Strengthening of GKMS

In collaboration with Space Application Centre, NRSA, ICAR and other organisations efforts are being made to incorporate satellite based information for monitoring and assessing near real time crop status in as well as development of products for crop and location specific agromet advisories. In line with this initiative, Agrimet Division, IMD, Pune organised workshop on “Applications of satellite information in Gramin Krishi Mausam Sewa” at Meteorological Training Institute, IMD, Pashan, Pune on 27th March 2014. High level dignitaries namely Dr. L. S. Rathore, DGM, IMD, New Delhi, Dr. V.K. Dadhwal, Director, NRSC, Hyderabad, Dr. B. N. Goswami, Director, IITM and Scientists from different organisations participated in the workshop. The basic purpose of this workshop was to build mechanism of use of satellite information in operational Agromet Advisory Services not only from the Indian satellites but also the other satellites available from other parts of the world. Different working groups have been formed to implement the concept operationally. Proceeding of the workshop will be made available in the URL: http://www.imdagrimet.gov.in/

Sensitizing media personnel on the communication of agromet advisories. Media is a powerful channel for dissemination of of sensible weather information and Agromet advisories to the farming community through multimedia including mobile technology. Under GKMS project, linkages are being established with different medias. Agrimet Division, IMD, Pune organised National Level Media Workshop on “Communication of Agromet Advisories to the User Communities” at Meteorological Training Institute, IMD, Pashan, Pune on 28th March 2014. High level dignitaries namely Dr. L. S. Rathore, DGM, IMD, New Delhi, Shri Ashish Bhatnagar, Deputy Director General (Engg.), All India Radio, Pune, Dr. Swati Sardesai, NIC, Pune, Prof. M.C. Varshneya, Ex-Vice Chancellor, AAU, Anand and Scientists from different organisations participated in the workshop. The basic purpose of this workshop was to make media personnel aware about weather processes and usefulness of weather information for the purpose of agriculture, educate them about various terminologies, concepts and definitions. Visit of Agricultural Ministers of Gujarat to Agromet Observatory Honorable Agricultural Ministers of Government Of Gujarat, Shri Babubhai Bokhiria (Cabinet) and Shri Govindbhai Patel (State level), Dr. N.C. Patel, Vice Chancellor of Junagarh Agricultural University and Dr. C. J. Dangaria, Director of Research, JAU visited Agromet observatory at AMFU, Targhadia, Gujarat on 30th January, 2014. Shri V.D. Vora, Technical Officer of GKMS Unit, briefed them regarding the activities of GKMS and SMS service to the farmers through Farmer Portal.

Capacity Building

Capacity building on use of software eAgromet: An IT-based Agro-meteorological Advisory has been developed in collaboration with International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIIT) for automated preparation of AAS bulletin for a given weather situation. Training in two batches has been conducted at Agro Climate Research Centre, Agricultural Research Institute, Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad on use of eAgromet Software System from 4-7th & 24-27th March, 2014 for Agromet Field Unit Scientists.

Training course on ‘Application of Weather Based Agrometeorological Advisories’ for Telefarm Advisors of Kisan Call Centre, Pune was organised during 12-15 March 2014 at Agrimet Division, Pune in order to communicate weather and agromet advisories to the farmers of Maharashtra through Kisan Call Centres. 37 participants from Kisan Call Centre, Pune, Maharashtra participated in the training.

Shri V.D. Vora, Technical Officer, AMFU, Targhadia, Gujarat participated in training programme in Dhrol and Jodiya taluka of Jamnagar district jointly organized by ATMA project, Jamnagar and DFRS, JAU, Targhadia during 19-21 February, 2014 and also participated in training programme for the farmers of Rajsitapur village of Dhangdhra taluka of Surendranagar district jointly organized by Gramin Suvidha Kendra project, Dhangdhra and DFRS, JAU, Targhadia on 15th March, 2014. During training periods, lecture on usefulness of Agromet Advisory for farmers and all activities of GKMS project was given to farmers. Farmers also visited Agro meteorology observatory. Information on crop management and sustaining soil fertility was also provided. Shri. V. Gopakumar, AM II, Meteorological Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala has undergone training on Basics of Remote Sensing & GIS and its application in Agriculture held at MNCFC, ICAR, PUSA, New Delhi during 10-14 March, 2014.

Farmers Awareness Programme

Meteorological Centre, Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir, o r g a n i z e d F a r m e r s ’ A g r o -m e t A wa r e ne s s Programme on 25th March, 2014 at KVK–Pulwama. Farmers informed about agro

-meteorological advisories disseminated through GKMS bulletins. An interactive session with farmers was conducted and feedback was collected from the farmers regarding dissemination, accuracy and usage of GKMS bulletins.

