A MESSAGE FROM FR. TIM

2

There it is again, the gospel to love. What is he saying to us now? As adult Catholic and Christians do we

not have the responsibility to ponder what we hear? The tendency is to

dismiss it because we have heard it so often. We could probably recite the gospel by heart. Is God trying

to drive a point home or does he have something to make us aware of? Does he not say I am the way, the

truth and the life? In the preface to one of the Eucharistic

prayers it says; “He has spoken your word to us, called us to follow him. He is the way that leads us to you,

the truth that sets us free, the life the fills us with gladness. Through your Son you gather men and women

whom you made for the glory of your name into one family, redeemed by the Blood of the his Cross and

signed with the seal of the Spirit.”

Let’s take the command to love and listen to it in relationship to the first reading from Exodus. “You shall not

molest or oppress the aliens for you were once aliens…You shall not wrong any widow or orphan….If you

lend money to one of your poor neighbors…..you shall not act like an extortioner toward him….. If he cries

out to me, I will hear him; for I am

compassionate.”

God is compassionate and we certainly want to be the recipient of God’s compassion. God demands that

we treat one another as we want to be treated. When we pray Our Father, do we realize what we are

saying? “Our” means not the select few, or the chosen, but all

people.

Last week we had the gospel of “Give to Caesars what is Caesars and to God what is God’s.” That quote

has been used to separate church and state. Yet are some of the issues before the American people today

political or moral? Do we not have the responsibility to ponder God’s word and to enflesh what he com-

mands? Jesus lived his human life as an integrated person. His belief in the Father and his awareness of the

Father’s teachings went with him in all aspects of his life. Remember the story of the Syrophonecian woman

how he refused to heal her daughter because she was not Jewish. Yet in his pondering what she said he

heard it with the ears of the Father and as a result he healed the daughter. Think of the woman at the well.

He approached her for a drink, against the custom of the time. He knew her life but he looked at her with

compassion. So the challenge before us is not to dismiss his word but to ponder it and discern what he is call-

ing us to and embrace it. If we really believe he is the way the truth and the life then it is not so much a

challenge but an invitation into his kingdom.

Fr. Tim

Make your New Year’s Eve extra special by having your Marriage blessed in the presence of God.

A Gentle Reminder As this unprecedented time goes, we

may be apt to forget some of the safety precautions that we needed to put in place so that we could resume live

Masses. When you make a reservation, you are agreeing to:

Wear a mask at all times when in the church.

Bring hand sanitizer with you. Follow the usher to your assigned seat and remain in that seat at all times until

Mass is finished Leave the church immediately after

receiving Holy Communion by the door on the side of the church where you

were sitting.

We ask every one to understand that these commitments are to ensure the

safety of both priests and parishioners during this difficult time.

Blessings, Fr. Tim

Weekday Mass Intentions will now be celebrated on the weekend Masses except those on Wed & Fri.

If you have requested a Mass intention for someone during the week, we will be combining their name with the weekend Mass names until we are able to celebrate daily Masses at both churches.

From the Desk of Fr. Tim:

The question was raised the other day about other churches not asking those who wish to attend Mass to register before hand. I have been told that other parishes are not as strict as the Saugus Catholic Collaborative is. The question has been posed: are we not all part of the same diocese and subject to the same policies? My answer to that is, I cannot speak for other parishes. I can say the policies are different for those parishes who are in the red zone. As you well know, Saugus has been in and out of the red zone. The reason we ask people to register is to get names and phone numbers so that if someone who is at one of the liturgies comes down with the virus we are equipped to contact others who were at the same service. I believe this is a policy of the State, Church and Local Board of Health. We certainly want to be able to offer opportunities for those who feel able to attend Mass but we also want to assure their safety as much as we can.

Fr. Tim
