For example, in 1789, George Washington made a public proclamation saying that, “it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor.” He recommended and assigned Thursday, the 26th day of November 1789 to be a day of Thanksgiving. Of course most know the story of the pilgrims and how they and the Indians of the area had a Thanksgiving feast in 1621 – long before Washington’s proclamation. Even earlier than 1621 – we find people offering up thanks to God. In the Old Testament, we find a Song of Thanksgiving. It is Psalm 100. It is subtitled “A Psalm of Thanksgiving”. It is an invitation to join together to acknowledge the great things that God has done. Not only does Psalm 100 call us to praise the Lord with thankfulness – but it also describes to us the nature of thanksgiving. In Romans chapter eleven Paul is giving thanks and praise to God when he writes: “Everything comes from him; Everything happens through him; Everything ends up in him. Always glory! Always praise! Yes.” Romans 11:36 Let us pray and be thankful-- Let us give thanks to God for joy and gladness – gratitude – and with a heart that we can depend on Him. Blessings, Pastor Selena

Five Keys to Giving Thanks These are the keys to my thanksgiving as I celebrate what God has given me; a wonderful husband, three children and nine grandchildren. We will remember all of our family members that are already in heaven. I will remember my family here at Glencoe and I wish everyone a joyful Thanksgiving and remember:

GOD LOVES EACH OF YOU AND HE IS STILL ON THE THRONE.

1. JOY,

2. GLADNESS, 3. DEPENDENCE,

4. THANKFULNESS, 5. GRATITUDE

Thanksgiving Day is a day set aside to express our thanks to God. Of course most know the story of the pilgrims and how they and the Indians of the area had a Thanksgiving feast in

1621 – long before Washington’s proclamation.

Even earlier than 1621 – we find people offering up thanks to God. In the Old Testament, we find a Song of Thanksgiving. It is Psalm 100. It is subtitled “A Psalm of Thanksgiving”. Monthly Meals

We are in need of people to provide monthly meals for the church. Meals cannot be provided

without volunteers. Please let Jackie Linville know if you can assist with providing a meal.

Food for Thought

Have you ever been reading a very familiar scripture and found that it seemed new, that it actually

seemed to speak to you as if it were written for you and your particular situation? Did you think

that it was coincidental?

This happened to me recently when I began to study my lesson for class. I usually read through the

lesson just to get the gist and then go back and read more closely in order to teach, making sure to

bring out the most salient parts to share with the class. This particular lesson was from Hebrews

and when I read the lesson writer’s first sentence, I could go no further. He reminded the reader

that our ‘prime vocation is to become the person God intended us to be’. WOW! Talk about a rude

awakening. From that point on I have been so keenly aware of the fact that I am still a work in

progress. It would seem that in 79 years I would have made some headway, but no.

This begs the question of how aware are we of the many ways God speaks to us and are we making

time in our daily lives for a time for listening for His directions for us. I confess to allowing so

many distractions to enter my day such as TV. Do we make time for communing with God? How

often during the day do we have absolute silence? Those are the times when we may hear God

speaking to us. It may just be a still small voice, which may be interpreted as intuition.

Communication is a two-way situation, talking and listening. I’m afraid I do more talking to God

than listening.

It helps to take stock sometimes. We often get complacent. But, our spiritual journey never ends

and we never get too old to learn. In this age of technology, we forget that all our problems cannot

be solved by a handheld device. I’d rather trust God than Siri!

Just something to think about!
