EFFECTIVELY
TRANSITIONING TO A
REMOTE WORKFORCE
Before the Coronavirus outbreak, there were many reasonswhy employees worked from home. For some, it's aboutremoving distractions and finishing work. For others, theysimply live too far away. For some, it's about maintaining awork-life balance, and sometimes it's outside influencesthat affect the whole company, including weather, naturaldisasters, loss of power, or even contagious illness. Prior to March 2020, a full third of companies allowed someemployees to work from home, with up to 25% ofAmericans telecommuting at least once a week (1). Withtechnologies such as cloud-based applications, videoconferencing, VoIP calling, and others in play, remoteemployees are fully enabled to get their job done, no matterwhere they are. Because of the prevalence of employees working fromhome, we have insights into the pros and cons that faceremote workers and their organizations. These insights are crucial when most companies havesuddenly moved to an almost entirely remote workforce. Allowing employees to work remotely obviously offersbenefits such as health and safety during times of nationalemergencies. However, traditionally, for some employees, remote work has provided improved employee satisfaction, reduced attrition, increased productivity, and decreasedunscheduled absences. For the company, it offers a greatlyexpanded pool of potential talent and less overhead costs.

A NEW APPROACH TO MANAGING
Managing a remote team also comes with it'sown set of challenges. While there are variousissues bosses have stated as the reason theydon’t like having employees work from home, itoften boils down to a couple of simple facts:they want to know that their employees areworking and that they're doing OK. In a traditional office environment, it’s easy towalk by an employee’s desk and gauge attitudeand productivity. It’s obviously not as easywhen someone is miles away.

WHO'S THRIVING &
WHO'S STRUGGLING?
Even with all of these benefits, there aresome challenges. Generally, employees whowork from the office are blending home andwork – they check personal email, tend tokids, use social media sites, make personalplans, pay bills online, etc. It should beexpected that an employee working remotelyis going to blend home and work life. While this can lead to a wonderful work-lifebalance for some, it may not turn out thisway for others.
Self-motivatedSelf-directedSelf-disciplined
While some employees thrive in a remoteenvironment, showing increased levels ofproductivity and job satisfaction, others donot. Employees who thrive in a remoteworkplace are;
Additionally, some employees find theisolation from their colleagues verychallenging. The lack of direct personalinteraction can have consequences onmood, morale, and job engagement.
THE CHALLENGE OF GAUGING
PRODUCTIVITY
Veriato 03
Metrics Based Management Measuring productivity based on results requires quantifiable metrics, which can bechallenging for businesses to define. Just because an employee is connected to the office by aVPN doesn’t mean they’re working. And it also doesn’t necessarily mean they’re not. In jobfunctions like a call center representative, a simple metric of calls per hour can be used. However, when you have employees with varying responsibilities, creating metrics for eachperson will be required, with some degree of frequent revision. Keep in mind that meeting a defined goal doesn’t necessarily equate to productivity. If goalsare set too low, an employee accomplishing the desired result may not be working at fullcapacity. Additionally, if a goal is set too high, an employee missing a target may be wronglyinterpreted as "they're not working hard enough."
Application-Specific Activity Applications like SalesForce have their own built-in auditing of activity, giving managementinsight into whether or not work is being done. While this will provide a documented trail ofactivity, it’s important to note it is limited to the use of a single application. It would be quite alaborious task to manually correlate data from every application used to reconstruct anemployee’s day.
DATA DRIVEN
MANAGEMENTIS IT TELLING THE WHOLE
STORY?
Holistic ViewAn employee can’t be measured on a single activity oraction. They need to be measured on the entirety of theirwork. Depending on the job function, an employee’s day ismade up of a mixture of corporate, local and internet-basedapplications, internet-based data and resources, email, chat, and even social media. To effectively measure productivity, you need to be watching each activity individually, as well astheir summation, to determine an employee’s productivity. Individuals & Their GroupsAdditionally, measuring one employee against a peer groupprovides perspective as to whether they are spending toolittle, just enough, or too much time performing an activity.Viewing the productivity of a group allows you to identifythe best practices of your top producers, creating abenchmark of efficiency standards. Cross group comparisoncan also help identify employees requiring additionaltraining. Being Proactive Not ReactiveLastly, measurement should be done using a proactivemethodology where standards are defined, and a properreview of activity can be done quickly and efficiently.Employees are the lifeblood of every organization, so it's theresponsibility of executive management to proactivelyaddress the new issues surrounding a remote workforce, including data-driven visibility into employee activity, productivity, levels of engagement, and employeesatisfaction.

2.
3.
4.
5.
When workers are remote, it's often difficult toobserve the actual levels of productive activity, attitude changes, and social withdrawal fromcolleagues.
Visibility is KeyThe ability to see productivity drops is invaluable, whether it's disengagement, a training issue, orsomeone struggling to work in their new "workfrom home" environment. Additionally, the abilityto identify changes in attitude, early on, can keepa valued employee from leaving the company orstop the growth of a toxic team environment.Luckily technology can help.
