Welcome to Glassboro Public Schools!

Dear Glassboro Resident: Welcome to the Glassboro School District. We pride ourselves on offering curriculum, programs and activities that place Glassboro children on the pathway to success. We welcome community involvement in our schools. Please consider volunteering, attending Board Meetings and coming out to see our outstanding concerts and plays. Thanks to community support, our schools have a fresh look this school year. This summer offered contractors the opportunity to work on roofing, security and HVAC projects. The remainder of the work will continue next summer. We look forward to implementing a new Strategic Plan this school year. Parents, staff and commmunity members helped us develop the plan. One key aspect of the plan will be getting technology into the hands of students and technological support to teachers. Our budget allows for new laptop cart at Bowe, additional Chromebooks at GHS and a part-time district technology coach. Our partnership with Rowan has never been stronger. Bowe became a Rowan University Professional Develop-ment School last year, and Bullock will follow suit this fall. The Fine & Performing Arts Academy partnership continues to flourish. Beginning in 2017, we plan to add Biomedical Courses to our current STEM Academy partnership with Rowan University. Dozens of students enjoyed field trips to Rowan’s Fossil Park last year, and many Glassboro students attended the summer STEAM Academy at Rowan. We look forward to an exciting school year. Thank you for your continued interest and support of Glassboro Schools. Sincerely,Dr. Mark J. MISSION STATEMENT Glassboro Public Schools create a culture that values learning and prepares all to think, achieve, and succeed.

STATEMENT OF VISION We see a partnership of the Board of Education, staff, all students, parents, and community that provides optimum opportunities for success, learning, and high achievement. This partnership is responsible for the execution of the Mission Statement.

CHILD FIND The Glassboro Public School District seeks to identify, find and serve handicapped children who are residents of the district. If you have a handicapped child or know of one who has yet to be brought to our attention, please contact the Child Study Team at 856-652-2700, ext. 6401.

BASIC SKILLS INSTRUCTION Parents of these students have the right to learn about their child’s program and instruction. Please contact your school principal for more information.

AFFIRMATIVE ACTION/NONDISCRIMINATION The Glassboro Board of Education guarantees each student equal educational opportunity and each employee equal job opportunity regardless of race, color, creed, religion, gender, ancestry, national origin, sexual orientation, English proficiency, socioeco-nomic status or disability. For information, including plans, grievance procedures and issues of equal access, please contact Danielle Sochor, Chief Academic Officer, at 856-652-2700, ext. 6301. TITLE IX The Glassboro Board of Education does not discriminate on the basis of sex in admission to or employment in its education programs or activities. Inquiries concerning the application of Title IX may be referred to Mrs. Sochor at 856-652-2700, ext. 6301.

HARASSMENT, INTIMIDATION AND BULLYING The Glassboro Board of Education has adopted a comprehensive policy on harass-ment, intimidation and bullying as prescribed by New Jersey’s Public Law 2010, Chapter 122, known as the Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights. The intent of this law, and Glassboro Board of Education policy, is to ensure positive school climates that promote civility, respect, and caring. Under the Board of Education policy, harassment, intimidation or bullying is defined, in part, as “any gesture, any written, verbal or physical act, or any electronic communication that is reasonably perceived to be motivated by either any actual or perceived characteristic such as race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, or a mental, physical or sensory disability.” It is important for parents to know that the law and policy cover incidents of harassment, intimidation and bullying that occur on school grounds, at school-sponsored functions, on school buses and off school grounds (as in the case of electronic communications) when those acts substantially disrupt or interfere with the orderly operation of the school or the rights of other students. Glassboro School District has appointed a District Anti-Bullying Coordinator and a School Anti-Bullying Specialist in each of our five schools. Contact information can be found on our school websites and in each school’s student handbook.

CURRICULUM Glassboro Public Schools provide a comprehensive educational program by developing a standards-based curriculum built on best-practice, research and study in all academic areas. Our curriculum clearly communicates standards as well as the enduring understandings, essential questions, learning targets, assessments, integration of technology, and resources being used to support teaching and learning in the 21st Century classroom. We strive to implement the highest caliber programs, curricula, and assessments to guaran-tee successful college and career ready learners.

In 2016, New Jersey revised its latest set of state standards, known as “The New Jersey Student Learning Standards.” These standards define general, cross-disciplinary expectations that must be met for students to be prepared to enter college and training programs. These specific standards define end-of-year expectations and a cumulative progression designed to enable students to meet college and career readiness expectations no later than the end of high school. Students advancing through the grades are expected to meet each year’s grade-specific standards, retain or further develop skills and understandings mastered in preceding grades, and work steadily toward meeting the more general expectations described by the standards.

