Passion and Resurrection

For a long time, I’ve held to the value of passion. I’ve always felt God calls us to a life filled with passion. I want to be passionate about what I am doing, what I am working on, my hobbies, my love of neighbor, my life of worship, always passionately engaging in this gift of life that God has given us. That firmly held value was given a new distinction in a conversation with my friend Brian who was quick to point out the irony that the Latin root of passion is passio, which means suffering. For the record, I don’t value suffering for the sake of suffering, and to give the Latin even more nuance, it has a secondary meaning, to endure. Passion: to suffer, to endure. I suppose we are passionate about those things that help us endure through suffering. Our passion, our deep caring, grows out of those people and activities that have endured in our lives, especially in times of suffering.

Our journey through this Lenten season continues this month leading us to Holy Week and the Passion of Christ. Moving from a triumphant entry in Jerusalem and a final meal with his followers through betrayal, plotting, and the courts of Pilate to a cross on Golgotha, we witness the passion God has for us, the suffering that God would endure to show the deep caring God has for each of us. As we look to the resurrection, to God putting us back on our feet, may you remember this month that Jesus is passionate about you and that his love endures forever.

Chattanooga’s Hidden History. Have you ever wandered around downtown Chattanooga and wondered what it looked like 100 years ago? Have you ever wanted to hear more about the people and places that made Chattanooga the place that it is today? Maury Nicely, a local attorney with a love of Chattanooga's history, will share some of the great hidden history of our great city. Whether you are new to town or a lifelong resident, you are sure to learn something new!

“Pastor, which of the four Gospels offers the reader the best understanding of Jesus?”

Personally, I am not sure that any one of the four Gospels proves to be better at presenting Jesus to us than the other three. I will say that the Gospel according to Luke offers us significant help in adding to our knowledge and understanding of the ministry of Jesus, who is the Christ. It is the most comprehensive of our four Gospels. And why is this? Luke offers us more history and more biography than Mark, Matthew and John. By rescuing from oblivion and recreating the Birth and Infancy narratives, parables like those of the Good Shepherd, the Good Samaritan, and the Prodigal Son, and incidents like those of raising the widow’s son at Nain, of Jesus in the house of Simon the Pharisee, and of the journey to Emmaus, he has not only given us a deeper knowledge and a clearer understanding of the Gospel message, but has also enriched the liturgy of the Church and the literature and art of the world.

The Gospel of the generous love and mercy of God for all of His human family, as proclaimed by Luke, “the beloved physician” has made a deep appeal to people throughout the ages and has been an unfailing source of inspiration to poets, painters, sculptors, and musicians. But more significantly the Gospel according to Luke has offered, and still offers God’s great love so freely given, to all who will accept it.

FIRST COMMUNION INSTRUCTION – The pastors will offer first communion instruction on Sunday, April 7th from 12:15 – 3:30 pm. Lunch will be provided. Parents are invited and encouraged to stay. The material is geared for those in first grade and older. A sign-up sheet is available at the welcome center. Those participating will be able to make their first communion on Maundy Thursday, April 18th at the 7:00 pm. A reception will follow.

April 14, 2018 – Passion Sunday 8:30, 9:30, 11:00

Our Holy Week begins with Palm-Passion Sunday. On this day, our traditional services will begin at the memorial garden for the procession with palms. We will even be led by a donkey! During

the service we will transition to a more solemn mood as we recount the reason for Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, His passion and death. The service will include a dramatic reading of the

passion narrative.

April 18, 2019 – Maundy Thursday 7:00 p.m. The word “Maundy” is an English form of the Latin word for

commandment. The overarching theme of tonight’s service is our Lord’s new commandment to “Love one another.” The service will include the Sacrament of Holy Communion and conclude with the

traditional stripping of the altar.

April 19, 2019 – Good Friday 7:00 p.m. Fish dinner at 6:00 pm. (sign-up sheet on Sun Porch) Our solemn

Tenebrae service, entitled “Portraits of Darkness” will begin at 7:00 pm. As we follow our Lord’s passion, the candles and

sanctuary lighting will be gradually extinguished.

April 21, 2019 – Easter Sunday 8:30, 9:30 & 11:00 We celebrate the resurrection of our Lord! Youth sponsored

Sunday School Opportunities

Herb Burhenn’s Bible Study Class is now reading early Christian literature from the period just after the completion of the New Testament. We begin at 9:45 in the library.

Family Faith Formation is a multi-generational interactive bible discussion for middle schoolers, high schoolers and adults, led by Anne Cain, Sue Combs, David Combs, & Gary Hart. They meet in the Paul George Room during the Sunday School hour. The discussion centers on readings for the week. All are welcome, so bring your donut and coffee and join us any week you can.

Children’s Sunday School meets in the Youth Room, immediately after the 9:30 service and is led by Sondra Hart & Freia Stephens. Toddlers - 5th grade are encouraged to come, make friends, play games, and learn about Jesus, the Bible and what it means to be a Christian. We start with prayer requests, have a short lesson, play games, or have activities that reinforce the lesson; then end class by holding hands and reciting the Lord’s Prayer.

Office hours are 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday. If you need to come in at another time, you may make an appointment by calling the church office, 870-1236.

Pastor Combs will be in the office Mondays and Wednesdays, 9:30—1:30, and by appointment.

Pastor Smith will be in the office Wednesdays and Thursdays, 9:30—1:30, and by appointment.
