SCHOOL COUNCIL AGM and Meeting this week

Our School Council Annual General Meeting is Wednesday 20th March. At this meeting we will elect our 2019 School Council President and other office-bearers, including Vice-President and Treasurer.

Our recent election process did not require a ballot to determine our School Council members for 2019. I would like to welcome Margaret Dixon to School Council for 2019-2020. Departing School Council is John Montgomery and Cath Sloley. On behalf of our SC members and community I would like to thank both for their contribution, support and focus on school improvement in their time with us. I will formerly announce our School Council members in the next Linkletter after this Wednesday’s first meeting.

PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS

Our Term One Parent Teacher Interviews are fast approaching. This is an opportunity for parents to spend a short amount of time learning about how their child has started the year and gain some insight into the learning needs for them as we move into Term Two. These meetings are only 10 minutes and provide time for a brief overview only. If you feel you further discussion is needed, you are invited to arrange another time with your child’s teacher on a different day at a time suitable to all. Bookings need to be made via the SENTRAL Parent Portal. Parent Teacher Interview times are available on Wednesday 27th March between 3.20pm and 7.00pm and Wednesday 3rd April between 3.10pm and 4.30pm.

Prep and Junior School March Student of the Month (SOTM) - awarded this Friday at our Whole School Assembly - see further for the awards

COLES RAINBOW CHALLENGE

Last week Shaz and a small sampling of our wonderful ’Kids in the Kitchen’ from Middle School created a video showcasing the learning they can articulate so well about good mood food, the nutritional benefits of quality food and the link between garden to table. They have entered into the COLES Rainbow Food Competition which could see schools winning prizes. Regardless of how they go in the competition, they are already winners in being able to educate others about something we think is just so important to understand and develop healthy habits in. A big thanks to Brayden Van Der Pol also for his technical assistance with the video, which can be found on our website.

FUN RUN in on MONDAY 1st APRIL

Our last week of this term begins with our annual Fun Run. Children are encouraged to come to school dressed in their house colours and participate in a day that is about achieving your personal best. The Middle and Senior School students will be running between 9.00am and 11.00am. The Prep and Junior School students will be running between 12.oopm and 1.00pm. Community are welcome to attend to support and encourage the children as well as assist if possible.

Our Junior School Council (JSC) Representatives—Badges awarded this Friday at our Whole School Assembly

JUNIOR SCHOOL COUNCIL community Impact activities - RCH and NEPAL

Our Junior School Council have an agenda each year to support people from all walks of life and need throughout the year. They focus on local community, national and international opportunities, bringing our values to life as well as embedding our belief in living everyday kindness and gratitude. Our local community focus is on our annual support of the ROYAL CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL APPEAL (RCH Appeal). JSC are requesting, where possible, that our GK families make a donation towards this Victorian event before the end of term so that it can be donated during the Easter period on the holidays. An envelope will be heading home shortly for this.

Our National focus is on NEPAL. We recently had our Bhandari Family depart us to live in NEPAL for a short period of time, working and supporting local communities. We also have Sally Armstrong and Shaz (Mackay) heading to Nepal soon, working in impoverished communities. Our work with the Resilience Project a few years ago introduced similar communities in India to our students, educating them about the humanity work that needs to occur and the IMPACT we can make so easily through small donations. It of course also launched our community focus on kindness, gratitude and mindfulness.

THURSDAY 4th APRIL (last week of term) JSC are organising an OUT OF UNIFORM DAY for a gold coin donation or more to send to NEPAL with Sally and Shaz. We know that small deeds count - just $1 from every child in the school will raise $580 with $2 raising $1160. This is a life changing amount so help if you can.

Social Emotional Learning @ GK

Glen Katherine Primary School is committed to providing a safe and respectful envi-ronment and culture. Working together as a community to prevent any form of bully-ing, cyberbullying and other unacceptable behaviours. Our social emotional learning foci is centered around positive self-esteem, cooperation, personal growth and emo-tional literacy. This develops a positive attitude to learning and teaching.

