The Chippewa Area Mentor Program is looking for mentors! Time is one of the most valuable gifts we can give children. Become a mentor and spend 30 minutes per week having fun and building a relationship with a young person. Mentoring involves being matched with a student, grade K-12, and meeting with him/her one day a week, at school, for 30-minutes to talk, play games, toss a ball, or take a walk. You'll be amazed at how just 30-minutes out of your day means so much to the child you spend it with! Please log onto: Mentor Program or call us at 715.726.2400 ext. 2474.

It’s hard to believe that our fall sports have wrapped up already. Congratulations to all the middle school athletes who participated in cross country, volleyball and football. Thank you also to the coaches for their time and dedication – it is very much appreciated. As well, we can’t forget the parents – for transporting your children to/from their games and practices and for running the concession stand during the home games at Holy Ghost and McDonell. The World’s Finest Chocolate bar sale has ended. A gentle reminder that if you have not already turned in your money, please do so at your earliest convenience. We look forward to a successful basketball season for grades 5-8 this winter. Come out to the games to support the athletes! Anyone with children in NDAA sports is a member of our booster club. We invite you to attend our monthly meetings – always the second Wednesday of the month; 6:00 pm in the McDonell library. Our meetings are only one hour and we welcome your ideas & suggestions. It’s also a great way to meet other parents. Have a very blessed Thanksgiving.

email: [email protected] The Spirit of the Macks Silent-Live Auction was held on October 7, 2017 in the McDonell gymnasium. Thank you to all who attended and were so generous! Initial reports suggest that our profits from this event are down approximately $10,000 from the previous year. A special thank you to Steve Bohl and Bob Shakal for working as our busing directors. They worked very hard on a grant application and even though we were not selected, we are very appreciative of their efforts. Fund raising efforts on this front will continue. We are always looking for volunteer bus drivers to transport our athletes to events. If interested, you will need to obtain a Class B CDL with a “P” endorsement. Last year we clocked 539 driver volunteer hours! Volunteer drivers save us a tremendous amount of money each year and we appreciate their dedication to our student-athletes. Thank you! This year’s Alumni basketball and volleyball tournaments have been set for April 6-7, 2018. Get your teams ready for a fun-filled weekend of friendly competition! More details to come, but get this date on your calendar! The booster club is currently seeking a new chairperson for the Sports Ad book. If interested, please contact MABC president Mike Waldusky. The MACS Student Ambassador activities have been off to a slow start, (no fault of theirs!) with an eagerness to get serving. The ambassador leaders have been meeting and making plans for several projects for the year. One of them is a continuation of last spring’s Shine Blue For The Badge police appreciation project. On Monday, October 23, the students lead the convocation with the bible verse John 15:13, “there is no greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for a friend” referring to the commitment of the law enforcement community. Four members of the Chippewa Falls Police Department with differing jobs within the department shared some of their most challenging parts of their job, from telling someone their loved one passed away, to working with victims of sensitive crimes, to arresting juveniles. They recognize that 90% of the crime is committed by less than 10% of the population. When the national media began showing images of protests against their profession, they wondered if that is how the Chippewa Falls community felt about them. They have been especially thankful for the blue lights shining around the area. They admit that some days and nights are really tough. There have been times when they have felt despair, but when they see a blue light indicating that there are good people in this community who care about them, and appreciate their work, they felt encouraged and supported. You can help spread this support by shining your blue light all year long, especially with the shorter days of daylight coming. The students took home order forms to share with their family, their neighbors, and relatives. Let’s all “shine blue for the badge!!!” Light bulbs are also sold out of the McDonell office. If you have any questions, feel free to call the school. Like us on Facebook: Shine Blue For The Badge #sbftb

UPCOMING EVENTS St. Charles and Holy Ghost Schools – November 2017

Students in Mrs. Yohnk’s first grade science class put their scientific skills to the test. Working with a partner, they collaborated and used their five senses to try to identify four white mystery powders. After recording the data of what they saw with the magnifying glass (sense of sight), listened to the sound each powder made when shaking the canister (sense of hearing), felt the powder between their fingers (sense of touch), took a gentle sniff (sense of smell), and sampled a tiny amount (sense of taste), the partners came up with a conclusion from a list of eight possibilities. This pair of first grade scientists work together to identify the white “mystery powder” (left).