AMFU, Junagadh, Gujarat participated in Farmers Awareness Programme jointly organized by Sardar Smruti Kendra, Junagadh Agricultural University, ,Junagadh and KVK, Rajkot

during 2-3 January, 2014. 50 farmers of Rajkot taluka, Dist. Rajkot participated in this programme. Prof. M. C. Chopada, Nodal Officer had delivered a lecture on 'Importance of weather forecasting in agricultural crop production. He also explained about various meteorological instruments and importance of weather elements for the growth and development of crops to the farmers.

AMFU, Anand, Gujarat organized Farmers Awareness Programme on 3rd March, 2014 on “Climate change and Agro Advisory Services”. Lectures were delivered by the expert. Posters on Agro Advisory Services were

displayed, documentary on meteorological instruments was shown to 100 farmers participated in FAP. Also AMFU, Anand organized Farmers Awareness Program at sub-centre of AAU ‘Tribal women Training Centre’ Dahod to create awareness of weather based agromet advisory service in tribal area. Director of Research and Principal addressed farmers. Expert lectures were delivered by Dr. Vyas Pandey (PI), Dr. H. R. Patel (Agrometeorologist) and Prof. Rucha Dave (Co-PI) about importance of agro advisory service and its dissemination. AMFU, Anand has started providing agromet advisory for whole Gujarat state which is broadcasted in Krishi Samachar of Krishi Darshan programme on DD Girnar channel of Doordarshan.

AMFU, Kakdip, West Bengal o r g a n i z e d F a r m e r s Awareness Programme on 10th January, 2014. Discussion was made on effect of weather in winter crop cultivation and natural

calamities. Farmers were made aware about SMS service through Farmer Portal, gave suggestion on need basis and collected the feedback from farmers.

AMFU, Trissur, Kerala o r g a n i z e d F a r m e r s Awareness Programme on 30th January, 2014 for lead Farmers. 50 farmers participated in FAP. Lectures were given by

different experts on various topics namely impact of weather on agriculture, importance of agromet advisories, influence of weather on pest and diseases (especially in banana), organic farming, importance of soil testing and feedback collection. 3 field visits were organized during the period. Brochure about Agromet Advisory Service were distributed to 1000 farmers during South Indian Agri Expo 2014.

AMFU, Jharnapani, Nagaland organized Farmers Awareness P r o g r a m m e a t Dhasiripar village, Dimapur district on 18th February, 2014.

21 farmers had participated in the programme. Imtisenla Walling, Technical Officer highlighted the usefulness and benefit of GKMS, mentioning that the services will help farmers not only for increasing productions but also reducing losses due to changing weather patterns and other associated problems. Dr. Ebibeni, SMS, KVK Dimapur, delivered talk on the impact of climate change on livestock and their mitigation strategies. Hifzul Hoque, SRF explained about the role of weather in relation to crop diseases. Organic remedial measures were suggested to the farmers for managing crop pests and diseases. Apong, SRF, facilitated discussions between the farmers and the experts by focusing and prioritizing the actual problems faced by the farmers in these villages.

Imtisenla Walling, Technical Officer, AMFU Jharnapani participated as a resource person during the awareness programme on "Creation of rural economy through livestock farming” which was jointly organized by ICAR Nagaland Centre, Jharnapani and AICRP-Pig, Nagaland University- SASRD, Medziphema on 6th March 2014. Importance and usefulness of Kisan Mobile Advisory Service was apprised to the participants. Farmers were encouraged to share their feedback on crop pest and livestock problems through SMS for expert advice. Imtisenla Walling, Technical Officer, AMFU Jharnapani participated as a resource person during the Farmers-Scientist Interaction conducted by ATMA Dimapur on 17 March, 2014. "Farmers Mobile Advisory Service" was made aware to the farmers. Field visit

A pilot project has been taken up in collaboration with Mahindra Samriddhi at Pune and Parbhani in Maharashtra for dissemination of weather based agromet advisories to the farmers by SMS through Mahindra’s web portal. In

this regard, field visit was organized at Satgao Pathar, Village-Kurwandi, Tahsil-Ambegaon, District Pune, Maharashtra on 31st January 2014. Shri K. G. Kanade S. A., Smt Swati Chandras, S. A. IMD, Agrimet Division, Shri S. B. Karbade, Nodal Officer of AMFU, Pune, Shri Ghadge, Extension of Agriculture, Shri Harshwardhan Nawathe, Deputy General Manager, Mahindra and Mahindra participated in the field trip.

