QF Philippines request QANTAS has formally applied tothe International Air ServicesCommission for 180 seats perweek of capacity on thePhilippines route, to support thenew Jetstar flights from Darwin toManila (TD Wed). AirAsia X poised for Sydney NO formal announcement hasbeen made yet, but it appearsthat Malaysian low-cost long haulcarrier is set to launch its firstflights between Kuala Lumpurand Sydney in the coming months. AirAsia ceo and founder TonyFernandes has been activelytouting the down under expansionvia Twitter, backing a reportwhich claims the first Sydneyflight will operate on 01 Apr, withtickets to go on sale next week. The Malaysian Star speculatesthat Malaysia Airlines - in whichAirAsia now has a significant stake- may cut its current double dailyflights to a daily operation tomake way for AirAsia X. Last night AirAsia X announceda major “realignment” of itsroutes, with the withdrawal offlights to Europe and India by theend of Mar (TD breaking news). AirAsia X ceo Azran Osman-Ranisaid the move - downplayed justa few weeks ago (TD 22 Dec) -would see the carrier “focus onits core markets” with the pulloutsa result of increasing costs. The carrier launched services toIndia in 2010 but “structuralissues in the Indian aviationmarket have made it difficult tooperate economically viableflights,” with Osman-Rani citinghigh airport and handling costsand a recently-approved 280%hike in airport fees from Apr. London Gatwick flights startedin Mar 2009 when oil prices were

under US$40 per barrel - arounda third of their current level - andAirAsia X is also impacted by theUK government’s exorbitant AirPassenger Duty which willincrease to £92 per departingeconomy passenger from 01 Apr. AirAsia X’s Paris Orly servicesare affected by the new ETS taxand economic conditions, and thecarrier said it was “economicallyimpossible” to sustain theEuropean operations despite loadfactors of over 80% during 2011. “Attempts to increase fares toreflect the higher operating costrecently have shown the priceelasticity of travel, with demandfalling down adversely,” he said. Passengers affected by thepullouts will be offered a fullrefund, a reroute to anotherAirAsia X destination or a move toan alternative carrier. Osman-Rani said AirAsia X willnow focus on its core markets ofAustralasia, China, Taiwan, Japanand Korea, with announcementsof future expansion plansincluding higher frequencies onexisting routes as well as newdestinations to be made soon.

Stamford projects THE owner of the Sir StamfordHotel in Circular Quay, Sydneyand the North Ryde GrandStamford has submitted plans formajor redevelopments of bothsites as residential projects. Under the plan the city hotelwould be replaced by a 25-levelbuilding including 96 apartments,while the large North Ryde sitecould become a $175mdevelopment including 10 towersof up to 21 storeys each, housingmore than 620 apartments. However Stamford says thereare no immediate plans toredevelop either hotel, but ratherthe approvals are being sought tokeep the company’s options open. Director Anthony Rice is quotedin today’s Financial Review sayingboth hotels were performing well.

Assist tourism, not cars - TTF THE ceo of lobby group TTFAustralia, John Lee, has slammedthe government’s assistanceprograms for the car industry,saying the money would be muchbetter spent on tourism. In a statement issued after therelease of Australia’s Nov arrivalsand departures figures (TD yest)Lee said that the local tourismindustry “can only dream of thegovernment support beingafforded to the country’sautomotive sector, despite its fargreater contribution to thenation’s economy.” He contrasted the directemployment of over 510,000Australians in tourism with thecar industry’s 60,000, as well asthe tourism export figure of$23.7b a year vs just $3.6b for the

automotive industry.
