They say the secret to life is the ability to turn lemons into lemonade and that‘s exactly what

chelsea and Fred Marando of Marando Farms have done. The collapsing economy has claimed many victims since 2008 and chelsea and Fred were not exempt. The two worked in sales and as the economy waned Fred was first to lose his job with chelsea’s job following six months later. Determined to soldier on and do what they had to do to support themselves and their family, the two opted for self sufficiency. After a brief stint owning their own landscaping company, chelsea and Fred began to dream a bigger dream. What if they could use what they knew to impact the

community in a positive way and help to build sustainable food throughout the tri county area? With that dream in mind Marando Farms was born on October 1, 2009.

nestled in the heart of Fort Lauderdale just off Davie Blvd, Marando Farms is more than a Farmers’ Market that is open year round. As a matter of fact, vegetables are only a small portion of what the farm is all about. According to the Marandos, there is a bigger picture involved in what they do: “At farmers’ markets, restaurants, grocery stores, school cafeterias and communities across America, people are searching for healthy food that’s grown on nearby farms.

Meeting this demand will take more farms, more farmers and more farmland growing local food. We’re helping build sustainable food and farming systems to make fresh food from local farms a reality for everyone by: Planning for agriculture and sustainable food systems, Working on the ground for change, Improving food, farm and land use policies, Sustaining farms and farmland for our future, Spreading the No Farms No Food message.”

The Marandos are not just talking the talk, they are walking the walk. Take a tour around the farm and you will see a Bio-Diesel station where they convert used frying oil or waste vegetable oil from local restaurants into fuel to run the farm; A Hydroponics section of the farm where they grow plants using mineral nutrient solutions, in water, without soil; A new Aquaponics section where they are able to farm raise Talapia fish and convert the fish excrement into plant food; A community Garden where locals can rent space to either grow their own vegetables or for donation to local food banks or others in need; not to mention a chicken coup and a large fenced area for their rescued or abandoned animals including pot bellied pigs, goats, and ducks!

chelsea and Fred have personally helped many organizations, clubs, groups, and individuals develop and grow their own gardens to help further their vision of local, sustainable food. In fact, they are so passionate about sustainability that they have founded their own non-profit,

Broward county community Outreach (BccO), to help build community gardens throughout Fort Lauderdale and Broward county’s parks and schools. According to the Marandos, “BCCO is based on the belief that we can improve the community by teaching children a variety of life skills through hands-on gardening. Participants will plant, maintain and harvest gardens under the guidance of trained volunteers supported by BCCO. We truly believe the benefits of reconnecting with nature and getting your hands dirty in soil are endless.”

The face of food is changing and it’s people like Fred and chelsea who, when thrown from a third story window landed on their feet, and are changing it. If it’s one thing we have all learned through this long drawn out recession it’s the value of being self sufficient. Jobs come and go but opportunity is made. napoleon Hill once said, “In every adversity lies the seeds of equal or greater opportunity,” and I think the Marandos have found those seeds and have sown them nicely. I asked chelsea if her quality of life has changed much in the past three years and her response was, “Losing our jobs was the best thing that happened to us, we are all so much happier.”

For more information about Marando Farms please visit their website at www.MarandoFarms.com or stop by at 1401 SW 1st Ave, Fort Lauderdale. If you’d like more information on BccO, visit their website at www.BrowardccO.org

“So you’re being told organic food is no more nutritious than conventional and it’s not worth your extra money. Well I’m

here to say that it is worth the investment. Why do I say that? Pesticides.” - Dr. Oz, Oct. 19, 2012

America’s most popular TV doctor seems to have forgotten his own

words that organic food is “worth the investment” and is instead trashing organics. Why the flip flop?

Less than two months after telling millions of TV viewers that organic food is “worth the investment,” America’s most popular TV doctor is singing a different tune. In the December issue of Time magazine, Dr. Oz described organic foodies as “elitist” -- part of the 1% - and claimed that conventional foods are nutritionally equivalent to organic foods. According to Dr. Oz: “The rise of foodie culture over the past decade has venerated all things small-batch, local-farm and organic - all with premium price tags. But let’s be clear: you don’t need to eat like the 1% to eat healthily.” Suddenly, the pesticides Dr. Oz was so concerned about a couple of months ago, the ones he warned viewers were “one of the greatest threats to your kids’ health,” no longer matter. What’s more, if you’re spending extra money to avoid them, you’re a food snob -- instead of a responsible, health-conscious parent. Dr. Oz’s flip-flop is just the latest in a series of highly-publicized mass media attacks on organic food and farming. It follows on the heels of a much-ballyhooed, controversial Stanford university study, released in September. The Stanford study concluded that fruits and vegetables labeled organic were, on average, no more nutritious than their conventional -- and far less expensive counterparts.

