INDIAN ACADEMY OF DIABETESANNUAL MEETING 2017AnnuAl Meeting 2018

Dear friends,

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to Mumbai- the capital of Maharashtra and heartbeat of India for a rich scientific program. This program has been set up by Indian clinicians with medical experts from the USA,

and aims to enrich your wisdom and clinical sixth sense in all areas of diabetes therapy, research and clinical diabetes. Apart from the latest cutting edge science and path breaking discoveries, Indian work in each therapy area will be shared in some unique formats. A special focus is our “ Made in India” lectures where discoveries and the use of medicine of Indian Innovations will be presented.

This is the 17th Edition of the International Symposium of Diabetes. This meeting originally started 17 years ago as the Mayo Clinic Meeting in Kochi by Prof Robert Rizza and Prof K Sreekumarnan Nair - as a capacity building program to update Indian physicians on diabetes. The Indian Academy of Diabetes, The Association of Physicians of India and Diabetic Association of India are the academic partners of our current meeting. Like every year, we have applied for Medical Council awarded 4 credit points and all participants are expected to fill the CME Evaluation forms at the end of the meeting. WIDF will also be announcing awards for outstanding researchers and innovators. The Indian Academy of Diabetes is giving out awards for “Life time Achievement”, “Unique Indian Innovations”, “Community service”, “Education” and “Rising star”. The idea of these awards is to generate more Indian evidence, promote younger generations and better the care of diabetes in India.

This year, the WIDF GLOBAL Oration is by Prof Juleen Zierath, President EASD from Sweden who will speak on “The role of diet and exercise in the transgenerational epigenetic landscape of Type 2 Diabetes”. The WIDF AWARD Oration is by Dr. Nikhil Tandon, New Delhi who will deliver the talk “Nutrition and diabetes in India: Learning from CARRS Surveillance Study”. The Prestigious S S Ajgaokar Oration is by Dr. Ketan Dhatariah, UK on “Management of Diabetic Keto-acidosis and hyperosmolar state”, the MMS Ahuja Oration will be by Dr Vijay Panikar on “When insulin is not an option in Type 2 diabetes”. Prof Anil Bhoraskar will speak on “Individualised diabetes care – KISS : Keep it Simple and Safe” in the RV Sathe Oration. The prestigious BS Raheja Memorial Oration will be delivered by Dr. Nihal Thomas from Vellore on “Diabetes in India: the lean, the gene, what does it mean: Vellore Visions”.

We have a special Foot Workshop where in The state of the art lecture on “Charcot Foot” will be delivered by Dr. Ketan Dhatariya from UK. As our Indian prime minister is promoting Yoga, a special session on Stress management and Yoga will be conducted by Indian and US experts.

We are fortunate to have Prof Juleen Zierath, President EASD from Sweden as the Chief Guest of this scientific meeting.

We are all here with a common goal and common mission- to make lives of our Diabetics better. We all are committed to make India the Diabetes capital of the World. My prevention mantra for Diabetes prevention is “Eat Less, Eat Slowly, Eat on Time, Eat Right, Walk More, Sleep well & on time and Smile”. Happy Learning.

Warm Welcome
