The future of vinyl records, be they 12", 10"

or 7", LPs or singles, seemed written in stone;

RIP, chiselled into white marble. However, far

from going the way of the dodo, as was

expected, the record is enjoying a renaissance.

There are plenty of labels releasing fine music,

old and new, on vinyl. Some labels are

reissuing the best albums from the past, be it

rock and roll, blues, jazz, country or soul,

often on heavy weight 180g virgin vinyl, fit for

the audiophile. Other labels are pressing up

classic tracks on 7", usually where the original

would be next to impossible to find and leave

you bereft of most limbs, financially speaking.

Some of my favourites are the reproductions

(repros), exact replicas of classic rockabil,ly,

blues r&b and soul originals, complete wi th

origin~l artwork, 7s you would ?ever otherwise

find but would be willing to kill your granny

for. Often bootlegged, pressed up in batches

of a few hundred, these repros sell for

between £5 and £10 and are collectable inthemselves. At the moment there is a spate of

high quality 7" repros on the m~rket th.at

should keep anyone interested 10 claSSIC

recordings happy for hours.

Shamblin Sexton confesses

about his vinyl fetish

Records! Records]! Thrice Records!!! Barely a

day goes by without a coveted vinyl acquisition

finding a new home on my welcoming shelves.

CDs are all very well and MP3s are convenient,

and, certainly, both have their place; but

nothing is as wonderful, nothing fires the

imagination, nothing stirs the soul and no

media will ever take the place of the humble

record.

MP3s and file sharing were to be the last

straw, the proverbial nail in the coffin. But

digital music doesn't sound so good, not to

people who love the warmth of vinyl, not to

audiophiles, and, most importantly, not on a

big system. The bass is lacking, as is the topend. The compression used to make audio

files so small looses a lot of the necessary

frequencies. New research even goes so far

as to suggest that some frequencies, outside

of our range of perception (that are

critically lacking from digital recordings)

may interact with the frequencies we canhear, creating a warmer, more natural sound.

Science is looking for the reason we vinyl

lovers still prefer a record.

The digital revolution is certainly amazing,

and I enjoy having ten thousand tunes in my

pocket as much as the next man, but give me

a record, any day. How often have I bought

a CD or download a track, fallen in love

with it and had to go hunt down the vinyl?

Too often to count, but it is always worth it.

The record sounds so much better. They

may be heavy and cumbersome to lug

around (especially when moving house),but it is always worth the effort. When

playing out to a crowd, in a club or a pub,

people love to see vinyl. The very fact that

it's a record playing seems to add to the

atmosphere (depending on what it's playing,

of course).

~~,

" ~ 1 1 I E~~~~~~!~!e a well-mown cinematic soundcliche, and is claimed to have been used in over 149 films

The effect gained new popularity (its use often becoming an in-joke)

after it was used in Star Wars and many other blockbuster fIlms aswell as television programs and video games. The sound is named for Private Wilhelm, a character in The Charge atFeather River, a 1953 western where the character is shot with anarrow. This is the first use as a stock sound effect.

The Wilhelm scream's revival came from movie sound designer BenBurtt, who re-discovered the original recording (which he found as astudio reel labeled "Man being eaten by alligator") and incorporated itinto a scene in Star Wars. Burtt began use the effect in other films heworked on, including most projects involving George Lucas and Steven

Spielberg. Other sound designers picked up on the effect, and inclusionof the sound in fIlms became a tradition among the community ofsound designers.Research by Burtt suggests that act9r and singer She b Wooley, best known for his novelty song Flying Purple People Eater in1958, is likely to have been the voice actor who originally performedthe scream. This has been supported by a 2005 interview with LindaDotson, Wooley's widow. She confirmed that it was Wooley'sthat had been in so many westerns adding "He always used tojoke about how he was so great about screaming and

dying in films." .\\l~TI1'IIA~1'~€t .~ \ \ 9 f ; ~ : ; '~ 9 ~ ~ \ Z ~ 9 ? 1 i ' J J t
