Giving Thanks

November is a time for family and for giving thanks. We here at Louise’s have so much to be thankful for. We have had a great year, a fabulous 7th annual Open House, great new clubs and lots of fabulous customers. We appreciate your patronage and we consider each and every customer a friend and a member of our Louise’s family.

10 for 10 Also, as a way to give back, Louise’s is bringing back our 10 for 10 in November. For every 10 cans of food brought in, each customer will receive a $10 Louise’s Buck. This is a way for all of us to help the Columbus community. Louise’s will match all the food donated so the Food Pantry will receive double what our customers donate.

Thinking of the Holidays Soon Christmas will be upon us and everyone will be shopping for gifts and preparing for holiday celebrations. Louise’s gift certificates make great gifts; the recipient can choose what they would like to purchase, and who wouldn’t like that? While you are at it, don’t forget to let your family and friends know that you would like a Louise’s gift certificate for yourself. Beginning and Ending Threads Securely There is nothing more frustrating than when a thread comes loose and drifts to the front of a canvas or loosens up enough to destroy the tension of our stitch. In this article, we cover some of the knots and stitches used to begin and end threads securely. Each is useful in a different way. For help in visualizing the stitches/knots, check out the great graphic Diane has created of how to do them. Inline Waste Knots – Inline waste knots are commonly used when there are enough stitches to cover the thead and secure it on the back. The knot is placed on the top of the canvas in the direction you will be stitching. The thread is covered on the back as you stitch. When you reach the knot, you can cut it away. (It helps to put a little tension on the knot when cutting – the thread will then shrink back and be covered more thoroughly after cutting.) Away Waste Knots – Away waste knots can be used when working an open thread pattern or when the line of stitches is not going to be large enough to secure the thread. Leave a long enough tail to cut and rethread through the needle after stitching to work the thread under the stitches on the back of the canvas. If there aren’t going to be enough stitches to cover the thread or it will show through open areas, the away waste knot can be started outside the design area and left there to be secured by the finishing. Pin Stitch – A Pin stitch hides under stitches in the design area and is a great choice for isolated stitches. It can also be used to secure a thread outside the design edge either when beginning or ending a thread. In this stitch, you come up in one hole (1), down in the hole immediately to the left (2), come up two holes to the right (3) and down in the first hole (4). To really secure the thread it helps to catch the thread as it goes from 2 to 3 when going back down in 4. Then, you stitch right over the pin stitch. The stitch becomes invisible under your stitching. L Stitch – The L Stitch is used the same way as a Pin stitch. Instead of going in a straight line, the stitch is done in the shape of an L. T Stitch – The T Stitch is a combination of the pin and L stitches. It really secures the thread and is appropriate for all threads, including those that are slippery. Bargello Tuck – The Bargello Tuck is useful in ending a thread when your stitches are long or the thread you are using is slippery and may not stay buried by just weaving the thread under previously stitched threads. After weaving your ending thread under several stitches, come up at the end, go over one stitch and then weave under your threads in the opposite direction.

November Calendar Stitch In - Our next monthly Stitch In will be Saturday, November 12, 2016 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. No instruction or fees – just a fun time with other great stitchers. Share your ideas and learn from others. Refreshments are provided. Closures – We will be closed Thursday, November 24 through Sunday, November 27 for the Thanksgiving holiday. We reopen Monday, November 28 at the regular time. But don’t miss our Black Friday weekend website sale. Threads, Stitches and More - every Monday, 1:00 to 4:00 pm - an informal canvas embellishment class. Classes are $11 for two hours and $15 for three hours. Sip and Stitch – every Tuesday, 7:00 to 9:00 pm - an informal canvas embellishment class, with wine. Classes are $11. There will be no class Tuesday, November 22 and the store will close at 4:00 pm that day. Thursdays with Karen - every Thursday, 1:00 to 4:00 pm - an informal canvas embellishment class. Classes are $11 for two hours and $15 for three hours. Class cancelled Thursday, Nov. 24 for the holiday Private Classes – One-on-one sessions are also available. These sessions are $25/hour and require advance arrangements.
