Glenelg Catholic Parish 23rd January, 2022 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C Sunday of the Word of God John Herd PP Do you have a Family Bible? I remember a beautifully white bound Family Bible in our home as I was growing up. There was space to record various family events like Births, Baptisms, Weddings, Deaths. But I dont recall going to the bible to find inspiration or a helpful word of Gods presence. Years ago we Catholics were not familiar with the Bible as our protestant friends were. But things have certainly changed. I hope you have some special scriptural passages that mean something significant for you, such as, Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, trust also in me(Jn 14:1); Do not fear for I have redeemed you(Isaiah 43:1); I can do all things through him who strengthens me(Philippians 4:13). I hope you have quietly read the Road to Emmaus about the two disciples who are discouraged and while walking away from Jerusalem a stranger mysteriously walks with them, and while talking with them He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures” (Lk 24:45). In Australia we will celebrate Sunday of the Word of God on the first Sunday of February, but the rest of the church will celebrate it this Sunday. It is a new feast begun by Pope Francis with the purpose of drawing our attention to the Word of God, the sacred scriptures. Ever since the Second Vatican Council we Catholics have been encouraged to become familiar with the sacred scriptures at the academic level and also as a source of prayer and inspiration. Many people find it very rewarding to study the scriptures and grow in understanding about the style and purpose of the various books of the bible. The word bible comes from Greek, ta biblia , the books, and means much the same as the Italian word biblioteca, library. It can be wonderful to enter into the study of sacred scripture and the mystery of the inspired Word of God written in words of people. We are meant to draw inspiration and nourishment from the Word of God. At Sunday Mass we begin with the Liturgy of the Word and the readings are proclaimed from the lectern (also called the ambo). The lectern is a revered liturgical object which corresponds to the altar – we speak of the Table of the Word and the Table of the Eucharist. Both are intended as sources of nourishment for us. It is helpful if those who proclaim Gods Word do so clearly, deliberately and with feeling so that we can all receive what is being proclaimed. Appropriate pauses of silence are helpful. In the parish last year we began a session called Gods Word which was held Thursday evenings 7-8pm. It consisted in reading the coming Sunday readings together with a commentary and was intended especially for ministers of the Word. We will begin that again in February but you can also find your own time to do the same at home, and there is a good resource called Break Open the Word. I also want to offer a couple of introductory sessions to the Bible – 7-8.30pm Wednesday 2nd, 9 th February. May we all come to know, love and be nourished by the Word of God.

LITURGY—YEAR C

3RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

This Sunday has been designated by

the Church as the Sunday of the Word

of God. It is a day for us to experience

anew how the risen Lord opens up for

us the treasury of his word and

enables us to proclaim its

unfathomable riches.

1st Reading: Nehemiah 8:2-6.8-10

After their return to their homeland

from exile, the people of Israel are

moved to tears by the public reading

of God’s word.

Psalm: Your words, Lord, are spirit

and life.

2nd Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:12-30

St Paul teaches that we together are

Christ’s body, made up of many

different parts.

Gospel Acclamation:

Alleluia, alleluia! The Lord sent me to

bring Good News to the poor and

freedom to prisoners. Alleluia!

Gospel: Luke 1:1-1-4;4:14-21

The beginning of Luke’s Gospel: Jesus

proclaims God’s word and sets out his

mission statement.

Memorial Acclamation:

When we eat this Bread and drink this

Cup, we proclaim your Death, O

Lord, until you come again.
