GLOBAL WARMING
WHAT IS GLOBAL WARMING ?
increasing concentration of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide in the atmosphere
Carbon dioxide traps the sun rays
This rises the earth’s temperature
Ice at the polar regions melt
Water levels in the water bodies increases
Causing floods
What causes global warming
increase in carbon dioxide
cutting down trees
Increase in use of fossil fuel and domestic fuel
The smoke left by the industries etc
EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING
EFFECTS ON WEATHER AND CLIMATE
RISE IN SEA LEVEL.
EFFECTS ON RANGE OF SPECIES DISTRIBUTION.
crop PRODUCTION.
EFFECTS ON WEATHER AND CLIMATE.
Warming of the troposphere & cooling of the stratosphere .
This would cause wide-spread change in precipitation patterns due to changed in pattern of the air mass movements.
The precipitation will increase at higher latitudes but will decrease at lower latitudes.
The frequency of extreme drought and floods will increase.
Increase in human disease
RISE IN SEA LEVEL Rise of temperature could lead to the melting of
ice sheets that hold back glaciers. This results in rising sea levels.
A rise of even half a meter in sea level would affect human population, one third of which lives within 6okm of a coast.
Thus, rise in sea level will have negative impact on human settlements, tourism, water supply, fisheries, agriculture and coastal ecosystems.
EFFECTS ON RANGE OF SPECIES DISTRIBUTION.
Each plant and animal species occurs within a specific range of temperature
Shift in temperature range affects altitudinal and latitudinal distribution pattern of organisms.
Many species may shift slowly poleward or towards high elevations of mountain areas.
Rapid increase in temperature may cause large scale death of many trees, as they are sensitive to temperature stress
. Many species may disappear, as they are unable to migrate
fast enough to track temperature change.
CROP PRODUCTION. Global warming will reduce crop production due to increased
incidence of plant diseases
explosive growth of weeds and enhanced basal rate of respiration of plants.
In temperate regions, small rise in temperature may enhance the crop productivity slightly
larger temperature change will decrease the crop productivity there.
in tropical and subtropical regions, small rise in temperature. will have detrimental effect on crop productivity.
HOW TO PREVENT GLOBAL WARMING
Plant trees.
Conservation of earth
Reduction in green house gas emission by reducing the use of fossil fuels an
developing alternative renewable sources of energy like solar energy, wind energy etc.
Increase of the vegetation cover, particularly forest for photosynthesis utilization of CO2.
