    Abstract

    RegardsGirls with Insurance is a magazine with a long history of murkystewardship. The earliest known tomes date back to 2003 and4. Little was told about the editorial crew at that time and little

    remains factual about them. While we'd love to know who to thank,we don't, and therefore the only course of action disproductionscan take is to rectify the situation by being moderately more clearin how it presently operates the magazine. This public document,a clarified statement of what we, the collective Associates whocompose Girls with Insurance, are here to do and certain mutually-beneficial by-laws we all agree to abide by.

    Intentions

    Girls with Insurance (henceforth referenced as GwI) is a bazaarof artistic endeavors. Its contents are determined by the collectiveand varying tastes of its partnered Associates. For the foreseeablefuture, GwI will not publish in any language aside from English.This is not a set-in-stone facet but a product of the small scaleoperation we have begun with. Regular operations are the stapleof any ordinary magazine, electronic or otherwise, and so one

    of our primary intentions is to remain fresh. Limits on contentlength, type, and so forth are to be determined by the individualsaccepting submissions. Whereas most magazines have but one

    place for submissions to be addressed, GwI has as many as it haseditors. An Associate may determine that he or she is only willingto run poetry and will thus be free to use her editorial powers insuch a way that she only runs poetry. Associates may additionally

    run their own contests, close themselves to submissions forreasonable periods of time, and offer compensation for specificmerit out of the to-be-developed GwI coffers. Not a magazine withstrict filters in the way of homogenizing submissions guidelines,GwI works as a conduit for the collective finesse of a livinggeneration.

    Specifically Speaking

    On Becoming An Associate

    We are always hiring. There is no paybeing an Associate at GwIis a volunteer position.

    There is no boss. Even disproductions, our owner andmaintainer of GwI, is not authorized to question the decision of anAssociate Editorso long as the rules herein were followed in themaking of any such decision. In the unfortunate and rare

    circumstance that a bad apple slips through the cracks, anAssociate may call a general discussion of the trouble-maker inquestion and a vote will be held as to what action should be taken.An accused party should always be offered at least one chance todefend itself since swift decisions are not the staple of a healthydemocracy. However, violation of our simple and agreeable by-laws is and shall remain grounds for temporary suspensionof Associate privileges.

    The application process involves a recorded phoneinterview to be posted on the site. In it the aspiring Associate willgive potential contributors some pointers and some views, as wellas solid reasoning for wanting to become an editor. For thepresent the application process will be more simplistic: all currentAssociates must reach consensus about the aspirant'sapplication. To apply you'll need a short letter with your phonenumber, name, and any relevant information you'd like theAssociates to consider in deciding for or against bringing you

    1. To: in a discerning manner, solicit, select, and rejectartistic articles for publication on GwI;2. Thoroughly edit all site content for grammar, spelling, andfactual mistakes;3.     By-Laws of an Associate Editor at Girls with Insurance

    1. All submissions received must be responded to. You will

    post your own expected response times, but you will not ignorea submission as an Associate of GwI. This anti-social behavior isproblematic in the literary world and if you are seeking to work withus then you are likely to already agree with our disgust at suchdisrespectful activities.2. All acceptances and rejections will be reported to the othereditors by the established means. This may be in the form of amailing list or just an address or by some other means, but it willbe done. This will help to avoid breaking By-Law 3.3. No person will be published more than once in a singlemonth at GwI. Thus if a writer submits a different piece to everyAssociate, only one may be accepted. Doesn't matter if it's WilliamChaucer himself.4. No Associate will self-publish herself more than once pertwo-month period. Blogs and other means are available for this.GwI is not your blog.5. No Associate will demand or accept a reading fee. If such a

    time comes that a Reading Fee appears feasible (it won't), it willbe done differently than normal operations.6. No Associate will publish more than ten total works in asingle week. Flooding GwI with one's preferences is somethingthat could make you seem problematic. Have respect for the othervoices in this cacophony.7. Unless and until a consensus has been reached by theAssociates at Large that such a statement is representative of

    their collective feelings, an Associate, when speaking of GwI,will speak on behalf of herself, not the larger entity of GwI ordisproductions (unless he is so empowered by other obligations).8. Associates are expected to work in an environment free ofleverage and personal bickering. Associates are volunteers. Thus,if an associate feels that GwI is no longer a good fit for her, theAssociate will simply tender resignation, rather than threateningsuch. We have found over the years, since our last draft, that thethreatening of resignation is an expedient means for an associate

    to get their way short of due process. Any associate who mentionsresignation to the group at large will thusly be immediatelyconsidered as tendering such, and will have to atone for this by

    9. While we do not favor an environment of strict oremotionless professionalism, we do necessitate an atmospherewhich is conducive to performance; the good of the magazineis held above all our feelings. Thus it is preferred that personal

    attacks, statements, arguments, and other things which do nothave to do with the good of the magazine happen behind closeddoors, one on one, between the parties involved. In such a casethat personal differences lead to one party's resignation, the largergroup of associates, while unable to mandate such, does requestas much detail as respectfully possible as regards the leavingparty's necessity for so doing.10. Associates, except in cases of planned and announced

    absences, are expected to be available for a reasonable periodof time each week. Weekends are especially golden for all of us,as most of us have other functions in society. GwI fully respectsother obligations than it. All this being equal, if a period of onemonth passes during which an associate cannot be reached,the associate will be tentatively removed from voting until such atime that we do hear from them. After a period of six weeks, thatassociate will be removed from all functions, and further work forGwI will require a new application.

    Probationary/Conditional Status of New Associates

    Any new Associate Editor shall be required to undergo a probationary/conditional status period not to exceed 30 days.This is intended to allow anobservable pattern of behavior regarding communication, etc to develop, aswell as to allow time for the new Associate to familiarize him/herself with anysoftware used. The terms of said period are as follows:

    --The new Associate shall abide by the conditions of their position as describedabove.

    --The new Associate agrees to publish content with the assistance of anexisting Associate for a period of 30 days.

    --The new Associate agrees that should the conditions of the position goconsistently unmet, the new Associate's status may be placed under review byexisting staff.
