Give. Connect. Help.

The way in which companies work with charitable organizations has changed dramatically over the past decade.  In order to remain relevant to corporations and employee donors, Community Health Charities has focused on developing a strategy that can leverage the strength of the trusted health charities in its membership. This work has included identifying new approaches that can positively impact the lives of our donors, and the bottom lines of our corporate partners, in areas such as health and wellness, community involvement, and employee engagement.

Through broad organizational and customer input, Community Health Charities has worked over the past year to better package and present how it can assist donors and corporations in these areas. One key component of this new approach is the Engagement 365 program. Modularized in its approach, the program offers numerous solutions that make giving and connecting to the credible resources and support programs of our trusted members simple and effective for any workplace.  The modules included in the Engagement 365 program are Health Matters at Work®, Volunteer Matters 365® and Giving Matters 365.

Community Health Charities is no longer just a workplace giving organization. While the primary goal of Community Health Charities will always be to raise more money for its member charities, it has become increasing important to demonstrate to employers how we can work together to amplify their efforts in creating a healthy workplace culture. To capture the essence of these changes, we have refreshed our brand in order to better connect with corporations and donors.

The updated Community Health Charities brand represents these key changes within our own organization, as well as the changing landscape of philanthropy. Employees and employers expect conversations and opportunities to interact with Community Health Charities and its members. Our new tagline, Give. Connect. Help - encourages this type of engagement.

As participation and dollars pledged through the Combined Federal Campaign continue to decline, these initiatives to increase the dollars we raise in private sector companies becomes more critical. The collective efforts of Community Health Charities of America and its network of affiliate offices, in both the public and private sectors, translated to more than $67 million pledged to our member health charities this past year. The donor directed funds that our member charities receive from Community Health Charities of America are used to fund important community education programs and services, medical research, and to protect the rights of those confronting a health issue that need a voice.

This year’s success comes from the generous giving of time and money by many—the American workforce, corporate leaders, dedicated Community Health Charities volunteer and staff leadership, and the wonderful member charities we have the pleasure to represent. On behalf of Community Health Charities of America, we thank all of you for sharing in our vision to improve the lives of people affected by a disability or chronic disease.

Combined Federal Campaign

For more than 50 years, Community Health Charities of America has had the honor of representing the nation’s most recognized health charities in the Combined Federal Campaign – the largest workplace giving campaign in the world. Since the CFC began, more than $1 billion has been raised for the health charities the Community Health Charities membership.

Nearly $35 million was pledged to Community Health Charities of America, its member health charities, and its state-level affiliates in the fall 2010 CFC. Donors pledged nearly $26 million to the 63 organizations that make up the national membership of Community Health Charities of America, and more than $9 million to Community Health Charities affiliates in partnership with their local member health charities. Most

activity associated with administering the 2010 CFC by Community Health Charities of America and its affiliates has been completed as of June 30, 2011.

Across the country, nearly 200 hundred campaigns are conducted as part of the CFC through community-based federal employee committees called Local Federal Coordinating Committees (LFCC). Each LFCC is responsible for the oversight of the local CFC. As such, the administrative fees associated with running a campaign vary by geographic area and size of the unique campaigns.

Operations of Community Health Charities of America are funded by corporate gifts and its member charities. Services provided to member charities include; assistance with preparation of applications, local and national representation, marketing, promotion and advertising, and processing and distribution of contributions from national and local private and public sectors workplace giving campaigns. Currently, the administrative costs by Community Health Charities of America, or any of its affiliates associated with the CFC, may not exceeded 16% (8% by Community Health Charities of America in representing national member charities and 8% by Community Health Charities affiliates in representing local member charities in the CFC).

All charities that participate in the CFC are reviewed annually for evidence that they are providing services on a local, state, national, or international level (depending on the type of application), as well as public and financial accountability. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) calculates and publishes participating charities’ ratio of revenue that is applied to administrative and fundraising expenses (AFR) in all campaign materials, and advises donors that an AFR in excess of 35% is considered high by many in the philanthropic community.
