Our School Leader InducƟon ceremony conducted on Monday 9 March 2020 was a great celebraƟon which was well aƩended by parents, carers and extended family. Our special guests made special menƟon of how calm and aƩenƟve our collecƟve student group was and how smart they looked in their school uniforms. CongratulaƟons to our various school leaders on being recognised during this special event. Each student leader received a badge that recognises their posiƟon as well as a cerƟcate present by Member for Maitland, Ms Jenny Aitchison. A number of our students have recently trialled for various sporƟng teams as a part of the Maitland PSSA. CongratulaƟons to Zalia and Ceanna who were successful in being selected in the district squad for Girls’ Football. Unfortunately, due to current circumstances, there will be no PSSA sporƟng events in the near future. Our selfserve home reader program has been launched and is proving a real hit with our students. Mrs Hunt and Mrs Griths are available to help parents select and exchange readers on a daily basis at the commencement of each day. The program is proving popular with our younger students, but it would be fantasƟc to see more of our primary students becoming more engaged. I have been in contact with representaƟves from the Department of EducaƟon Infrastructure group and Maitland City Council in relaƟon to the issues with roads around our school. In parƟcular, I have raised the narrow nature of Northview Street and the damaged verge, as well as the lack of footpaths and entrances on Ryan’s Road and Gillieston Road. While we wait for their collecƟve response, I encourage everyone to drive with extra cauƟon around our school during morning and aŌernoon periods. Have a good weekend. Dear Families,

We have had some very posi ve events and achievements over the past two

weeks that everyone at Gillieston Public School should be proud to celebrate.

Our School Leader Induc on ceremony conducted on Monday 9 March 2020

was a great celebra on which was well a ended by parents, carers and

Website Changes

Over the past couple of weeks there have been some minor

changes made to our school website to assist parents,

carers and families to access school informa on with

greater ease. There is a new tab ‘For Parents’ which

contains headings, Notes, Canteen, Forms & Informa on.

Home Reading Heroes 3-6

This week we are ready to go with our new Home Reading

Program for K‐6. Books can be changed from the home

reading book trolley located inside the library door from

8:35 to 9:00am Monday to Friday with the assistance of

Mrs Griffiths.

Classroom teachers will provide a list to Mrs Griffiths as a

guide for levelled readers. Please note that the book should

be easy to read, therefore may be a different level to what

children are reading in class with their teacher.

How to borrow

Return books into the return tray.

Select your new book

Write the name of the book on your log

Hand in your home reading log a er 25 nights of reading

Return the book when you have finished and start again!

Over the next couple of weeks the website will con nue to

be updated.

Students will be awarded a cer ficate for each 25 nights of

reading when their signed home reading log sheets are

returned to Mrs Griffiths. Younger students may need to

change their reader more frequently to achieve nightly

reading whereas older students may read the same book

over a period of me. It is the signature of reading that

acknowledges that they are reading nightly.

Parents and Carers will receive a reminder if Home Readers

are not returned within 21 days and may be required to

replace the cost of the book if not returned.

Please support your child and encourage the enjoyment of

reading as he/she moves through our home reading

program.

These important mee ngs will be conducted in the last

weeks of this term. Parents will be provided the op on of

face to face or telephone mee ngs. Staff will be distribu ng

availability rosters in the near future so that mes can be

arranged to suit as many people as possible.

VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS is $25 per student. These

fees go directly to providing everyday resources for all

students in the classroom. Payment can be made online

via the school website. Please enter “Resource Fees”

under the payment descrip on. Payment can also be made

via the school office. Please place payment in an envelope

with your child’s name, class & “Resource Fee” wri en

clearly on the front & give to your class teacher or the

school office.

PERMISSION NOTES are sent home with students, sent

via the Schoolzine app, emailed to parents & posted on

our school website. Go to gillieston‐p.schools.nsw.edu.au.

All whole school/class notes are posted but individual/

sport team notes may not be posted online.

NEWSLETTERS are posted on our school website

fortnightly on Friday & are sent via the Schoolzine app &

emailed to parents. Copies of the newsle er are also

available at the school office.

SCHOOLZINE APP Permission notes, newsle ers &

communica on with parents are sent through the

Schoolzine app. Please see details included on the back of

this page on how to download the app. For parents who

already have the app, a reminder to update your groups to

your child’s current scholas c year so you are no fied

correctly.

PARENT ON‐LINE PAYMENTS can be made through our

school website. Go to gillieston‐p.schools.nsw.edu.au and

click on “Make a Payment” in the menu bar. Follow the

prompts to make a payment via Visa or Mastercard. Please

ensure you enter the payment descrip on as men oned in

your child’s permission note. Detailed instruc ons are

included on our website under permission notes.

STUDENT ABSENCES Parents/Carer can advise of

absences via the Schoolzine App, a note to the teacher or

by replying to the SMS that is automa cally sent each day.

Alterna vely, parents may phone the school office to

advise of their child’s absence.

SCHOOL STARTS at 9.05am. Students who arrive at this

me should be accompanied by a parent & are required to

receive a late arrival slip from the front office. Students

who arrive late on a regular basis may be referred to the

Department’s Home School Liaison Officer.

BOOKCLUB order & payments are made online through

Scholas c Australia. Details on how to make an order &

payment are included over the page.

Car & Neighbour Respect

P & C COMMITTEE

Our P & C Commi ee works closely with our school staff to

ensure our students receive quality educa on. We raise

funds to purchase resources that supplement the school as

well as run the school canteen every Wednesday, Thursday

& Friday. All parents and carers are encouraged to become

involved.

1/2BFocusClass1/2B were super excited when our new furniture arrived in week 7. They are loving the spacious tables and

comfortable chairs. We have a classroom of learners who strive to do their very best following PBL classroom and

playground expecta ons. All students have se led well learning daily rou nes and enjoying set‐tasks across all areas

of the curriculum. We would like to thank all of the families that joined us for our first K‐2 assembly item last week.

All students were enthusias c to perform in front of parents and our community.

Cra Club

Cra Club is held in the Library second lunch. Students

have been making cra that corresponds to themes they

are learning class, including Dr Seuss, Harmony Day, St

Patrick’s Day, look out for our Easter cra soon. Mrs

Griffiths is loving spending me with interested students

and everyone is having lots of fun. Anyone wishing to

donate cra supplies please drop at the front office.

Library News

Everyone is becoming familiar with the fortnightly

metable now where I teach a library/research/history

lesson to each class every two weeks. Students are

welcome and encouraged to borrow weekly with their

class on their library borrowing days from our wonderful

selec on of books.

Thursday KF, 5/6M

Our library leader Stars program is very popular this term

with over thirty 3‐6 students volunteering their me at

least 1 half of lunch per week, helping and organising our

library learning hub while working towards their leadership

achievement in their booklets. Keep an eye out for these

students achieving their protostar, star and superstar

levels. Our library is a fun dynamic learning space that

welcomes everyone with a range of ac vi es that our

library leaders organise, including reading to our younger

students.
