CENTRALM-22 SECTIONWINE STOPS EXPLORE ELBERTA
DOWNTOWN FRANKFORT
When you are nearly 10 minutes from Frankfort, you will drive through a chute of trees and see Elberta (1) and Frankfort (2) in the distance, flanked by the burnt oranges and reds against the aqua water of Lake Michigan.

EXPLORE EMPIREQuaint shops, small cafes and outdoor activities are contained within and surround the Village of Empire! Be sure to stop at the Empire Area Museum and their 6 historic buildings showcasing turn-of-the-century 1900s life in the area.

PIERCE STOCKING SCENIC DRIVEFind yourself high atop the Lake Michigan shoreline and explore the National Lakeshore s̓ Scenic Drive. This 7.4 mile drive loops you through the forest and along the coastline. A national park vehicle pass is required for trail and scenic drive use.

When you make your way around Betsie Lake, you will turn left down Main Street through the heart of the downtown, where there are great opportunities to grab lunch, take in some shopping and see the historic Frankfort lighthouse at the waterfront park. If you have time, be sure to drive down Forest and Leelanau Avenues and enjoy the abundance of restored Victorian homes that adorn these streets. Many are painted in vibrant fall colors with lush landscaping and wrap-around porches.

Considered one of the most famous and oldest standing landmarks in all of Benzie County, the Point Betsie Lighthouse marks the southern nautical entrance to the Manitou Passage. It was built in 1858 and may be toured on Saturdays and Sundays through Columbus Day in the early afternoons.

Watersport StopPaddle the Platte
A casual atmosphere featuring artfully prepared favorites like great lakes yellow perch, fresh whitefish, nutty rainbow trout, crispy duck with homemade cherry sauce, BBQ ribs, char grilled steaks and lobster tail.
Get out and enjoy some time on the famous Platte River, a perfect float for all ages. Located right on M-22, offering rafting, kayaking, canoing, tubing and boating. The lower Platte River trip ends right on Lake Michigan and is a perfect way to spend a summer afternoon. The total trip time is about 2-3 hours.

Miles of beaches, bluffs that tower 450ʼ above Lake Michigan, plentiful autumn colors and crystal clear inland lakes await you on this stretch of your M-22 Scenic Coastal Tour! If you feel like stretching your legs, feel free to get out and enjoy the hiking trails of Old Indian Trail (4), Platte Plains (5) or the Empire Bluff Trail (6) in all their fall glory. Explore the deep hardwoods of the National Lakeshore ending on the shores of Lake Michigan on the rolling sands of the dunes. Each trail hike can take 1.0-1.5 hours and you may even spot a few of the coastal shipwrecks along the way.

THE DUNE CLIMBAs you leave the scenic drive, a few miles north you will come across the Dune Climb. This is again a great spot to stop and enjoy the scenery and clear waters of Glen Lake and all of the colors in the distance. The Dune Climb is a great spot to snap a photo of the entire family.

EXPLORE LELAND &HISTORIC FISHTOWN
PYRAMID POINTJust off of Port Oneida Road. Here you will take the walking path through the hardwoods and pop out high atop the bluff to view the awesome autumnal views of the Manitou Islands and Good Harbor Bay. A must stop if you have the time and want to experience a superb Lake Michigan Sunset. Keep in mind, if you do stop, it takes about 90 minutes to go out and back and will delay your arrival to Leland. (Some shops may be closed if you get to Leland too late)

Once you arrive in Leland, you will find excellent shopping, dining and local attractions as well as Historic Fishtown. Fishtown celebrates Northern Michigans̓ commercial fishing heritage and is alive and well in this small community. Fishtown is one of the last remaining commercial fishing villages in the State of Michigan and is now integrated with clothing boutiques, art galleries and specialty food shops.

GLEN HAVENHere you can visit the Sleeping Bear Point Coast Guard Station Maritime Museum as well as many beautifully restored century-old buildings. Next to the Museum you will also find a trail (The Dunes Trail) which gives you another opportunity to hike the Lakeshore.

As you arrive in Glen Arbor, you will find yourself in a bustling little village that thrives throughout the year. Rent bikes, scooters, or just walk around the village and visit destination places like the M-22 shop, Cherry Republic and much more! Also take in the few wine tasting stops in the heart of this quaint coastal community.
