United Way of York County


From school readiness to economic stability to improved health and well-being, the United Way of York County identifies needs in our community, develops results-focused programs and connects people with programs that make a difference.

The Tocqueville Society plays a critical role in raising the financial resources that support the essential work of the United Way of York County. Each year, this group of generous philanthropists answers the call to serve our community; 2016 was no exception. The nearly 100-member Tocqueville Society contributed $60,000 more than the previous year, and we welcomed five new members. This would not have been possible without the strong leadership of 2016 Chair Allison Siegelman, the Tocqueville Cabinet and Ambassadors. We thank you!

The theme for the 2017 campaign is, “United for a Strong Community.” We hope this serves both as a rallying cry and a reminder to encourage the most fortunate in our communities that a contribution to the campaign is an investment that will pay large dividends in the vitality of the areas we’re proud to call home.

As many of us who also give our time and talent through hands-on work with the United Way certainly recognize, these are important programs and services that make a real difference in the quality of life for our most vulnerable residents and strengthen our communities overall.

We thank all Tocqueville members for their generous financial support and the volunteer Cabinet members for their essential leadership and oversight of the Society. We’re proud to work with all of you to make great things happen in York County.

On behalf of the United Way Leadership Giving Council, I want to thank the members of the First Capital Club for your continued support of the United Way and our partner agencies. The First Capital Club has grown to 1,000 members raising in excess of $1.5 million dollars this past year. We are blessed to live in such a caring community, a community of individuals willing to give their time, talent and treasure to help friends and strangers in a time of need.

We give because we know 1 in 3 residents of York County benefit from United Way funded programs. We give to the Community Fund because we know it is the best way that we can address the issues that affect us all. We give because we know community volunteers work hard to ensure that only the programs that demonstrate measurable impact on people’s lives are trusted with United Way dollars. We give because we know that the United Way works collaboratively with numerous organizations to engage the community in addressing the complex issues facing York County. We give because we know our gift will help ensure York County children enter kindergarten ready to learn, York County families will have access to healthcare and assistance meeting their family’s basic needs, and older adults will receive the help they need to continue to lead independent lives.

As Women United (formerly Women Living United) approaches our 5th year, it is exciting to look back at how far we’ve come since the Inaugural Membership Meeting in the auditorium of the York Jewish Community Center in 2013. Over 300 strong, we continue to be an integral part of United Way of York County’s mission to build a stronger, caring community as we strive to fulfill our commitment to affect positive change as philanthropists, role models, mentors, and leaders.

2016 has been a great year of growth and change. Women Living United announced a rebranding to Women United. By embracing the new brand, we joined a global force of over 70,000 women, bound to each other, to United Way’s mission, and to the communities we call home. Our membership grew by over 25%, which helped to increase our financial impact as philanthropists. Women United members gave $401,679 -- a 19% increase over last year.

In 2016, Women United members also invested their time and talents as mentors, leaders, and role models. Women United members continued their work with York College and the York County Community Opportunity Scholarship Program (YCCOSP), mentoring the young women of YCCOSP on professional skills, such as resume preparation and interviewing skills. Women United professionals participated in Penn State York's Career Networking Event, a part of the campus' annual Career Week. During the event, the women shared their experiences and professional expertise with Penn State York students eager to begin their own careers. In addition, the Volunteer Development Committee organized volunteer opportunities for members, including preparing personal care kits for ACCESS York, a domestic violence shelter, and a project with Crispus Attucks during United Way’s Day of Action.

Women leaders in our community continued to inspire members and guests during the Interviews with Inspiring Women breakfast series - featuring Anne Acker of YWCA Hanover; Sally Dixon, CEO of Memorial Hospital; Anne Druck, President of the York County Convention and Visitors Bureau, and 2016 Campaign Cabinet Chair; and Jane Sutton, Ph.D., Professor of Communication Arts and Sciences, Penn State York. The Annual Membership Event presented four published local authors - Dr. Marian Condon, Vicki Friedman, Laura Rudacille, and Demi Stevens -- whose experiences in and around York have shaped their lives and work.

As Chair, it has been a tremendous honor to lead this passionate group of women who continue to demonstrate, through investments of time, talent, and financial generosity, what it means to LIVE UNITED. 2016 was a great success, and I have no doubt with the guidance of incoming Chair Christi Brown, 2017 will be no different.

A Message From the Emerging Leaders Society Chair

Wow! It has been a great year for the Emerging Leaders Society and it is a pleasure to be the Chair. Our 312 members contributed $202,938 to the United Way of York County campaign, which averages $650 per member. Thank you for your investment to building a stronger, caring community. ELS holds events through the year in the categories of professional development, volunteerism, education, and networking. Books and Brews continues to grow each year as we donate to the United Way Reading Ready Corners. This year we provided more access to community leaders through our CEO Breakfast and Annual Reception. And our holiday giving project supported the Children’s Home of York. Thank you to our sponsors that make the events possible: C.S. Davison, Inc., Glatfelter Insurance Group, OSS Health, WellSpan Health, WOLF, RKL LLP, York Traditions Bank, and The York Water Company. The commitment of ELS members impresses me. At each event we make an offer to get involved, and with each request we have engaged more emerging leaders. ELS members now serve on the United Way board, the United Way Campaign Cabinet, on the annual Allocations Panels, and continue to get more and more involved. Thank you to the Steering Committee and all members who believe in the mission.

Without a doubt, the proudest moment as ELS chair came on May 23, 2017 as I stood in front of 200 emerging leaders at the first annual Building Future Leaders of York County conference. The idea started with Bob Woods in January 2016. Eight organizations came together to plan this event; ELS members made up half of the committee. #BFLYC17 had a huge impact on York County. Thank you for the opportunity to lead. I look forward to another year to serve.

Bell Family Shelter is the only shelter in York that provides housing for men, women, and children -- allowing families to remain together during their time of crisis. It costs $1,560 to run the shelter every day. A $10,000 Tocqueville gift can keep the doors open for a full week.

FIRST CAPITAL CLUBA $1,000 First Capital Club gift provides 4 low-income girls with the opportunity to participate in the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. This program engages girls with activities that will boost their confidence and teach them to work together -- helping to create strong future leaders for our community.

A gift of $500 covers the cost of helping a family to replace clothes, food and other essentials after losing everything in a home fire through the American Red CrossEmergency Services program.

Women United

A gift of $250 covers the cost to provide CPR & Pediatric First Aid training and certification for five teachers in YWCA Hanover’s Early Learning Center.
