Arts program and students continue to produce an extraordinary range and balance of abilities, talents and accomplishments.

We celebrated Trinity’s 50th anniver-sary with several events including the Legacy Luncheon and Fifty-Fest. Attending the Legacy Luncheon were former faculty and administration, alumni, trustees, friends of the school and administrators who were so instrumental in creating the foundation on which Trinity

stands today. It was a wonderful occasion on which to renew old friendships and look to the future. On campus, Fifty-Fest showcased the wide array of student talents with lower, middle, and upper school student music and choral performances, art displays, and class projects. Alumni and former faculty gathered in the commons and

reminisced with classmates and faculty. Through all of the events, the love and devotion that so many have for Trinity was palpable, serving as further impetus for us to build an even brighter future rooted in the ideals that have been so important to all who have experienced Trinity School. Thanks go to Jane Williams and the 50th Anniversary committee for all their good work.

During the first quarter of the year, Trinity hosted the ISAS evaluation visit and subsequently was reaccredited. Having served on that visiting committee, I know first-hand how well the faculty and division heads prepared the self-study. At the end of the year, the Play Center also received its state license, which was the culmination of a full year’s work. In both cases, Trinity received accolades for the quality of its people and programs.

The 08-09 school year presented a unique combination of opportunities to celebrate the past, examine the present, and prepare for the future. All three reveal the resilience and character of the School and of those who care so much for Trinity.

The mid-year change in school head and the search for a new Head of Upper School during the second semester were undoubtedly distractions. Yet, the faculty and administrative leaders continued to keep their attention focused on the students and on providing the very best education available in Midland. As testimony to the confidence in the faculty, re-enrollment for 09-10 stands at 96%, which is remarkable given the economic uncertainty of our times. Student achievement and success was reflected in excellent college placement which included acceptances at highly competitive colleges and universities throughout the United States. A list of acceptances is included on the back cover.

We continued our commitment to academic rigor by offering 14 advanced placement courses. One of many highlights of the year was the second consecutive victory of our Quiz Show Team over Midland High School in regional competition sponsored by PBS. We also had our share of athletic success with state championships in football, girls basketball, boys golf and tennis, while the boys basketball and baseball teams also had strong winning seasons. Most notably, over 70% of the upper school students participated in an interscholastic sport. We sent 85 students to the ISAS Arts Festival where they joined with students from other independent schools to showcase their many talents. The Trinity Fine

As we look to the future, the renovation of All Saints Chapel reasserts our commitment to the faith tradition of the past, which remains a centerpiece of Trinity’s values. At the top of the Board of Trustees agenda is the search for a new Head of School. A search committee comprised of trustees, parents, and faculty representation has already begun work. I have committed to serve as Interim Head of School for two years in order to give the Board sufficient time to conduct a thorough and well-timed search process.

The trustees are also updating the strategic plan developed a year ago with a review of the academic, athletic, faith, and artistic components that comprise it. The refined plan will be completed in the fall and provide a launching point for future programs and campus development. A companion piece to the strategic process is the development of a long-range campus master plan that will include potential renovations and additions to improve existing programs and provide facility enhancements.

As we define future opportunities and needs that are necessary for Trinity to provide a first-rate education in the 21st century, it is obvious that we will need to expand our financial resources. Identifying the components to successfully finance independent schools is not a mystery. First, we have to adequately fund and responsibly manage current operations. This includes setting the annual tuition rate and, very importantly, reaching annual giving goals through the Trinity Fund to support the operating fund. One of our goals for this upcoming year is to clarify the case for annual giving. Tuition covers only 81.4% of the cost of each student, which means the remaining 18.6% must come from other revenue sources. Therefore annual giving is critical. Giving to the Trinity Fund for the 08-09 school year totaled approximately 4.8% of the operating revenue with a parent participation of 34%. If we are going to meet the

basic needs of our programs and operating budget for the 09-10 school year, more participation is necessary. Personnel costs comprise nearly 77% of the operating budget. As a labor intensive operation, personnel equals program. The only way to increase productivity in a school is to increase class size or reduce programs, both of which contradict the reasons you send your children to Trinity. In early fall, we will launch the annual giving effort. We will be calling on many of you to help solicit gifts, and we urge everyone to participate. If we can increase participation, the needed dollars will follow.

The other major components of school funding are endowment and capital giving for facilities. In the past year, the Trinity endowment has increased by $1 million due to the generosity of a major benefactor. However, our endowment of $3.6 million is small by any comparison with peer schools and provides only 2.4% of the school’s operating revenue. Designated capital gifts will be needed to meet future facility enhancements after they are developed in the strategic plan and the campus master plan. Though capital giving is essential to creating needed facilities, they do not relieve the operating budget.

