In 1787 a young Irishman named Arthur Hill Gillmor, along with several other “ political dissidents”, came ashore in Machias Bay in an area now known as Cutler. The prisoners were put aboard a ship in Dublin, Ireland headed for the colony of Virginia where they were destined to serve as conscripts of the British Government. When the ship ran low on provisions the captain decided to put the

group ashore and told them they were a days walk from Boston. The luck of the Irish brought us to Lincoln instead of Richmond.
