Gimme Shelter May 2007 Melbourne, you rock! A whopping $30K+ (after costs) was raised at Melbourne’s Kujenga event last month. It was a truly awesome effort by Kelsey Wilson, Meg Jacobs and all the fundraising team. It was a fantastic evening – Kate Ceberano and our African drummers put in stellar performances. Kate gets top credit for involving an unsuspecting member of the audience in her “Pash” song (he then paid a princely sum for a copy of it on CD). The food also deserves big raps – told you it was gonna be spesh! Asante sana to everyone who came for your great generosity… We can now definitely afford our utopia block we’re negotiating on, plus get started on building Kesho Leo. Exciting times indeed! Kujenga take two, Wed June 27 Melbourne and Brizzy have strutted their stuff and now it’s time for Sydney to put on a show. An Art Show, to be exact, with a colourful, exotic African experience to boot. There’ll be gorgeous African artworks, incredible photos by Luke Burgess, music, food, drink and maybe even the odd fire-eater or witch doctor. If you can donate any sizeable prizes (we’re talking bling here!), email Beck at [email protected] Get on track The next fws fundraiser is at the Doomben Races this Saturday (tomorrow!). Trackside marquee with drinks and tasty morsels, your own bookie and fantastic prizes. Tix $150. If you’re in Brisbane this weekend, email Shona NOW at [email protected]. Bigger ‘n better Our website is being redesigned to be more capable and interactive. Promosys are the inspired, helpful, patient, understanding guys who are doing it, so check it out soon. Tees go off (not under the armpits) Damo and Juliet gave us the BEST fws t-shirts for Africa. Perfect colour, terrific publicity and worn constantly! don’t forget... Rob, our favourite architect, passionately sharing his vision of Kesho with the crowd at Melbourne Kujenga, while the gals try to be useful holding up samples of his plans. A warm thanks Remember Gloria’s jumpers? Here are the grateful kids at Samaritan Orphanage at Moshono, near Arusha. We’re in credit! (kidding)But we will be one day, with Jamie Thwin and Endeavour

Accounting on board as accounting advisors (and your

fundraising, of course). They’re contributing their expertise

to help us manage and grow fws. We love them already!

Nothing but the truthDue to our substantial, but sustainable!, growth spurt,

we’ve decided we also need a full legal firm (rather than

just one overworked lawyer) to keep us legit. If you know

of any companies who’d be interested, let us know ASAP.

Come on, Janine…Janine Moodley has joined

the team as our Corporate

Sponsor Liaison Officer. We’re

extremely lucky to share her

with Catalyst (a not-for-profit

organisation ‘creating a culture

of philanthropy in corporate

Australia’). We love Catalyst’s

style and are serious about

attracting contributions from

big players. If anyone knows

any corporates (eco-, food-,

water-, shelter-, organic-, kids-,

education- or health-related)

that want some ‘put back’,

then Janine’s the gal to ring – if

she hasn’t rung them already!

We want your help… yes, you!Our fundraising is starting to tick off some of our wishlist items (below right, zoom in to read it), but it’s CRUNCH TIME. This is a call to action, dear friends: please host your own fundraiser, big or small. We still have a way to go before Kesho is up and running.

Our best suggestion is a movie night – just call your local cinema, explain you want to host a fundraiser and pick an upcoming movie. The cinema will give you a reduced price, then you add $10-15 to it and email an invite to everyone you know. Get your neighbours/friends/family to cook and serve food. The cinema may incorporate alcohol for a small fee (eg a beer each). Call us for some fws info, use your contacts to get some prizes donated for a raffle, collate your RSVPs and then rock up and have a great time. Seriously, it’s so not hard.

Here are Beck and Daz on their brand new,

bye-bye-petrol-fume bikes, donated by

Rotary. Once the kids arrive at Kesho, there’ll

be enough for them all, too. Cheers Rotary!