AMFU, Ananthapuram, Andhra Pradesh made field visit on 6th January, 2014 to Bengal gram and Red gram fields at Kampamalla, Dornipadu, Bheemunipadu of Koilkuntla mandal on

request of the farmers to observe the flower and pod damage and drop due to fog occurrence on 05th January, 2014. They also visited chickpea fields at Kampamalla village, Koilakuntla mandal of Kurnool district on 7th January, 2014 to observe wilt incidence in Bengal gram and suggested the measures to avoid wilt incidence in the next cropping season. Field visit on 10th January, 2014 at Koilakuntla and Sanjamala, Kurnool district was made and incidence of Helicoverpa and Spodoptera in Bengalgram was observed and suggested the control measures to the farmers.

AMFU, Targhadia, Gujarat organized field visit to Patameghpar village of Kalavad Taluka, Jamnagar district on 16th January, 2014 and on 3rd February 2014. Farmers were informed regarding the activities of GKMS unit-Targhadia, information regarding current weather bulletin and prevailing crop conditions and remedies of existing pest and diseases and management of soil health, pest and diseases of rabi crops and their management by Shri V.D. Vora, Technical Officer of GKMS.

Shri V. D. Vora, Technical Officer and Dr. G. S. Sutaria, (Soil Scientist), Targhadia organized a night meeting with the farmers of Patameghpar village (NICRA Village) on 03rd February, 2014, to increase farmers awareness about the activities of GKMS and to increase soil biomass activities for sustainable productivity of agricultural crops by maintaining good soil health. The discussion on in situ composting and of situ composting of cotton stalk and other farm residues by using mobile chopper and rotator was made. Farmers also informed about SMS by farmer portal.

Shri V. D. Vora, Technical Officer, AMFU, Targhadia, Gujarat made field visit on 26th February, 2014 to Samatpar and Dhedhuki villages. Information on control measures of stem borer and termite infestation in wheat, leaf curling in Kagdi lime due to Psylla and thrips and sowing of summer sesame were given to the farmers.

On 1st March, 2014, he made field visit to Movaiya village of Paddhari taluka of Rajkot district. Farmers were aware about activities of GKMS project and detailed information on how to increase crop production by maintaining soil fertility were also given.

On 2nd March, 2014, he made field visit to Shivrajgadh village, Gondal taluka, Rajkot district. Information on in situ residue management of cotton stalks by mobile cotton stalk chopper was given to the farmers.

In the field visit on 30th March, 2014 to Devchadi, Bandra and Shivrajgadh villages, he explained importance of irrigation, fertilizers and pest management in summer sown sesame and groundnut to farmers.

AMFU, Kakdip, West Bengal organized field visit on 20th January, 2014. Interaction was made on winter crop cultivation and their protection measures. AMFU, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh organized a field visit to village-Basantpatti, PO-Gangapur, Distt-Varanasi on 12th January 2014 and to village-Khetalpur, Distt-Sant Ravidas Nagar on 25th January, 2014 to monitor the

growth and development of different winter season crops like wheat, mustard, field pea, sugarcane, vegetables and also organized a small Kisan Gosthi at village-Chakiya, PO- Nigatpur, Distt-Mirzapur. 75 farmers participated in the programme.

AMFU, Bhawanipatna, Odisha made two field visits at the village Goudtola, Block- Kesinga, Dist-Kalahandi on 12th March, 2014 and at the village Dahal, Block- Narla, Dist- Kalahandi on

29th March, 2014 to study about weather condition and pest incidence of crops at that stage. Interaction with farmers on probability of pest occurrence of crops, their remedial measures and use of AAB and Kisan SMS has been made. 36 farmers participated in the field visit. They informed that Kisan SMS helped them in getting weather forecast and crop advisories, plant protection measures etc. Farmers Day

AMFU, Targhadia, Gujarat participated in Farmers Day jointly organized by Dry Farming Research Station, JAU, Targhadia and IFFCO for farmers of Sanosara village and surrounding villages of Rajkot

taluka on 11th March, 2014. Shri V.D. Vora, Technical Officer highlighted the activities of GKMS project and also informed the importance of integrated nutrient management, soil health, soil fertility and sustainable soil productivity.

Farmers meeting AMFU, Ananthapuram, Andhra Pradesh organized meeting on “Management of Pest and Diseases in Bengal gram” with the farmers o f K a m p a m a l l a , Bheemunipadu, Kristipadu

villages of Koilakuntla mandal of Kurnool district on 07th January, 2014.