Ironically, it was this same study that Dr. Oz bashed on his October 19 television show for ignoring the obvious: conventional food is loaded with toxic pesticides, which makes it not only less healthful, but downright dangerous. Especially for children. At a time when the health of Americans is rapidly deteriorating -- skyrocketing obesity, childhood diabetes, ever-increasing cases of asthma, allergies, autism, and cancer -- there appears to be a concerted and insidious effort to smear organics, to convince consumers that there’s no connection between their poor health and the low-grade chemical food on their plates. Food routinely grown in nutrient-deficient soil, sprayed with toxic pesticides, pumped full of antibiotics and hormones, and genetically modified in Monsanto’s laboratories. Instead, anti-organic forces are pushing the message that cheaper food is better for your wallet. And just fine for your health. Both the Stanford Study and Dr. Oz’s Time article focus on cost to consumers at the checkout counter. neither addresses the long-term cost of poor health caused by toxic chemicals, or the long-term cost to the planet of chemical-intensive, climate-disruptive, unsustainable agricultural practices. That Stanford study, which was highlighted by major media outlets including the new york Times , Associated press, and cBS news, didn’t address pesticides and their proven link to health problems, especially in children. It didn’t address waterways polluted by tons of pesticides and chemical fertilizers. The study was limited to fruits and vegetables, so it didn’t have to address the

Page 26: Girl STIR Vol 8 Issue 1

26 s T i r r i n g o c c u r r e n c e s

growing public health crisis of antibiotics and hormone residues in meat and dairy, nor the millions of annual food poisoning cases attributed to filthy meat and animal products coming out of the nation’s factory farm feedlots and slaughterhouses. The Stanford study also completely ignored the horrendous damage to the environment by non-organic industrial farms and feedlots, including the devastating consequences to the planet of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide emissions from chemical fertilizers and huge factory farm operations. Recent statistics indicate that the direct (greenhouse gas pollution) and indirect (tropical deforestation) impacts of industrial food and farms are the largest contributor to global warming. What the Stanford study did, thanks to a huge public relations push, was spread the message that organic fruits and vegetables are expensive, and conventional fruits and vegetables are just as good but cheaper. no doubt, the authors hope that consumers will carry over that message from fruits and vegetables, to all things organic. It’s no surprise that the Stanford study would focus on cost. As it turns out, the study was produced by Stanford’s Freeman Spogli Institute, which gets millions in funding from agribusiness giant cargill, the world’s largest agricultural business enterprise, and foundations like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which have deep ties to agricultural chemical and biotechnology corporations like Monsanto. These giant corporations are all part of the same cabal that contributed at least half of the $46 million spent between October 1 and

november 6 to defeat prop 37, the california Right to Know Genetically engineered Food Act. Just a coincidence that the Stanford study and the mass media propaganda barrage that accompanied it was released during the election season, when voters were still weighing their options on the high-profile california GMO labeling law that was making national headlines? The motives behind the Stanford study and the Freeman Spogli Institute are obvious. What caused Dr. Oz to flip-flop is anyone’s guess -- and just might make for a good story someday. Informed sources behind the scenes have told us that Dr. Oz is under tremendous pressure from the biotech industry after airing a segment earlier this fall that supported GMO labeling. He’s also getting pressure from Big pharma and federal regulatory agencies for his previous exposures of industry malpractices. consumer demand for organics is rising steadily. Last year, organic foods accounted for $31.4 billion in sales, according to a recent Obama administration report. compare that with just $3.6 billion in 1997, and it makes sense that multinational junk food companies, like pepsi, General Mills, coca-cola and others, are buying up organic brands. But these companies also know that there’s more money in the $50-billion “natural” foods market, an unregulated market with higher profit margins and lower barriers to entry, than there is in certified organics. That explains why these same multinational companies pitched in the other half of the $46 million to defeat prop 37. After all, if

