Special Announcement—Lilly GIFT VI Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow

Dear Friends,

Lilly Endowment announced another initiative for Indiana Community Foundations. With the Lilly Gift VI program, the Noble County Community Foundation will receive a dollar for dollar match for contributions to our Community Impact Fund and/or the NCCF Operating Endowment Fund. That’s right a 100% return on your gifts. The match is on a first given, first matched basis.

The matching $1 for $1 opportunities are for all unrestricted funds, including our Community Impact Fund plus the NCCF Operating Endowment Fund.

What is the Community Impact Fund?

This fund was created for the purpose of awarding grants to meet the ever changing needs within our county. We know that the needs of today will be much different than those needs perhaps in five or ten years from now. The Community Impact Fund awards grants in the areas of arts and culture, education, civic affairs, health, human services, and environment.

Why is the NCCF Operating Endowment Fund Vital?

Our board of directors plan for the future, which also includes a plan for sustainability and growth of the foundation to assure supporting the administration, financial management, and continued development of professional staff.

“The Community Impact Fund continues to provide for community needs, both now and in the future. With the Lilly Gift VI providing matching dollars, the

Foundation, funded by people past and present – who care deeply about their community. We love having an opportunity to participate in the Foundation’s

Giving for Tomorrow and hope others will do the same.”

Dr. Robert and Lura Stone

Don’t hesitate to contact us to discover the many ways you can benefit from helping us further our mission. Sincerely,

Linda Linda Speakman-Yerick, Executive Director

We are celebrating wonderful communities with donors who care and nonprofits that continue to make an impact for improving the quality of life. It’s a position where the joy of giving and the honor of receiving are witnessed with regularity---and it never grows old. We are truly blessed. Helping to Bridge the Generational Gaps—Senior Citizen’s Prom

Since 2006, P.U.L.S.E. of Noble County members have been working toward bridging the generational gap. To address this need, P.U.L.S.E. organized a Senior Citizen prom that would allow seniors and teenagers to talk, have fun, and learn from each other. In April of this year, P.U.L.S.E. held their annual Senior Citizen Prom. Guests were welcomed by P.U.L.S.E. president Brook Smith and enjoyed “A Night in Paris” along with a meal complete with French desserts and some door prizes. P.U.L.S.E. of Noble County is directed by the Noble County Community Foundation, Inc. as a youth empowered philanthropy group. Five high school students from Central Noble, East Noble, West Noble and homeschooled students make up the group’s membership who conduct monthly community service projects and review and award grants throughout the county. For more information about P.U.L.S.E. of Noble County or to apply for a grant, visit www.NobleCountyCF.org and click on the “Grants” tab or call the community foundation at 260.894.3335.

Benjamin H. Murray Memorial Scholarship Fund Tragedy robs us of young man’s megawatt smile Reprinted with permission from Dave Kurtz/KPC Media Group This story originally appeared in the News Sun on 10-4-2014 Revised The light Ben Murray spread across northeast Indiana was snuffed out in shocking fashion in July, when a head-on crash caused brain injuries that took his life a week later. Murray, 20, of Wawaka, died July 23 in University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. “He would take a negative situation and make it positive literally just by smiling,” said Vince Beasley, assistant principal at Wawasee High School. Former head coach of East Noble High school’s basketball team, Beasley coached Murray for three years. “He was a joy to coach,” Beasley said. “He was the first to practice and last to leave … I can guarantee you he was as hard-working a player as we ever had … Not one time ever do I remem-ber Ben complaining about anything.” In the halls at high school, Beasley said, “Kids always wanted to be around Ben, and there was a reason for that, because he was fun to be around.” Murray’s talents didn't stop with basketball. He also played football and ran cross country at East Noble, and one year on the school’s archery team, he placed fourth in the state and 23rd in the nation. He enjoyed hunting deer with a bow or rifle, and he spent plenty of time at Tri-State Archery. “He stood out because he was just totally, completely likable—just a good individual.” Murray was studying at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne toward his career goal of teaching math and coaching basketball, his mother said. He didn’t let his own struggles with dyslexia hold him back. “Everything he did, he worked hard for,” Elaine Murray said. “His big, glass-blue eyes and humongous, gorgeous smile would light up a room,” she said about her son, “but it was ultimately his spirit that people fell in love with.”

A New Legacy for Noble County Created Cecil C. and Bette I. Smith Scholarship Fund The Noble County Community Foundation, Inc. received a legacy gift late 2013 from the estate of Cecil C. Smith and Bette I. Smith formerly of Kendallville, Indiana. Cecil Smith earned his degree from Ball State University in 1939 and married Bette Kizer Smith in 1940, also a graduate of Ball State University. Cecil taught school in Fort Recovery, Ohio and then taught business classes at Rome City High School, all before starting his own public accounting business in Kendallville. His wife, Bette, also taught school in the area of health and physical education for 20 years beginning at Kendallville High School in 1957. Cecil and Bette lived on a farm north of Kendallville since 1954. Cecil passed in February of 1995 and Bette passed away in December of 2009. Mr. and Mrs. Smith had a daughter Sandra Smith Fields of Oregon who passed away in 2013. The legacy bestowed upon the community foundation is an endowed named scholarship fund to benefit a graduating senior/s from East Noble School Corporation possibly beginning next year. It is always a blessed day when we receive a phone call from a local attorney, such as Daniel Diggins, Atty., sharing the terrific news of a substantial gift, over $500,000 benefiting our upcoming graduates at East Noble.

Many have found that a fitting way to remember a special someone is through a gift in memory of that person. During times of great sorrow we look for ways to honor the memory of those who are dear to us, and it becomes very important that the memorial carries their name. Scholarship funds are one of the most popular choices for families wishing to remember their loved ones. The thought that future generations will benefit in their memory can bring great comfort.

The Noble County Community Foundation is pleased to announce the creation of a Memorial Scholarship Fund. Through a combination of single or multiple gifts this fund will enable families and friends to memorialize their loved ones forever. Each year the names of those memorialized will be listed as part of this scholarship. Annual scholarships of a minimum of $1,000 will be awarded, and recipients will be selected from among those who apply for Noble County Community Foundation scholarships. To have the name of your loved one included on our Memorial Scholarship please contact the community foundation at 260.894.3335 or [email protected]
