Organised by the Grace Park Community Carols Inc., which is a committee run by volunteers, the event has been a local favourite since 2011.

This year there will be performances from the Boroondara Brass and Melbourne Chorus, as well as some soloists and local primary school choirs. There will also be a BBQ, an ice cream truck and of course a visit from Santa.

The City of Boroondara is proud to support the event through its community grants.

Come along to Grace Park in Hawthorn on Sunday 9 December at 7pm to enjoy the carols.

Grace Park Carols

We are very lucky in Glenferrie ward to have such an array of businesses, restaurants, activities and parks on our doorstep to share with our relatives and friends.

I am pleased to have received feedback from a number of people who also take pride in their city and want to make the precinct better. I can only say that I share that pride and I will continue to advocate for the entire precinct.

In the last few years our ward has benefited by the addition of the civic space on the corner of Burwood and Glenferrie Roads. There were many wonderful events held in this space last summer and I’m sure there will be many more to come. No doubt our parks will also be well used over the coming months and as you enjoy the warmer weather in these shared spaces I’m sure you will be considerate towards residents who live close to them.

As the festive season fast approaches I wish you all the very best for the year ahead. In the new year, I hope I can meet up with many of you at the various events and functions taking place in our ward over summer, which will culminate in the fantastic Glenferrie Road festival. The festival keeps getting bigger and better each year thanks to the wonderful work of the Glenferrie Traders Association. I would also like to take this opportunity to make mention of the Auburn Village traders who are also growing in strength and I’m hoping I can work with them over the coming months to improve the fantastic character of Auburn Village.

So, to each of you a very happy festive season and all the best for 2019.

Councillor Steve Hurd

Once again we are fast approaching the end of the year. As usual I can’t emphasise enough how important it is for people to shop local and think global as they say.

A message from your Councillor

Local School Crossing Supervisor Anita Ching is passionate about making sure everyone gets to school safely.

During her seven-year role as a Crossing Supervisor, she has enjoyed seeing happy little faces walk through her crossing. She calls on others in the community to consider taking up the opportunity.

“I thoroughly recommend (becoming a School Crossing Supervisor). You are doing something for the community. You are working outdoors. It’s just very rewarding.”

Like Anita, you can play a highly-valued role in keeping our community safe by becoming a school crossing supervisor.

Boroondara is home to 46 schools and 113 school crossings, which means we have a growing need to keep our children and families safe on the road.

Richard Eden from Panache Flowers in Hawthorn was selected as one of the grant recipients by the assessment panel which included Cr Steve Hurd.

For over 25 years, the local Hawthorn florist has supplied traditional and modern arrangements to celebrate milestones and anniversaries.

With an increased demand in his pieces and his own aspirations to offer floral workshops, Richard saw a store extension as a way to better accommodate his customers.

To achieve this, Richard applied for City of Boroondara’s Small Business Sparks Grant, which provided amounts up to $2000 on a dollar-for-dollar basis to support local business initiatives.

After his application was successful, Richard was able to commence his store renovation, making his vision for floral workshops a reality.

Panache Flower’s Clinton Kelleher is excited about their new 2019 floral art classes, which will offer pansy classes, corporate and hen’s party workshops and tropical flower arrangements.

“The grant helped us pull it together… it was a great help!”

This year, the Small Business Sparks Grant program funded five local business initiatives to drive economic growth, celebrate local talent and encourage greater visitation to Boroondara.

They are the perfect place to soak in the summer sunshine, enjoy our beautiful parklands and get some exercise. With three off-leash areas in Glenferrie Ward at Grace Park, Pridmore Park and St James Park in Hawthorn, plus plenty more in surrounding neighbourhoods, you are sure to find one nearby.

If you decide to take your pooch to the park remember you can help everyone to have a good time by following some simple rules as a responsible dog owner:

§ Always carry a leash with you.

§ Keep your dog in eye sight at all times.

§ Ensure your dog responds immediately to your voice commands.

§ Remember, some people can feel threatened by dogs, even if you think yours is friendly, always keep control of your dog around other people and animals.

§ Always carry a plastic bag with you and pick up after your dog.

Boroondara has many great spaces where you can take your dog for a run off the leash.

Play nicely at off-leash reserve