Page 27: Girl STIR Vol 8 Issue 1

27www.GIRlsTIR.com

passed, the initiative would have banned the use of the word “natural” on any product containing genetically modified foods. That would have forced companies to use more expensive, certified organic ingredients in their highly profitable “natural” products. Estimates are that if prop 37 had passed, it would have triggered a multi-billion dollar increase in the sales of organic and non-GMO foods, and a corresponding decrease in the sales of so-called “natural” foods. could it be that Big Ag and Big pharma, who supply the drugs for non-organic factory farms, are feeling threatened by the fact that the market for organics is growing ten times faster than the market for conventional foods? The bottom line is that the real 1%, America’s giant food processors and supermarket chains, are alarmed by the fact that consumers are wising up -- and rising up -- in greater numbers than ever before to demand transparency in labeling, and greater access to organic, locally-sourced, humanely-produced, nutritious food. In a struggling economy, the quickest way to grab the attention of consumers is to promise them short-term savings. Messages like the ones transmitted by the Stanford study and Dr. Oz’s recent article grossly oversimplify the issue of organics versus conventional foods, while propping up an unsustainable but highly profitable factory farm and processed food industry. They miss the point, intentionally, that pesticides, drug residues, and filthy factory farms damage public health and raise u.S. medical costs, which are already the highest in the world.

But no matter how hard Big Ag and the mass media try to misinform consumers, they are fighting a losing battle. There is mounting scientific evidence that genetically engineered foods are hazardous to human and animal health, and are severely damaging the environment and the climate. This is the reason why millions of Americans are turning to certified organic food, which bans GMOs, synthetic pesticides, and animal drugs. The big lie is that cheap chemical and GMO food isn’t really cheap, if you take the long view. Shame on you Dr. Oz, and the rest of the mass media for perpetuating this big lie. no matter how many universities pump out however many studies, no matter how many famous TV personalities -- including those wearing scrubs -- try to tell us otherwise, our current systems of food and agriculture are unsustainable. That’s why the organic food and farming movement is growing by leaps and bounds. That’s why organic foods and agriculture will soon become the norm, just as they once were for thousands of years, not just the alternative. About the authors: Katherine Paul is director of development and communications at the Organic Consumers Association. Ronnie Cummins is founder and director of the Organic Consumers Association. Cummins is author of numerous articles and books, including “Genetically Engineered Food: A Self-Defense Guide for Consumers” (Second Revised Edition Marlowe & Company 2004).

drinking Watercontaminated well water is used for drinking water for nearby cities and towns. There have been over 1,000 documented cases of water contamination next to areas of gas drilling as well as cases of sensory, respiratory, and neurological damage due to ingested contaminated water.

Left behindOnly 30-50% of the fracturing fluid is recovered, the rest of the toxic fluid is left in the ground and is not biodegradable.

The waste fluid is left in open air pits to evaporate, releasing harmful VOc’s (volatile organic compounds) into the atmosphere, creating contaminated air, acid rain, and ground level ozone.

In the end, hydraulic fracking produces approximately 300,000 barrels of natural gas a day, but at the price of numerous environmental, safety, and health hazards.

don’t think it’s worth it? Help support the FRAc Act (Fracturing Responsibility and Awareness of chemicals Act) which would require the energy industry to disclose all chemicals used in fracturing fluid as well as repeal fracking’s exemption from the Safe Drinking Water Act.

Where does Florida stand? There are currently no fracking sites in Florida, however; fracking could be on the horizon. Big oil and gas companies are pushing forward with plans to begin “fracking” in Florida on land just outside the Big cypress national preserve—the gateway to the Florida everglades—just 45 miles west of Miami.

The Everglades rest on a limestone shelf leading out into the Florida Bay connecting to Lake Okeechobee and the Kissimmee River. Fracking in Florida could put the state’s entire water system at risk of contamination. Big cypress national preserve, part of the Everglades ecosystem, by itself constitutes 42 percent of the water in the Everglades. Much of the water used by fracking companies is drawn from local sources, free of charge.

What you can do...Do your own research, if you believe Fracking to be too risky, contact your representatives and Governor Rick Scott and let them know you oppose fracking in Florida.

