Since we kicked off in 2000 as The Australian Giving Centre, GiveNow has gone from strength to strength, with more than 2800 community organisations and more than 146,000 donors from across the world choosing to use GiveNow as their preferred online donations platform.

Why is this? Apart from being the oldest (and coolest) kids on the block, we are still the only commission-free platform in Australia, meaning more of your donation goes to the cause you believe in, and organisations don’t lose much-needed funding to fees and admin costs.

We’re doing good and because we’re doing well so is the community. The 2013/14 financial year was a re-cord year for giving through GiveNow. $8,555,119.96 was donated to causes across Australia, compared with $7,696,546.59 the previous year.

Why this leap in giving? We can’t be certain but based on where donations were directed, we have a suspicion that at least part of the increase in giving was a direct response to the recent federal budget. Organisations received record donations during June were primarily those with causes most negatively affected by the budget: asylum seekers, protectors of the environment, disadvantaged job seekers.

Donors rallied to support those organisations from which the government had withdrawn support.

Now that’s the community in action! When a government says that times are tough and we ALL have to tighten our belts and we all have to sacrifice, how does the community respond? By digging deeper and helping the disadvantaged, the disenfranchised, the deprived. We are proud that GiveNow offers people the opportunity to make a stand and take action by supporting causes they really care about.

Throughout the year we saw evidence of growing generosity. Every month saw an increase in giving, none more so than June, the busiest time for giving (EOFY tends to bring out our generosity…) which saw a whopping $2,823,171 donated, an increase of $475,070 from 12/13.

More interesting facts:

• Interestingly the average amount donated dropped from $114.19 to $104.53, but we don’t see this as a bad thing – an overall increase in the number of donations counters the drop in the amount.

• The biggest single donation was $30,000.

• 81,842 donations were made, 14,441 more than last year and a significant increase from the 61 donations made in our first year of operation!

• Savings to not-for-profits, and dollars donated by Our Community Foundation - $769,961.

At the end of June 2014, 2922 individual appeals were listed on GiveNow covering the gamut from animals to homelessness to youth. The categories that received the most financial support were International, Environment and Heritage, Health and Wellbeing, and the ever mysterious Unknown category for those causes which span a number of categories, or those that don’t quite know where they fit! However this doesn’t reflect those categories that receive a lot of support in terms of number of donations and donors. A great example is Animal Welfare, which may not get the big dollars, but certainly received a lot of donations (10,056) and has great donor support (2997).

How many causes do donors support?

While the majority of donors – 24,953 – support a single cause, another 4000 support up to 12 causes. Some donors share the love even more broadly, with one GiveNow donor donating to 146 causes! We don’t mind if you give to a single cause or 1000 causes, as long as you’re giving to a cause you care about and believe in.

2014/15 will be a year of change and even more progress for GiveNow. As we are a free service, with funding provided by Our Community as part of its giving back program, we stage our technology development to ensure maximum impact for the money we spend. We are very excited to announce that we’ll be implementing a log-on for organisations, meaning you can access donation information in real time, and update your cause information yourself. This will make the process easier for all groups registered with us and also take away a substantial administration burden for our staff.

We also have a few other technological improvements up our sleeves, but we’ll tell you about those closer to the date.

Huge thanks to all the donors who supported all the causes of all the groups who choose to list with GiveNow. We can make a difference to our
