GIS Plant Biotechnologies: an open and structured
public-private partnership
2011-2018
MiSSiOnS, Overview and OutlOOk
OutlookMobilising genetic leverage for multiperformance agriculture
In 2016 and 2017, GIS BV conducted a future-oriented reflection for a collaborative research programme on plant production. It consulted its members, both public and private, as well as other stakeholders in the field. This reflection resulted in the identification of 4 structural challenges and 3 key scientific themes to address them.
The members of GIS BV agree that the solutions that will enable us to overcome these challenges will emerge through a coordinated mobilisation of plant production components. In 2018, with this in mind, GIS BV joined forces with the biocontrol consortium and the GIS Grande Culture à Hautes Performances Economique et Environnementale (GC HP2E) to organise joint scientific events.
Scientific themes
1 Biodiversity and pre-breeding - Conserving, characterising and optimising genetic diversity: an essential tool for genetic progress
2 Mastering recombination - Modulation of a fundamental biological mechanism for more flexible and rapid varietal innovation
3 Genome editing - A technological breakthrough for varietal innovation
structural challenges
1 To drastically reduce the use of pesticides
2 To develop plant resources that are resilient to climate change and ecosystem services
3 To ensure that production meets the needs of the bioeconomy
4 To strengthen the nutritional quality of food

2011 2012 2013Chronology of GiS Bv activities
Stimulating the public-private partnershipBy involving both public and private partners in its scientific activities, GIS BV maintains a partnership culture within its community. It encourages future-oriented reflections in its field, and it shares these reflections with its two types of members and decision-making research bodies at the national and European level and at the level of its community and beyond.
It contributed to the Agriculture-Innovation 2025 report, commissioned by the Ministries of Agriculture and Research, to propose a shared long-term vision of tomorrow’s agriculture.
It conducted a future-oriented reflection integrating public and private visions and made proposals for a collaborative research programme on plant production.
It is a national technology platform alongside the European Technology Platform (ETP) Plants for the Future.
It participates in European discussions led by the Research & Innovation Group of the ESA (European Seed Association).
In 2018, it met with representatives of the GFPi (Gemeinschaft zur Förderung von Pflanzeninnovation) [German Federation for Plant Innovation] in order to discuss good partnership practices.
Scientific events GIS BV has many tools at its disposal to engage its scientific community: i) scientific workshops on current research issues that are at the forefront of science, ii) Thematic Event Committee (TEC) meetings composed of GIS BV member representatives and collaborative project leaders and iii) major biannual seminars to present the results obtained.GIS BV particularly relies on a portfolio of projects approved by its Strategic Committee. These projects aim to create technologies and skill sets and produce the knowledge necessary for innovative varietal development. They fall under one or more of the following 5 themes, which constitute the TECs:
• Biotic Interactions• Abiotic Interactions• Plant Improvement Methods• Biocomputing and Data Management• Product Quality and New Uses
Since its creation, GiS Bv has certified 107 projects: 9 from the Programme Investissements d’Avenir (PIA) [Investing in the Future] for a total budget of 229.4 million euros and 98 from national and European calls for projects (Plant-KBBE, ANR BioAdapt, Générique, etc.), representing a total research effort of 139.3 million euros.