Trinity is an excellent school that provides a unique resource to Midland. We cannot, however, settle for what has been accomplished, and we must constantly endeavor to improve what we already do well. This effort will never reach an end if we are to educate our children for the ever-growing demands that will be made on this generation and the next by an increasingly complex and challenging world.

I look forward to working with the trustees, faculty, students, and you for the next two years in advancing the vision of Trinity School.

Sincerely,

Geoffrey C. ButlerInterim Head of School

Alumni Seminar • Legacy Luncheon • Alumni Brunch • Fifty-Fest

On a gorgeous spring day in April, Trinity School celebrated its 50th anniversary with an open house that included performances from all sections of the school. The whole school was a stage for various events from chess to photography to individual singers and on to staged works that featured both familiar stars and a host of students

performing for the first time. The Lower School started the afternoon with delightful history of popular music covering the 50 years Trinity has been in existence. It started with “Blue Suede Shoes” featuring several Elvises (or Elvisi or perhaps Elvi?) replete with sideburns and little hip swivels. Next came that great celebration of raw happiness, “Twist and

CELEBRATING THE LEGACY

Shout.” Wherever John Lennon is, I am sure he was smiling at the final “aghh!” from several dozen young voices. “That’s the Way (I Like It)” rendered the Seventies perfectly.

One great feature of this history of popular music was that Lucy Bourland introduced various lyrics that directly related to Trinity, yet

which somehow fitted seamlessly with the songs. Thus the various economic crises that have occurred over the last few decades were highlighted, together with the uncertainty that they caused the school. And in the best popular music tradition everything ended well.

By the end of the Seventies section I heard several people in the audience wondering out loud what would be used of the next decade. I called it wrong, naming a British band while in fact the iconic “Thriller” by Michael Jackson was the song. The neck twitches and dance moves were rather precise and yet endearing at the same time. “Can’t Touch This” by MC Hammer included a little rap that celebrated all that Trinity does.

The atmosphere changed with the Upper School and their melancholy rendition of a medley from Sondheim’s “Sweeney Todd.” Twenty-first century Midland in April is perhaps as far away as you can get from 19th century London in the middle of winter, but the precise voices and shadows falling across the faces succeeded in bringing the uniquely ominous atmosphere of that great musical to the Trinity Prairie.

The Middle School parodied the Seventies in an often hilarious version of ABBA songs from the musical “Mama Mia.” From Afros to scarves to platform shoes they reminded all of us of the fashion terrors of that now distant decade.

In a fine reprise of some songs from “The Music Man,” the cast of this great production proved that even without costumes, lights, sets etc., they can still put on a better show than many others with all those at their disposal.

If a society, or school, can be judged by the quality and substance of its Art – and it can be partially – then Trinity is a fine and healthy place. A lovely afternoon of entertainment from a school that obviously brings out the artistic best in its students – from those destined for professional careers in entertainment to those with the butterflies of a first public performance.

In celebration of Trinity School’s 50th Anniversary, Danny Lee & Patti Jo Peck Wood (pictured above with the 2009 Peck Wakefield Award recipient) have donated funds to endow two new programs to benefit parents and teachers of the School.

The Sweetie & Hal Peck Memorial Speaker Series, named for Patti Wood’s pioneering parents, will underwrite a speaker series designed for parents of Trinity students and the greater community.

The Speaker Series was first held in fall 2005 as a creative concept by Patricia Maurer, Head of Preschool and Lower School. The message of Dr. Wendy Mogul, Blessings of a Skinned Knee, was enthusiastically received by parents, and the Trinity Parents Association has agreed to organize future events.

Trinity School has made every effort to recognize accurately the gifts received. If we have made an error, please know it is a slip of the pen and not the heart. Kindly report any omissions or errors to the Development Office at

432-697-3281 ext. 222 and accept our sincerest apologies. Every gift is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

A Professional Development Fund for faculty has been established to ensure quality continuing education for Trinity School faculty, staff, and administrators. Professional development has a direct impact on the quality of education that our students receive. In independent schools, professional development is comparable to the research and development expenditure in a business. This portion of the gift fulfills a recommendation in the ISAS accreditation report to broaden professional development opportunities for faculty and staff.

The Board of Trustees acknowledges with great gratitude this generous gift by Mr. and Mrs. Wood.

“I can no other answer make, but thanks and thanks.”

Four years in six worDs, {im}possiBle?Writing a memoir in exactly six words is based on the book, Not Quite What I Was Planning: Six-Word Memoirs by Writers Famous and Obscure by Larry Smith and Rachel Fershleiser. Earlier this year, Jennifer Hart challenged students with the task of describing in six words their years of Upper School.

Here are some of their responses:

Learned to learn from my mistakes

Last too long, not long enough

So many laughs, not enough time

Can’t believe it is already over

Had fun, have memories, have friends

It ended faster than I thought

Ready to go, want to stay

Started shy and finished with courage

Learned much, gained even more knowledge

Very little time makes fast memories