It’s not that the hundreds of billions of dollars spent over the years on cancer research has been a complete waste,

but sometimes the simplest answer is the best one. In this case, researchers seem to have confirmed what science has known for quite some time: that a well-balanced diet is the “secret” to better health. A just-released study of nearly 15,000 men over the age of 50 suggests that taking a daily supplemental multivitamin could reduce rates of cancer by about eight percent. That may not sound like much, but it’s enough of a risk reduction to make it well worth your while to pop a One-A-Day or centrum. “Despite the lack of definitive trial data regarding the benefits of multivitamins in the prevention of chronic disease, including cancer, many men and women take them for precisely this reason,” said Dr. Michael Gaziano, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and lead author of the study published today in the Journal of the American Medical Association. “Our study shows a modest but significant benefit in cancer prevention.” differences seen over past studies

The study did not examine men and women under the age of 50, so it wasn’t clear whether that age group would see similar benefits. Then again, cancer generally afflicts older adults. previous large-study research, including a 180,000-patient effort begun in 1992 and the Women’s Health Initiative Study of 160,000 women that was published in 2009, discovered that multivitamins had little-to-no effect on cancer risk, ABc news reported. “In fact, a 2010 Swedish study of 35,000 women who reported using multivitamins had an increased risk of breast cancer,” the news affiliate said. What was different this time around, then? First of all, the new study assigned men to a couple of groups randomly - one which took a daily centrum Silver capsule while the other took a placebo. In previous studies, researchers used an observational technique, which means the participants were not compared to a group taking placebos. Secondly, men who were 65 years of age or older, on average, were followed over 11 years; this involved a longer follow-

Page 36: Girl STIR Vol 8 Issue 1

36 s T i r r i n g h e a L T h

up than in earlier studies and included sufficient time for cancer to develop. Lastly, the earlier trial used a multivitamin, whose aim is to fill in nutritional gaps in a person’s diet. Other trials have only tested single vitamins - A, E, or D - in large doses, which is considerably different from the way people normally get the kinds of vitamins and minerals they need from foods. “The reduction in total cancer risk in [the study] argues that the broader combination of low-dose vitamins and minerals contained in the [centrum Silver] multivitamin, rather than an emphasis on previously tested high-dose vitamins and mineral trials, may be paramount for cancer prevention,” said Gaziano. poor dietary habits make a multivitamin necessary Dr. David Katz, director of the yale preventative Research center, who was not involved in the study, noted that previous studies involving single vitamins have shown them to be ineffective. “clearly the notion of megadoses of isolated nutrients has been proven wrong again and again,” he said. “Maybe the active ingredient in broccoli is broccoli.” If the multivitamin approach is the answer, then why not simply recommend that people eat a mix of foods that provide

all of the vitamins necessary for a proper diet? Wouldn’t that also serve to reduce cancer rates? Researchers admit the problem is that only a small fraction of the population - 1.5 percent - gets the recommended daily allowance of fruits and vegetables, says Katz. “clearly...taking a multivitamin is easy; changing dietary patterns is hard,” he said. According to a government study released last year, more Americans are taking daily vitamin supplements than ever before. More than half take some sort of dietary supplement, the study by the national center for Health Statistics found. Sources: www.abcnews.go.com www.naturalnews.com/multivitamins.html

The typical American diet is a deadly one, consisting primarily of toxic and acid-forming

foods like processed sugars, artificial sweeteners, refined grains, conventionally produced meats and dairy, and hidden genetically modified organisms. All this, combined with a plethora of other challenging environmental factors (such as lack of rest, psychological stress, and pharmaceutical drugs), mean it’s no wonder that more and more people are being diagnosed with chronic, degenerative illnesses or otherwise deadly conditions for which modern conventional medicine claims to have no known cure. One of the basic underlying problems with this unsustainable lifestyle - and there are many - is the average consumer’s lack of understanding that the body must balance the blood’s pH levels at a slightly alkaline level of 7.365 in order to survive. When a person ingests food to “burn” for fuel, the digestive and metabolic process transforms it into a kind of ash which is either acidic or alkaline. The laws of modern biochemistry further explain that it is not the organic matter of foods (whether the food itself is acidic or alkaline), but their inorganic matter (such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, sulfur, phosphorous; that is, how they break down in our bodies), that determines either the acidity or alkalinity of this ashy residue. For this reason, and because all foods in nature contain both acid and alkaline-

forming elements according to the conscious Living center, balance is either achieved or thwarted as a direct result of the foods we choose to eat. Too many acid-forming foods can have dire consequences for our health, with “acidosis” being a common diagnosis in diabetics, for example. This is because when the nutrients required to maintain this slightly alkaline state cannot be obtained from food, the body will instead draw from its own stores, like the bones or other vital tissues - damaging its ability to repair itself and detoxify heavy metals, thereby making a person more vulnerable to fatigue and illness. And the margin for error is small. Even an only slightly acidic pH of 6.9 can actually lead to coma and death. Of course, the ultimate goal is balance. Eating too many alkalizing foods can lead to its own fair share of complications over time, but the risk of this is seemingly less likely, given the current sorry state of today’s highly addictive consumerist diet. To combat the effects of such a diet, here are six of the most alkaline-forming foods to work into your everyday meals:

1. root vegetablesDue to the healing “yang” nature of these foods in traditional chinese medicine, and their tendency to be more rich in minerals than many other vegetables, it may be safe to say that you can’t get enough of them. Look for radishes especially (black, red or white), as well as beets, carrots, turnips, horseradish and rutabaga.

ready to eat after steaming for just 15-20 minutes, root vegetables will help you feel both satiated and better grounded.

