment)?

Social sanction – the kind of reprimand we get for violating rules that are not too serious ( laughing in a ceremony, arriving late in a meeting, etc.)

Legal sanction – punishment with the force of the law because they are serious (stealing, killing, arson, etc.)