Our district offers a wide variety of programs and services to help students achieve these rigorous standards, as well as their personal, educational, and career goals. The district provides preschool, full-day kindergarten, a gifted and talented program, a program for children in need of academic support, and Bilingual programs. Enrichment and

remedial instruction are available to students through afterschool and extended school year programs. Glassboro supports students with special educational needs through an array of services in all grades, including preschool and kindergarten. Guidance and counseling services are provided in all grades.

Our STEM and Fine and Performing Arts Academies offer advanced learning opportunities to academy students in the 7th - 12th grades and Rowan University Courses to many embers in the 11th and 12th grades. Glassboro is proud to announce we will be offering a Business Academy to eligible students in 12th grade commencing the fall of 2016.

Numerous co-and extra-curricular activities provide students with a rich schooling experience. Glassboro encourages parents and guardians to become actively involved in their children’s education. The district offers numerous opportunities for community participation and input, including comprehensive family nights that afford families an opportunity to learn together.

PREPARING OUR STUDENTS FOR THE FUTURE Academically, students will develop the essentials that will enable them to be informed citizens and productive members of the 21st century. Students will attain literacy skills that allow them to comprehend material in all content areas. All students will acquire the math skills needed to succeed in society, and any student with an advanced aptitude will be offered more intensive training in higher-level concepts. Students will be taught each day using real-world applica-tions of information. They will be encouraged to make modern day connections to cultivate a better understanding of the world around them and how they can make a positive impact on that world.

VOLUNTEERS Glassboro provides a comprehensive Volunteer Training Program for all participants who are interested in serving as parent volunteers. One significant vehicle for parent involvement is a structured volunteer program. When children enter Glassboro Public Schools, teachers and parents must become partners in facilitating children’s learning. One of the most important things we can do for children is to allow them to see parents and teachers working together. This helps children realize that there is a bond between home, community and school. Parent involvement in schooling has been shown to have strong and long-lasting effects on children’s school performance and to benefit the devel-opment of their language, self-help, motor skills, adaptive and basic school skills.

If you are interested in a volunteer opportunity with the Glassboro Public School District please visit our website at www.glassboroschools.us, click on the employment tab and follow the instructions for volunteers. Upon completion of the paperwork you will be invited to a training session. All volunteers must successfully complete a criminal history review check. They will also be finger-printed and must be approved by the Glassboro Board of Education prior to beginning their volunteering assignments.

PUBLIC USE OF SCHOOL BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS School buildings are publicly owned facilities supported by the local taxpayers. For this reason, the Board of Education makes them available to community groups when not being used by students. This is done in accordance with guidelines and policies adopted by the Board. The majority of members of any organization using school buildings and grounds must be Glassboro residents. For more information, call 856-652-2700, ext. 6201.

Annual Integrated Pest Management Notice for School Year 2016-2017

Dear Parent, Guardian or Staff Member:

This notice is being distributed to comply with the New Jersey School Integrated Pest Management Act. Glassboro Public Schools have adopted an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Policy and have implemented an IPM Plan to comply with this law. IPM is a holistic, preventative approach to managing pests that is explained further in the schools’ IPM Policy. This policy can be found at the Board of Education office and is also posted online at www.glassboroschools.us/Page/46. Policy and have implemented an IPM Plan to comply with this law. IPM is a holistic, preventative approach to managing pests that is explained further in the schools’ IPM Policy. This policy can be found at the Board of Education office and is also posted online at www.glassboroschools.us/Page/46.

As part of the school Pest Management Plan, Glassboro Public Schools may use pesticides to control pests. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) register pesticides to determine that the use of a pesticide in accordance with instructions printed on the label does not pose an unreasonable risk to human health and the environment. Nevertheless, the EPA and DEP cannot guarantee that registered pesticides do not pose any risk to human health, thus unnecessary exposure to pesticides should be avoided. The EPA has issued the statement that, where possible, persons who are potentially sensitive, such as pregnant women, infants, and children, should avoid unnecessary pesticide exposure.

TThe Glassboro Public Schools avoids use of any pesticide except when absolutely necessary. A licensed outside contractor is utilized for all pesticide applications. During the past year, the district has not had to use “high impact” pesticides in any buildings or on its grounds. The following low impact pesticides have been used in the buildings or on district grounds while students are not present.

BUILDINGS: GROUNDS: Advion Ant Gel Bait Insecticide Dust Barricade Eagle Advion Roach Gel Bait InVade Bio Drain Dimension Escalade Avert Dry Maxforce Dismiss Last Call Catch Master Glueboards Mint Wasp Spray Dorado Trupower

As the IPM Coordinator, I maintain product labels and material safety data sheets (when available) for each pesticide that may be used on school property. Such information is available for review by any parent, guardian, staff member or student attending the school. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about the use of pesticides by the school district, the Integrated Pest Management Policy and Plan, or the information contained in this letter.

