store’s use. Start planning an event today!

Printable Activities Components

Getting Started • After reading through the planner, choose the mix of activities that suits your store and customers.

• Place signage in your children’s section or near the cash register to promote the event. Post a sign-up sheet in your store and encourage girls to bring their dolls.

• Advertise the event with announcements in your store’s newsletter, on your website, and in your local newspaper. You can also distribute event information to local schools, libraries, and Girl Scout troops.

• For each girl you expect to attend, make a copy of each of the reproducibles you plan to use. Gather the supplies you’ll need for the activities, such as crayons.

• Consider merchandising the new Girl of the Year books in or near the area where you’re hosting the event.

• Includes tips on what to do before your event, speaking prompts for each activity, and information about the following:

Here’s a selection of activities you can use to promote the 2015 Girl of the Year book line. Host an event with the mix of activities that suits your customers’ interests and the space, time, and staff you have available.

Story SummaryWelcome the participants to the event. Introduce Grace as American Girl’s newest contemporary character, the 2015 Girl of the Year.

Grace’s stories are about her following her passions, having the entrepreneurial spirit to act on them, and using her talents to give back to those in need.

Grace has a big summer plan—starting a business with friends! When Mom announces a trip to Paris, Grace gets on board, but her trip isn’t all she hoped it would be. She and her French cousin aren’t hitting it off, and Grace’s friends back home have started a business without her. Can Grace step out of her comfort zone, try a few new things, and come up with a successful idea of her own?

Note: This planner includes activities related to Grace’s stories, but girls need not have read the stories to enjoy and learn from the activities.

Travel Buddies Icebreaker ActivityTalking prompt:

When Grace travels to Paris for the summer, it shakes up her whole life! She thinks of the trip as an exciting adventure, but she also sometimes feels lonely and probably wishes she had a travel buddy. I’m going to have each of you introduce yourself and then tell the rest of the group where you dream of traveling. Once you’ve introduced yourselves, you’re going to get a chance to meet each other, with the help of the passports I’ll give you.

Supplies:

• The Travel Buddies passports

Pre-event preparation:

Download the passport sheets and fold them on the dashed lines to create booklets.

Instructions:

1. Use the talking prompt above. Then have the girls stand and introduce themselves one by one. Ask each to tell the group her name, the place she’d most like to visit, and one food she’d like to eat while she’s there. Before she sits back down, hand her a passport.

2. Once everyone has introduced herself and has a passport, give the girls time to mingle. Ask the girls to try to get a signature in her passport from every other girl.

Guess the Utensil Talking prompt:

This game will have you acting like a chef by showing how to use kitchen equipment. You’ll each get to choose a slip of paper with the name of a baker’s utensil on it. Act out how you’d use that utensil, and see if anyone can guess what you’re cooking with!

Supplies:

• 1 Guess the Utensil activity sheet


Download the reproducible. Cut out each of the slips, and put them in a bag or bowl so that girls can pick them.

Instructions:

1. Use the talking prompt above. Ask each girl to come up one by one, choose a slip, and act out using the utensil she’s chosen.

2. If a girl doesn’t know what a particular utensil is, she can choose another slip.

3. If girls get stuck, try to give them clues to keep the game moving along.

Recipe Box CraftTalking prompt:

As a baker, Grace uses many recipes. She uses tried-and-true recipes her grandpa and grand-ma share with her, and she also creates her own. She needs a place to store all the recipes she collects, so a recipe box is perfect for keeping them organized. Now you’ll make a recipe box like one Grace might use.

Supplies:

• The recipe box templates• Recipe sheet packets• Sample recipe sheets


Download enough of each reproducible to give to all attendees. Set colored pencils or

markers on each table.

Instructions:

1. Use the talking prompt above.

2. Give each girl 1 copy of each reproducible. Ask girls to color in the recipe-box template, cut it out, and fold it into a box shape.

3. Once they’ve created a recipe box, girls can fill out the recipe cards with recipes from the sample sheet, or leave them blank so they can fill them in with their own recipes.

Bingo in ParisTalking prompt:

Grace used all kinds of methods and tricks to practice learning French when she visited Paris. This fun (and educational) game of bingo might have helped her out!

Supplies:

• 31 Bingo in Paris word sheets

• 30 Bingo in Paris grid sheets

• scissors

• markers or colored pencils

• tape


Download enough of each reproducible to give to all attendees. Also download a word sheet for yourself. Cut up your word sheet so that every word or phrase is on its own slip, and put the slips into a bag or bowl to mix up.

Instructions:

1. Use the talking prompt above.

2. Give each girl a word sheet and a grid sheet. Have scissors, tape, and markers or colored pencils on the tables.

3. Tell girls to cut up their word sheets and tape words or phrases to the spaces on their grid sheets. They will have leftovers, and they should try to not have the same words as a friend or neighbor.

4. Once everyone has a unique grid created, begin a game of bingo. Say the French word and the English definition slowly, so that girls can follow along. Tell the girls that anyone who has the word on her sheet should repeat it back (in French only) and mark it off her grid.

5. Keep doing this until someone has marked off a complete row of words horizontally, verti-cally, or diagonally. When someone has marked a full row, she can yell “Bingo!”

is recommended. All the materials you use for crafts and games should be age graded as 8+.

• Remember that materials may be reproduced only for use with an in-store American Girl event.