2. cruciferous vegetablesThese are the veggies we all know and love, made even more delicious with just a small amount of healthy, homemade sauce like pesto. choose from broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and the like.

3. Leafy greensThese include kale, Swiss chard, turnip greens and spinach - of which spinach may in fact be the best pick. Known especially for its rich vitamin K and folate content, spinach is also packed with vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, antioxidants and fiber, helping to improve digestion and even vision.

4. garlicA true miracle food, garlic appears at the top of innumerable lists of foods that encourage overall health, and alkaline-forming food is no exception. Among its other benefits are its ability to promote cardiovascular and immune health by lowering blood pressure, cleansing the liver and fighting off disease.

5. cayenne peppers (capsicum)As part of a family of potent, tropical peppers which contain enzymes essential to endocrine function, cayenne is among the most alkalizing foods. It is known for its antibacterial properties and is a rich supply of vitamin A, making it a helpful

agent in fighting off the harmful free radicals that lead to stress and illness.

6. LemonsLemons may be the most alkalizing food of all. As a natural disinfectant, it can heal wounds while also providing potent and immediate relief for hyperacidity and virus-related conditions, as well as coughs, colds, flu and heartburn. lemon also works to energize the liver and promote detoxification. So it can’t hurt to think twice about what’s on your plate at your next meal, but not doing so might. Just applying that age-old motherly advice to “eat your vegetables” can be a solid first step in achieving better health. With freedoms being eroded in small and big ways, it is good to know how

others stand up for the cause of liberty. It’s also important to stay informed and know how we, or someone close to us, can do the same.

The following methods are not discussed often enough. Many people shy away from talking about them because they can be controversial. But in most cases, people are simply uninformed and don’t realize these options are available to propel the cause of liberty forward.

1. Whistleblowers: rats or martyrs?

What you think of whistleblowers may depend on what side of the table you’re sitting on. In this case, we’re talking about whistleblowers who, knowing full well they face serious retribution (despite whistleblower protections), dig deep for courage and publicize how the government office or crony corporation they work for is cheating, threatening, or defrauding the public.

The jailed Swiss banker who gave up his American clients’ financial information to the IRS (explaining how he helped them keep their financial dealings private and later collecting a $104 million snitching fee) didn’t blow the whistle to expand individual liberty.

However, Vincent A. cefalu, 25-year veteran of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), blew the whistle and exposed the fiasco known as “Operation Fast and Furious.” By doing so, he put his career at risk and made things very uncomfortable for himself.

As we now know, Operation Fast and Furious allowed straw buyers to purchase guns in the u.S. and transfer them to Mexican drug cartels. The plan was to later trace and follow the breadcrumbs left by the guns backwards and catch Mexican drug criminals.

The plan backfired and blew up in their face. Over 2,000 guns were purchased, and the u.S. government-provided weapons have been involved in the killing of hundreds of innocent bystanders – guns from the operation have been found at over 170 crime scenes in both Mexico and the u.S. and these guns were even used to kill a u.S. border agent. Investigations are ongoing.

The bottom line: we may have never learned about this fiasco, and this operation may still be in existence today, if it wasn’t for brave whistleblowers willing to stick their neck on the line to seek justice and liberty for all. you can learn more

about whistleblower rights and protections here: www.whistleblowers.org

2. The boycott: effective deterrent or Just a bunch of Whiners making Trouble?

A boycott can be an effective way for individuals and private enterprises to exercise the freedom of association (or exclusion for that matter).

If you disagree with the comportment of another individual, organization, enterprise, or even a country, using the silent treatment can work very well. plus, it’s effective, non-violent, inexpensive, and it can be laser focused to deal with one specific issue without big government involvement.

In the past, boycotts played roles in sparking the move to make tuna fishing “dolphin-safe” and end apartheid in South Africa.

