Transcript of Girls Sport Victoria
Girls Sport Victoria (GSV) is very proud to provide an avenue for over 15,000 girls per year to participate in competitive sport. The benefits of being involved in physical activity such as this are numerous and it is inspiring to see such large numbers of young women across the associated schools involved in improving their own physical and mental wellbeing on a weekly basis.
The association is based on the following principles:• The promotion of girls sport• Enhanced opportunities for participation in elite, competitive and recreational sport and physical activity• Accessibility to a diverse range of programs • The fostering of individual talents, team spirit and commitment • The pursuit of excellence• A commitment to the highest standard of ethical behaviour • A commitment to the promotion of health and well-being of all girls.
Across 2019 we have seen phenomenal displays of strength, courage, speed and power. This was highlighted in our weekly sport seasons and Major Carnival events but also displayed when the 24 member schools worked together. At the Victorian School Associations Competition, the GSV team were victorious against 12 other Associations. A remarkable display of what our young women can achieve when working together. We were also represented proudly by our Representative Team who represented GSV in the Interstate Challenge Tournament. GSV celebrated second place overall and we thank our athletes for the teamwork and sportsmanship they displayed throughout the tournament.
In 2019, we saw an enormous increase in the participation rates in our Triathlon event as well as Australian Rules Football. It is the Associations’ ambition to continue to maintain relevance for our athletes and to continue to provide opportunity and support in the areas of their interest.
Finally, we are excited to announce a change to the structure of the weekly sport season in 2020. We look forward to extending our weekly season to achieve two key objectives for our athletes. Firstly, through the extension of the season length, we aim to improve skill development of all students involved and secondly, the opportunity for increased commitment and dedication that comes from involvement with a team. We look forward to providing these increased opportunities to all of our fabulous GSV students in 2020 and thank you for another sensational year of involvement from the students that represent our 24 member schools.
Ms Kristy Kendall - President, Girls Sport Victoria
2019 has once again been an action packed year for Camberwell Girls Sport. Our program has continued to grow with more and more girls participating in the wide variety of sports on offer. There is something for everyone whether it is the competitive nature of the weekly sports program and carnivals or the social and fitness focus of strength and conditioning and running club.
This year started with a record number of competitors in the GSV Triathlon with 37 girls participating in the event. Despite the early arrival at Altona beach on a Sunday morning, the GSV Triathlon is always a favourite event for students and the girls should be very proud of their teamwork and performance on the day. We were lucky to have perfect weather and water conditions which resulted in a very enjoyable and successful morning.
In our Weekly Sport Program girls are always encouraged to build on their skills as well as try new sports. This year our students have seen great success with many teams qualifying for the finals. Of particular note was our Junior Softball team who played exceptionally well throughout the finals and won the Premiership. These teams consisted of many students new to each sport and this was a terrific achievement with each squad demonstrating increased skill and confidence as the season progressed.
Despite the many early morning training sessions, there is no questioning everyone’s dedication to sport and this effort did not go unrewarded when once again, the Diving team qualified for Division 2 Championship Carnival. We were particularly proud of our Junior team who achieved an outstanding result of 2nd in their division. Thank you to our coaches who have been with Camberwell Girls for many seasons and have helped us develop into a strong, competitive force within the GSV Diving competition.
In Swimming, many personal bests were achieved in the pool and the Championship Carnival finished with our Junior Squad finishing 1st and bringing home an impressive trophy. It has been encouraging to see that the future of our Sports Program is bright, with our Junior team also winning their division at the Championship Cross Country Carnival.
Athletics continues to be a very popular sport at Camberwell Girls and the girls displayed outstanding commitment and enthusiasm throughout the season. During the 16 weeks of training our students worked hard to achieve amazing personal and team results which saw the team qualify for the Division 2 Championship Carnival. We also had 17 competitors qualify in 20 events at the Athletics Finals Evening and many medals were won on the night.
Everyone should be very proud of how they have represented Camberwell Girls in 2019 and we look forward to seeing this success continue in the coming years.

Girls Sport Victoria recognises that skill development is an inherent part of schools’ PE and sport programs. GSV develops programs to supplement these. Our Year 7 Sports Expo coincides with Health and Physical Education Week and is one of the most fun filled events on the GSV calendar. Girls learn skills in a wide variety of sports from GSV core sports to others including Lacrosse and
Wheelchair Sport. GSV also conducts other skill development clinics and competitive events throughout the year in sports such as Fencing and Triathlon as well as the Sport Leaders’ Breakfast.
