INSIDE THIS ISSUE...

It is hard to believe that the end of the year is fast approaching. 2014 has been an ex-citing year in the community. We celebrat-ed the 10th anniversary of the first home sale, we realized the completion of The Groves and Greenfields communities and we welcomed KB Home to the community with the opening of Somerset. The Town of Marana sold the delivery of non-pota-

ble irrigation water to the Cortaro Marana Irrigation District, which will be highly beneficial in reducing the communities irrigation rates. In our vicinity, the Town of Marana is work-ing on improvements along Sandario Rd and celebrated the grand opening of both the Heritage Farm and a new McDonalds located near I-10 and the Marana Road exit.

2015 is shaping up to be a great year as well. Rock re-plenishment along the Moore Rd basin is being scheduled, KB Home has purchased additional land within the devel-opment and the Town of Marana has announced a splash pad to be incorporated into the Gladden Farms Community Park.

I hope that many of you were able to join your Board of Directors and management team at the Annual Meeting of the Members in October. It was a fantastic time celebrating the history of the community thus far and looking ahead to the future of not only your neighborhood, but also Northwest Marana.

Upcoming Meetings

Dr. Wilson of the Marana Unified School District presented information on the upcoming bond election, which would provide the funding for the construction of an elementary school in the community. Chief Rozema spoke about the need for a new police station, which would be located near the Town complex, very close to the community. Mayor Ho-nea and Town Manager Davidson spoke about the Heritage River Park project and the opening of the Heritage Farm. Residents shared stories of their time in the community while enjoying food courtesy of BBQ Rush and Pin Up Pas-tries and the finale included the door prize raffle where all our items were wrapped up like birthday gifts. It was a great evening and if you were unable to attend we hope you will make plans to attend the 2015 Annual Meeting of the Mem-bers, which will be held in late October.

With the holidays upon us I would like to take a moment and thank you all. Each of you make this community a great place to live and to work. I am honored to serve as your Community Manager and I wish you and your families the very best in the upcoming holiday season.

Another area of interest/concern is parking on the street af-ter midnight. I have also copied a portion of that policy here and the remainder is located in the same area on the website noted above.

• As promised in the October newsletter, we’ll be sending out Courtesy notices in November and December to those homes that have a mailbox in need of painting. As a reminder, the colors are Marooned #6020 and Leap Frog #6431 from Sherwin Williams. If you have any questions at all regarding painting your mailbox, please call our office at 520-682-1357. The Association is working on securing pricing from local paint contractors to assist you with this maintenance item.

• If you are thinking about buying a trampoline, play-set, etc. for your backyard for Christmas, please remember to turn in your Architectural Review Form prior to surprising the little ones!

• The 2nd meeting of the Architectural Review Commit-tee in November will be held on November 24th. This will give us plenty of time to notify of approvals prior to the holiday.

Holiday Festival & Christmas Tree LightingWhile we may have to settle for just cool weather instead of cold, the Town of Marana is doing its part to spark seasonal cheer Dec. 6 during its annual Holiday Festival and Christ-mas Tree Lighting. The event takes place at the Marana Municipal Complex (11555 W. Civic Center Dr.) from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Santa and Mrs. Claus are coming to meet with children and get their Christmas lists, local choral and dance groups are performing, food trucks are lining up, hot air balloons are fir-ing up and Miss Arizona, Alexa Rogers, is the event emcee. Topping off the night is the traditional lighting of the tree with

a new twist. This year, the lights are choreographed to a medley of popular Christmas songs, cre-ating a glittering tree that is guar-anteed to amaze the crowd.

As a bonus, the public is wel-come to see the Christmas Tree light performance every day at 6 p.m., 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. from Dec. 7 through Jan. 5. The Town is giving the public opportunities to choose which songs will play during the light show through polls on its Facebook (search Town of Marana) and Twitter (@townofmarana) pages. Civic groups and neighbors are invited to participate in sleigh rac-es at 2 p.m. on Civic Center Drive outside the municipal complex. Sleigh races feature five person teams pushing a specially de-signed bed with wheels over a course while racing against an-other team and the clock. Priz-es are being awarded in several categories, including fastest time and most original costumes by participants. Bring out your inner elf or reindeer and come in full costume for the race. For more information on the Ma-rana Holiday Festival and Christ-mas Tree Lighting and sleigh rac-es, please visit marana.com.

Wholesome Living at Marana Farmers Co-Op

Gladden Farms Residents are fortunate to have, bordering its community, a sustainable farm growing high-quality pro-duce such as cucumbers, carrots, kale, Chinese dates and taro root, peaches, apples, peas, tomatoes, squash and meat from their various grass and grain fed animals - and much more. Dan Arnold, a life-long Arizonan, established the Marana Farmers Co-Op two years ago after living and working in agriculture much of his life. He has leased 26 fertile acres on Postvale Road bordering I-10, with an eye toward leasing an additional 15 acres for more crops. He says, “Our main objective is sustainable local agriculture and educating residents about the convenience, and nu-merous benefits, of locally grown produce.”

Marana Farmers Co-Op presently has about 30 other agri-cultural members offering customers a wide choice of foods and hand-made products every Saturday morning - in ad-dition to the above list, also cantaloupe, gluten-free baked goods, leather and fiber arts and hand-made metal work and other product offerings weekly.

“At other farmers’ markets I’d often see ten Marana farmers there,” he says. “That’s ten tables and ten rental fees for them.” With his Marana Farmers Co-Op effort, one person takes goods from a variety of farmers to sell. Dan Arnold adds, “That saves us money and, equally important, more of us can stay working our farms, which is best to not be away for whole days.” Through the local Community Sup-

ported Agriculture group, people can buy shares in the Co-Op and receive fresh produce every week.

An equally strong vision for Farmer Dan is educating young people about farm life. “It’s all about the kids,” he says, “and having them know that farming and farm life is a good life and essential to all of our futures. We love having children here for them to experience actual farm life and to teach them.”

About sheep, rabbits, chickens, turkeys, goats, desert tortoises of various sizes and a horse that loves children. Farmer Dan’s daughter, Kimberly, oversees the children’s petting zoo and helps care for the animals full-time. She enjoys helping children understand and safely interact with the animals.

During the school year, Kimberly or Dan give tours of their farm and host field trips to further educate children about farm life. Also every second Saturday their market provides art projects for children.

“We feel this is a great way to learn about different foods,” says Farmer Dan. “We suggest ways to prepare produce we grow so people understand and feel comfortable with the locally grown foods they’re eating.”

Besides sharing and educating about local farm life, anoth-er main goal of Dan Arnold is to keep the spirit of Marana’s origins alive - active, wholesome farm life.