Critical to a school’s successful functioning is the provision of a safe and respectful environment which provides a feeling of security for all students. Positive and appro-priate social and cyberspace behaviours and attitudes are expected. Bullying and harassment in any of its forms is not be tolerated.

Glen Katherine actively promotes a positive and welcoming personal and communal environment for all members of the school community and visitors to the school.

What is bullying and harassment?

Bullying is when someone, or a group of people, deliberately upset or hurt another person or damage their property, reputation or social acceptance on more than one occasion. There is an imbalance of power in incidents of bullying with the bully or bullies having more power at the time due to age, size, status or other reasons. We all have a responsibility to ensure the safety, security and wellbeing of each member of the school community.

Last week students focused on creating a grade pledge on teasing and bullying. Stand Together – student bullying conference will take place during Term 2 for Grades 3-6 .

Bullying. No Way! and Harmony Day

Wear something orange –Thursday 21st March

Harmony Day / Take a Stand against Bullying on Thursday 21st March, – Harmony Day

celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.

Imagine a world free from bullying – lets take a stand together against bullying.

Harmony Day is celebrated annually in Australia and is an important day as it gives Austral-ians an opportunity to celebrate our successes as a culturally diverse country and to share

what we have in common.

The central message for Harmony Day is that ‘Everyone Belongs’, reinforcing the im-portance of inclusiveness for all Australians. Throughout the week we are all encouraged to become better educated on getting along together, respecting each other, sending an anti-

bullying and anti-violence message out to the school community and simply recognisng diversity and acceptance as important factors in our everyday lives. Orange is the official Harmony Day colour, there-

fore we are encouraging everyone to wear a splash of orange to help promote and make a visual statement on the day.

This year GK students will discuss diversity and taking a stand against bullying on Thursday 21st March. They will dis-cuss ideas and complete activities, within their grade and their communal groups (multi-age groups).

A whole school assembly will take place on Thursday morning (in the large gym down near the tennis courts) beginning at 9am. Students will be sharing their Performing Arts ‘Footsteps’ dances with preps starting off at 9:20am.

We ask students to come to school dressed in ORANGE/or a splash of ORANGE (or a costume for their ’Footsteps’ dance) - Orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony. Traditionally, orange signifies social communica-tion and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect.

(It’s not a gold coin donation)

All students have received a Bullying. No Way! wrist band that they can wear to school this week.

What is bullying?

Bullying is an ongoing misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that causes physical and/or psychological harm. It can involve an individual or a group misusing their power over one or more persons. Bullying can happen in person or online, and it can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert).

Bullying of any form or for any reason can have long-term effects on those involved, including bystanders.

Single incidents and conflict or fights between equals, whether in person or online, are not de-fined as bullying.

Is every conflict between students bullying?

Not all aggressive or harmful behaviour between people is bullying. While conflicts and aggressive behaviour need to be ad-dressed, it is important to be clear when these behaviours are not actually bullying. The definition of bullying has three critical aspects: it is a misuse of power within relationships, it is repeated and ongoing, and it involves behaviours which can cause harm. All three aspects need to be present in order for behaviour to be called bullying.

What does the 'misuse of power' mean?

In a situation where there is a power imbalance, one person or group has a significant advantage over another, and if this power is misused, this enables them to coerce or mistreat another for their own ends. In a bullying situation this power imbal-ance may arise from the context (e.g. having others to back you up), from assets (e.g. access to a weapon) or from personal characteristics (e.g. being stronger, more articulate or more able to socially manipulate others).

How is bullying different from violence, harassment and discrimination?

The critical aspect that distinguishes violence, harassment and discrimination from bullying is that bullying happens within social relationships, featuring repeated and harmful behaviours that stem from a misuse of power.

Violence, harassment and discrimination can occur as part of bullying, but can also occur in one-off conflicts or between strangers. It is important to know the difference as the effect on the individual or group may be different and the responses to each may need to be different.

Violence is the intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against another person/s that results in psy-chological harm, injury or in some cases death. Violence may involve provoked or unprovoked acts and can be a single inci-dent, a random act or can occur over time.