Recently, boycotts were used to punish big banks for laying heavy fees on their customers when millions of bank clients fled to credit unions. And the liberty movement has criticized the current presidential debates and The commission on presidential Debates (the private organization that handles the logistics) because they exclude other parties such as Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson.

Before the first debate aired, Philips Electronics and the yWcA pulled their advertising sponsorships in protest. One word of caution: boycotts based on

Page 50: Girl STIR Vol 8 Issue 1

50

trumped-up charges and ulterior motives are not uncommon in the internet age. Before joining any boycott, do your due diligence to make sure you are not being exploited.

3. The Jury Veto (Nullification)

“Jury Nullification is the most practical way to stop the juggernaut police state,” said Former Fully Informed Jury Association (FIJA) Board Member, Tom Stahl. A properly functioning jury system consisting of fully informed jurors can accomplish what elections don’t – provide a check on bureaucratic, legislative, and prosecutorial overreaching.

“I consider trial by jury as the only anchor ever yet imagined by man, by which a government can be held to the principles of its constitution,” said Thomas Jefferson. Federal prosecutors and judges seek to impose their will imperiously by sidestepping the jury system altogether and coercing defendants to accept plea deals under the threat of being overcharged and facing inordinately severe sentencing at trial.

According to the FIJA website, “the primary function of the independent juror is not, as many think, to dispense punishment to fellow citizens accused of breaking various laws, but rather to protect fellow citizens from tyrannical abuses of power by government.” “The constitution guarantees you the right to trial by jury. This means that government must bring its case before a jury of The people if government wants to deprive any person of life, liberty, or property. Jurors can say no to government tyranny by refusing to

convict.” Some have gone as far as saying the jury serves as the fourth branch of government, because it provides such a powerful check and balance on overreaching laws. Jury duty is a noble and effective service each of us can do to defend liberty for all.

In a recent case, a Minnesota dairy farmer charged with violating the state’s restrictions on unpasteurized (raw) milk sales was acquitted. Supporters of

unpasteurized milk feel this is an important victory for consumer choice and sends a message to government to butt out of our food choices. We can see more cases like this as potential jurors become better informed. you can get more informed by visiting www.fija.org.

4. state nullification: state Level civil disobedience using the Tenth amendment

The federal government is too powerful,

s T i r r i n g a c T i o n

Page 51: Girl STIR Vol 8 Issue 1

51www.GIRlsTIR.com

too big, and only getting bigger and bolder with its power grabs. Fortunately, our Founding Fathers had great foresight and purposefully added the Tenth Amendment into our Bill of Rights.

“The Tenth Amendment was intended to confirm the understanding of the people at the time the constitution was adopted, that powers not granted to the united States were reserved to the States or to the people. It added nothing to the instrument

as originally ratified.” – United States v. Sprague (1931).

“When states and local communities take the lead on policy, the people are that much closer to the policymakers, and policymakers are that much more accountable to the people. Few Americans have spoken with their president; many have spoken with their mayor.”

“Adherence to the Tenth Amendment is the first step towards ensuring liberty in the united States. Liberty through decentralization,” says the think tank, The Tenth Amendment center.

At the moment, about a dozen states are flexing their power and either considering or already placing important checks on ever-expanding federal power by opposing legislation such as nDAA and Obamacare. Learn how to get your state and local legislatures behind liberty by checking out www.TenthAmendmentcenter.com.

5. help sheriffs, Law enforcement, and peace officers stand on the right side of Liberty, Too...

Although it may not seem like it today with the unhealthy codependency between federal, state, and local law enforcement, there was a time when local and state officers were expected to protect their citizens from power-hungry federal agents. Today, federal agents disregard the constitution and state laws and enter state and local jurisdictions to forcibly arrest citizens.

In the Federalist Papers, Thomas Jefferson writes to Joseph caleb in 1816, “let the national government be entrusted with the defense of the nation, and its foreign and federal relations; the State governments with the civil rights, laws, police, and administration of what concerns the State generally; the counties with the local concerns of the counties, and each ward [township] direct the interests within itself.” In other words, decentralization is the best method to ensure individual freedom.

If you have loved ones in law enforcement, don’t let them use the refrain, “I’m just doing my job” as a reason to look the other way when it comes to upholding the laws. you may want to introduce them to the constitutional Sheriffs and peace Officers Association (www.cspoa.org) and the community Sheriff project (www.countysheriffproject.org) where they can gain “information and public support to carry out their duties in accordance with their Oaths of Office.”