AMFU, Jharnapani, Nagaland organized farmers meeting at Dhomokia village, Dimapur district on 24th February, 2014. 46 farmers actively p a r t i c i p a t e d i n t h e

programme. Kisan Mobile Advisory Service which provides location – specific and crop, livestock specific farm advisory services to the farming community were apprised to the farmers by the Technical Officer, Imtisenla Walling. Farmers were encouraged to utilize the service for betterment of their livelihood. Field visit was also conducted where disease infected samples of different vegetable crops were collected for identification by the scientist in the laboratory. Problems faced by the livestock farmers were given different management practices by Dr. Ebibeni, SMS, KVK Dimapur. On 3rd March, 2014, AMFU, Jharnapani organized farmer meeting cum field day at Khuzama Village, Kohima district where 40 farmers participated in the programme. Lectures on different aspects of weather and its impacts on agriculture and livestock were delivered. Kisan Mobile Advisory Service was also highlighted to the farmers where the contact numbers of interested farmers were collected. Farmers actively participated in the discussion, where they were advised management practices to be followed. Field visit was made and the problems faced by the farmers on both pest and diseases in potato were noted. AMFU, Jharnapani organized farmer meeting at Mhainamtsi village, Peren district on 12th March, 2014. 36 farmers attended the farmers meeting. Gramin Krishi Mausam Seva was introduced to the farmers. Benefits of Kisan Mobile Advisory Service which is free of cost were also made known to them which will help the farmers to cope with sudden change in weather that affects crop and livestock production.

AMFU, Varanasi, KVK Kattipur, Varanasi and KVK Sant Ravidas Nagar, Uttar Pradesh organized farmers meeting at village- Bhimchandi, Block-Rajatalab, Distt-Varanasi; and Block-Aurai , Distt-Sant

Ravidasnagar. 50 farmers actively participated in the programme. This AMFU also organized a small Kisan Gosthi on 09th February, 2014 at village-Nuvao, Block- Kashi Vidhyapeeth, Distt-Varanasi. 75 farmers participated in Kisan Ghosti. Objective of field visit was to increase farmer’s awareness to access timely weather forecast and to save and manage accordingly his crops/animals/fish and explained role of weather forecast information in obtaining more economic yield through its timely access by farmers. AMFU, Bhawanipatna, Odisha participated in Kisan Mela organized by KVK, Kalahandi at village Boria, Kesinga Block, Dist-Kalahandi on 6th February, 2014. Farmers were

given information about GKMS, AAS bulletin and Kisan SMS. 535 farmers participated in the Kisan Mela.

AMFU, New Delhi participated in Kisan Mela at IARI, New Delhi during 26-28 February, 2014. Awareness of Agromet Advisory Service was created by poster display in the thematic and Division pandal and agromet advisory bulletin along with folder entitled “मौसमीयतत्वों का आंकलन एंव कृषिप्रबन्धन में मौसम पवूाानमुान का महत्व” were distributed among the farmers.

AMFU, Majihian, West Bengal, participated in Krishi Mela organized by Department of Agriculture, Govt. of West Bengal during 7-9 January, 2014. Leaflet on “Agromet Advisory Services” for farmers’

awareness about weather based agromet advisory services were distributed.106 farmers participated in the Krishi Mela. Also distributed leaflet in Krishi Mela organized by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Dakshin Dinajpur on 3-4 March, 2014 to create awareness among farmers about agromet advisory services.

AMFU, Kakdip, West Bengal participated in Krishi Mela during 24-28 January, 2014. Farmers informed about agromet advisories and interaction with farmers about

crop cultivation and crop protection was made.

A M F U _ H i s a r , H a r y a n a participated in Kisan Mela during 12-13 March, 2014. More than 5500 farmers visited Weather Based Agro-advisory Services Stall in Kisan Mela. In

interactive session with farmers, farmers were informed about weather forecasting for agriculture and weather SMS Registration. More than 5500 farmers registered for Mobile Weather SMS service during Kisan Mela. Already registered 450 farmers of weather SMS service were given feedback regarding weather based agromet advisory services benefits in day to day field work. At present, more than 80,000 farmers of the State have so far been registered for getting free weather SMS service.

Krishi Vasant Shri. K.G.Kanade, S.A. and Shri. S.Y. Waghmare, S.A. had participated in ‘ Krishi Vasant 2014 - A National Agriculture Fair cum Exhibition’ held at Central Institute of Cotton Research (CICR), Nagpur during 9 to

13 February, 2014. More than one lakh farmers visited the IMD’s stall. Feedback on Agromet Advisory Services from about 350 farmers of different regions of the country has been collected.