Fr. Jesse Burish (above) shows students a drawing of the San Damiano cross before which St. Francis of Assisi was praying when he heard the Lord’s call to rebuild His church. This year the pastors from our three city parishes will rotate visits at St. Charles and Holy Ghost Schools. On October 4th, Fr. Jesse Burish from Notre Dame enjoyed lunch with a group of kindergartners and then stopped by each class to talk about St. Francis of Assisi. It was a doubly special day – October 4th is the Feast of St. Francis and also Fr. Burish’s birthday!

Everyone needs an escape plan

Fire Prevention Week was October 8th through the 14th. Area students in grades 1-5 were invited to enter the 54rd annual fire safety poster contest sponsored by the Chippewa Falls Fire and Emergency Services Department. In a fire, seconds count. Seconds can make the difference between life and death. Studies show that only 1/3 of homes have an escape plan in place. That’s why this year’s fire safety theme was “Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out”. Winners at St. Charles and Holy Ghost include:

Grade 1:

Callan Johnson, 1st Place Peter Wollmer, 2nd Place Charlie Lambert, 3rd Place

Grade 2:

Megan Busse, 1st Place

Grade 4:

Chloe Flanagan, 4th Place

Congratulations!

Starlab lands at Holy Ghost School

On October 4th, Holy Ghost students visited Starlab, the portable CESA 10 planetarium. The Starlab dome was set up in the gym and astronomy lessons were taught by Joan Neumann, CESA 10’s Starlab consultant. Each grade level explored different stars and constellations in the Milky Way Galaxy. The classes focused on these three topics: Native American Sky Stories (Grade 3), Earth / Latitude and Longitude (Grade 4) and The Sky Tonight (Grade 5). Starlab is a wonderful educational experience that our students look forward to every year!

October 13, 2017 was the 100th anniversary of “the Miracle of the Sun”, the final vision granted by Our Lady of Fatima in Portugal. This miracle confirmed to countless witnesses the message that Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta (the children Mary appeared to) had shared from Mary – repentance, conversion, praying the rosary, and devotion to her Immaculate Heart. To celebrate this event, Holy Ghost Church and School held a special Mass, Procession, Benediction and Adoration.

Fr. Justin Kizewski practices the steps leading up to the Consecration with three fourth graders (above).

Every year Holy Ghost fourth graders have the chance to train as altar servers. Once trained, they can serve at school Masses or on weekends at their own parishes.

Four heads are better than one! A third grade team check their iPad and note their observations (above).

Third graders recently used iPads to research in-depth a specific category of animals. Each group then created an animal classification poster and presented it to the class.

First graders help each other assemble Creation mobiles, matching pictures with the Bible verse (right).

“And God saw all the things he had made, and they were very good.” ~ Genesis 2:31

St. Charles Spanish teacher Mrs. Anita Wahl uses song, movement and props to teach K-2 students the names of colors, animals, weather, and other conversational Spanish words. Here, first graders are moving the requested animals around the toy farm (right).

St. Charles students learn both inside and outside the classroom

Kindergarteners (above) visit with some friendly calves during their trip to the Johnson farm on October 19th.

Thank you to the parents who either participated in a small group session at a parish or joined the webinar on-line. The feedback from the attendees was very positive! In fact, one parent said this is such great information all parents should hear it. We agree! Each month, the Teaching the Way of Love session highlights a unique topic that will help any parent do a better job. The October topic was authority and here are the top three points from that session.

• Parents, remember you aren’t raising a child. You are raising an adult. Begin with the end in mind. What do you want for your child as an adult?

• Parents need to exercise true authority which is the ability to lead your children to what is right so that they can experience and embrace the goodness that comes from God. Two actions – always responding in love and always demanding goodness - are the keys to true authority.

• the end result of authority is not about making a parent’s life easier or to have quiet, unobtrusive children who don’t bother you. Rather, the natural outcome of authority is nurturing goodness within their children’s heart.

November’s topic will focus on Becoming a Family. Becoming a family isn't difficult. But, becoming a great family takes effort. During the session you will learn what four tasks or traits great families have in common. We hope you will join us and gain important insights into creating a joyful family life. Here are the dates and locations of the sessions.