Harassment is behaviour that targets an individual or group due to their race, culture or ethnic origin; religion; physical char-acteristics; gender; sexual orientation; marital, parenting or economic status; age and/or ability or disability, and that offends, humiliates, intimidates or creates a hostile environment. Harassment may be an ongoing pattern of behaviour, or it may be a single act.

Discrimination occurs when people are treated less favourably than others because of their race, culture, or ethnic origin; religion; physical characteristics; gender; sexual orientation; marital, parenting or economic status; age and/or ability or disa-bility. Discrimination is often ongoing and commonly involves exclusion or rejection. Intervening early can often prevent harassment, discrimination and more serious negative behaviours from becoming part of a bullying pattern.

Why is the definition of bullying important?

A clear, comprehensive and shared definition is essential to enable schools to identify bullying, and distinguish it from other types of conflicts or violence, so that appropriate strategies and interventions can be used. Positive solutions to bullying are relationship-based, and not only focused on the behaviour of individuals.

Page 5: Glen Katherine Primary School - COMMUNITY is …...Woolworths St Helena – Rolls, Hot Cross Buns, GF Anzacs Coles Greensborough – Bunny Biscuit Just down to a couple of vacancies

What are the different types of bullying?

The types of bullying behaviours are physical, verbal or social. Bullying can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert). Bullying can take place in person or online.

What is covert bullying?

Covert bullying is a subtle type of non-physical bullying which usually isn't easily seen by others and is conducted out of sight of, and often unacknowledged by adults. Covert bullying behaviours mostly inflict harm by damaging another's social reputation, peer relationships and self-esteem. Covert bullying can be carried out in a range of ways (e.g. spreading ru-mours, conducting a malicious social exclusion campaign and/or through the use of internet or mobile phone technolo-gies).

Covert bullying includes social exclusion and intimidation. The term ‘covert’ highlights the fact that not all bullying is physi-cal or obvious to others. Covert bullying can have the same harmful impacts as more obvious bullying, as it can be more isolating, can go on for longer before other people become aware of it, and can be more easily denied by the other person.

What is online bullying (cyberbullying)?

Online bullying (sometimes called cyberbullying) is bullying that is carried out through information and communication tech-nology, including the internet (e.g. on social media sites) and mobile devices. Research indicates that the majority of young people who bully online also bully others in person.

Communication technologies allow for different ways to bully others, but do not change the fact that the bullying behaviour (and not the technology itself) is the main issue. Technology can expand the opportunities for people to bully others and creates new challenges for dealing with bullying.

One action – such as a comment or an embarrassing photo – which is repeated through shar-ing and forwarding to others, can be bullying if the individuals involved know each other, and

have ongoing contact either online or in person.

What is online aggression, and how is it different from online bullying?

Online aggression includes a number of behaviours that occur as single or untargeted acts between people who don’t know each oth-er. For example, ‘trolling’ is intensive verbal abuse of an individual online done anonymously and by strangers. The difference between online aggression and online bullying is that bullying occurs within the context of an existing social relationship.

GK Stands Together!

Thursday, 21 March 2019

From 5.00pm

The GK PFA invites our school community to a FAMILY FUN NIGHT to follow on and support the powerful mes-

sages our children are learning from the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence and Harmony Day.

Let’s get together on Thursday, 21 March 2019 and enjoy some time with family and friends we know and friends

we are yet to discover. From 5pm we invite you to bring picnic food, beverages, blankets and seats to enjoy in our

school grounds.

There will be a sausage sizzle, water and Zooper Doopers for sale on the night.

From 6pm we will be running fun family events for everyone to enjoy and we are going old school with egg & spoon

races, sack races & 3 legged races.

Alongside those, a great opportunity for our kids to showcase their creative side in our GK STANDS TOGETHER.

BULLYING NO WAY! Poster/ banner competition which we will ask the community to vote for and we will present

a prize in assembly the next day as well as use this poster for future fun days!

We will conclude the evening with a photo of our amazing school community standing together with a banner our

kids will contribute to, to show at GK - BULLYING NO WAY!