SCHOOL BUS TRANSPORTATION

Mileage Limits

Glassboro Public School District provides transportation for children who qualify according to the guidelines that follow. Transportation must be provided for all elementary students (Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 8) who reside more than two miles from school, and all high school students (Grades 9-12) who reside more than two and a half miles from school. Students who live within these limits, but must walk in an area that is considered hazardous, are transported to school by the Board of Education. Exceptions are granted for children with physical problems certified by a doctor and approved by the Superintendent.

Routes and Stops This year, transportation routes will be combined for a) Rodgers and Bullock, and b) GIS and GHS. Bowe routes will remain separate. Prior to the beginning of each school year, routes are established so that vehicles will travel the roads safely and serve the largest number of students within a reasonable time. Drivers are only permitted to stop at Board-approved bus stops.

Student Responsibilities New Jersey statute 18A:25-2 provides that the driver is in full charge of the school bus at all times and is responsible for order. The driver shall not exclude a student from the bus. If unable to manage a student, the driver will report the matter to the principal. Students must be in compliance with the following rules and regulations:regulations:

At the Bus Stop-Be on time at your bus stop. Plan to arrive 5-10 minutes early.-Remain on the curb- at least 3 feet back from the road.-Show respect for private property.-Avoid crowding or pushing as the bus approaches.-Wait until the bus stops before moving toward the door.-NEVER STAND IN THE ROAD. Do not move into the road as the bus approaches.

While On The Bus -Move quickly to your seat.-DO NOT STAND or move from your seat while the bus is in motion.-Do not change your seat.-The driver or principal may assign seats.-Obey the driver promptly.-No fighting or pushing.-Do not talk with or distract the driver.-Do not open or close windows without the driver’s permission.-Keep hands and all parts of your body inside the bus at all times.-Do not eat or drink on the bus.-Students are responsible for any damage they cause to the bus.-Obey bus safety patrol members.

While on The Bus-continued-IN CASE OF EMERGENCY- remain in your seat until instructions are given by the driver.-Learn how to evacuate your bus quickly.-Do not litter on the bus.-Never throw anything out of the bus window.-Be courteous; talk softly.-Do not use any profane or obscene language.-Report any damage to the bus to the driver.

Getting Off The Bus-Move quickly away from the side of the bus.-Move onto the curb or off the roadway.-To cross the street or roadway, move 10 feet in front of the bus, wait for the driver’s signal to cross, and then move rapidly to the other side.-NEVER GO BEHIND THE BUS TO CROSS THE STREET.

Parent Responsibilities The transportation regulations and the policies adopted by the Board of Educationshould be stressed with your children, not only for their own safety, but for the protection of all students riding the school bus. As per the Transportation Department procedures, a parent/guardian, or designated adult must be at the bus stop to receive all J. Harvey Rodgers and Dorothy L. Bullock School students.

If a parent finds that the bus service is not satisfactory, please notify the Transportation Office (856-652-2700, ext. 6701). If your child leaves something on the bus, please call the Transporta-tion Office. The lost article will be traced and you will be contacted if it is found.

Parents are responsible and liable for any willful or malicious damage done to school buses by their children.

Here are some recommendations to help ensure a safe school bus transpor-tation system. -Help your child to be on time at the bus stop. We recommend arriving 5-10 minutes early.-Don’t ask the driver to stop at places other than the designated stop.-Assume responsibility for educating your child to cooperate with the bus driver.-Insist on correct behavior while waiting for and riding on the bus.-Accompany a very young child to the bus stop and meet the bus when the child returns.-Cooperate with the school officials in discharging discipline requirements in support of a safe transportation system. Parental support in this matter is extremely important.-Send a note to school the day before a child expects to bring a large project on the bus.-Service animals are the only animals permitted on the bus.

SCHOOL BUS TRANSPORTATION - continued

Motorist Responsibilities: Stopping for School Bus If you are approaching or overtaking a school bus and it shows a flashing red light, signaling a stop, you must: • Stop at least 25 feet away. This is required by law if you are on a two-lane road. It also applies if you are on a multilane highway where lanes are only separated by lines.• Slow down to 10 miles per hour on a dual highway, if you are on the other side of a safety island or raised median.• When a school bus has stopped directly in front of a school to pick up or discharge children, you may pass from either direction at a speed of no more than 10 mph.• School buses are equipped with amber and red flashing lights. The amber flashing lights go on 300 feet before the bus stops, followed by the red flashing lights when it has stopped. You cannot always depend on these signals. Stop, watch for children, and then proceed slowly and with caution. After a stop proceed with care when all school bus signals are turned off.• School buses stop for railroad crossings. The buses will use the far right lane or shoulder and may activate directional signals to communicate their intentions to other motorists. School buses will not use their amber or red flashing lights when stopping for railroad crossings.
