Jim’s CornerBy James Higdon

GLA ARMA President

President s Message

There are two positions that we wouldlike to fill this year and am asking yourhelp: Public Relations & Education. Both are equally important. AsEducation Director, your responsibilitieswould be to plan our Fast Track sessionearly next year and be responsible forpulling together some of our strong, localprofessionals to speak to the member-ship. Our Public Relations Directorwould focus on contacting vendors tosupport GLA by either advertising on thewebsite, News & Views or possiblysponsoring an upcoming event. If weare unable to fill either of these two posi-tions this year, the chance that next yearwill be a year of "catch-up" instead of ayear of progress increases. Please con-tact me if you are interested or knowsomebody interested at: [email protected]. I can guarantee that you willenjoy getting to know some this year sgroup while you give a little back to thechapter. It is a great opportunity to makenew friends and make a dent at thesame time.

I hope to see all of you soon.

It is very exciting that the Director ofArchives and Records Management forthe J. Paul Getty Trust has become anactive member in our chapter and more-over, is hosting the December meetingat the Museum. This has been a work inprogress for the last three months:allowing us to use their wonderful site, providing the speakers, the parking, thesecurity, and the wine. No doubt this willbe an unforgettable event for GLA.However, due to increased security con-cerns, we will all have to be registered inadvance through the website. The tar-get date to have December s ChapterMeeting detailed posted is mid-November. Please check ARMA-GLA.ORG for the details and spread theword.

I would like to take this month s columnspace to talk about the GLA Board. Thisyear s group of seventeen people, havebeen a delight to work with and I lookforward to each meeting because ofthem. A few members officially joinedthe group late this year, in August andothers as late as this month. It is nevertoo late to volunteer!

October Meeting RecapTodd Farr ([email protected]), the principalof Daisy Gibson Elementary School, pre-sented "Maximizing Your LeadershipQualities" at the October Chapter meeting —if you weren t there, you missed a thought-provoking evening. He discussed six quali-ties of adaptive leadership, which includecreating a climate of trust and a healthyempowering environment. He also showeda United Way video "Tool Kit for a NewMillennium." He mentioned the "FISH" phi-losophy, an upbeat look at the novel work ofSeattle s famous Pike Place fish market. The fish market is a "must" stop for localsand tourists alike because the employees"toss" your selection, with a lot of loud andlively banter, and they "work" at having funto liven up the day for everyone withinearshot. In brief, the "Fish" philosophy is"choose your attitude, play, make their day,and be present". As one who s visited themarket, first as a tourist and then later as alocal, I can promise that you will likely buyfish, and you will definitely remember theexperience. For more information visitwww.fishphilosophy.com.

Farr also showed portions of a captivating

"60 Minutes" (November 2000) interviewwith Jack Welch, General Electric s CEOand author of the current bestseller, Jack.Welch is regarded as our country s #1 CEO,with all others running only a distant second. His story and philosophy are fascinating, and incidentally, he s donating his $7M pro-ceeds from the book to charity. He believescompanies must annually "discard" (layoff)the lowest performing 10% of their employ-ees to be competitive. Keeping theseemployees does a disservice not only to thecompany s bottom line, but also to the peo-ple themselves and to the other companiesthat could better utilize their skills — certain-ly an interesting view. For more informationon General Electric visit ge.com.

If you want to know more about Jack Welch,or any of the other interesting informationFarr shared, I suggest you "beg, borrow orsteal" one of the CDs which he generouslyprovided everyone that evening. It includesmany of the tools used in his presentation, including the Welch interview. My insideinformation is that Jim Higdon, our fearlessChapter president, has some extras to sharewith the first few of you who request one.