Agromet Advisory on Livestock-Animal Health Camp AMFU, Kirei, Odisha organized one day ‘Animal Health Camp & Summer Care for Animals’ on 30th March, 2014. Medicine and leaflet were distributed regarding animal health

and summer care for animals among farmers. 75 farmers participated in the camp. Deworming for the animals were carried out. The veterinary surgeon along with Nodal Officer keenly observed the animals

Dr. N. Chattopadhyay, DDGM (Agrimet), Pune attended and gave presentation on ‘Verification of district level weather forecast’ in the ACR/AMR meeting held at RMC , Chennai during 22-23 January 2014.

Dr. A. Kashyapi, Scientist-E and Smt. S. V. Chandras, S.A. , Agrimet Division, Pune participated and presented papers on the topics entitled “Impact of Asian monsoon in changing climate on Kharif crops- Agromet Services towards sustainable solution’’ and ‘Use of ICT in Operational Agrometeorological Services’ respectively in INTROMET-2014 held at SRM University, Kattankulathur, Tamil Nadu during 21-24th February ,2014 jointly organized by IMD and SRM University, Kattankulathur, Chennai.

Dr. N. Chattopadhyay, DDGM (Agrimet) & Smt. S. V. Chandras, S.A. participated in the State Level Consultation cum Workshop on Climate Change Adaptation organized by Watershed Organisation Trust (WOTR), Pune at Sun N Sand Hotel, Bund Garden Road, Pune on 7th March 2014.

Seminar Dr. D. P. Dubey, Scientist E, Meteorological Centre, Bhopal attended seminar at Agriculture Training institute on

5th March 2014 . He gave lecture on ‘Climate change and its effects on crop’. Imtisenla Walling, Technical Officer, AMFU Jharnapani participated in the National Seminar on “ Emerging

Challenges and Prospective Strategies for Hill Agriculture in 2050” organized by Indian Association of Hill farming in collaboration with ICAR, Nagaland Centre, Jharnapani, conducted during 23 – 25 January, 2014.

Lectures Dr. A. Kashyapi, Scientist-E, IMD, Agrimet Division, Pune delivered lecture in the Phase-I of Advanced Met.

Training Course (AMTC) on ‘Basic ideas of Agricultural Meteorology including energy and water budget of crops’ on 31st January, 2014.

Dr. K. Ghosh, Scientist-D, IMD, Agrimet Division, Pune delivered lecture in the Phase-I of Advanced Met. Training Course (AMTC) on ‘Micrometeorology- Definition and generation of microclimates, elements of microclimatology’ on 30th January, 2014 .

Shri. R. Balasubramanian, Scientist-C, IMD, Agrimet Division, Pune delivered lecture in the Phase-I of Advanced Met. Training Course (AMTC) on ‘Crop yield relationship with weather elements and crop weather calendar’ on 20th January, 2014.

Shri Tasvina Borah, Scientist in charge, GKMS, Jharnapani, Nagaland delivered lecture on the importance of Gramin Krishi Mausam Sewa and Kisan Mobile Advisory Service during the training programme on ‘Improving e-governance in agriculture’ which was held from 28 - 31 January, 2014 at ATMA Sameti hall.

Dr. S. L. Godara, Professor (Plant Pathology) and Nodal Officer, AMFU, Bikaner, Rajasthan delivered lecture on “Citrus canker and phytophthora disease of citrus and their integrated disease management in state level workshop on Precision farming technologies for citrus during 23 – 24 January, 2014 at Agricultural Research Station, SKRAU, Bikaner.

Dr N. K. Pareek, Technical Officer AMFU, Bikaner, Rajasthan delivered lecture on “Agromet Advisory Services : A Way to Help the Farmers in Climate Change Conditions” in 21 days refresher course on “Climate Change: Scenario, Impact on Agriculture and Mitigation Strategies” organised by Directorate of Human Resource Development, SKRAU, Bikaner, Rajasthan during 18th February to 10th March 2014.

Imtisenla Walling, Technical Officer, AMFU Jharnapani participated as a resource person during the training programme on "Mushroom cultivation, spawn production, value addition for livelihood Improvement” organized under Tribal sub plan project from 12-14th February 2014, training programme on "Nutritional Security and income generation through Farming System approach” from 6- 7th March 2014 at KVK-Training Hall and training programme on "Entrepreneurship development through pig farming” organized by KVK Dimapur and sponsored under Tribal sub plan project from 18-19th

March 2014. Importance and usefulness of Agromet Advisory Service and Kisan Mobile Advisory Service were introduced to the farmers. Farmers were encouraged to utilize the service for betterment of their livelihood.

Kamble was presented in International Tropical Meteorology Symposium (INTROMET – 2014) held during 21-24 February, 2014 by SRM University, Kattanlulathur, Tamil Nadu and has been awarded silver medal for “Best Poster Presentation”.
