Two Quotes
• EX POST Science (information for reference)
– “When philosophy paints its grey in grey, a form of life has aged, and grey in grey does not enable us to make it young again, but only to know it. The owl of Minerva begins to fly only at the coming of dusk”
– (Hegel in the introduction to “Philosophie des Rechts”)
• POLITICS
• EX ANTE Practice (information for action)
– “Philosophy hitherto has confined itself to interpreting the world: the point, however is to change it”
– (Marx in “”Theses on Feuerbach” (11))

The ecological approachThe Inspire Annexes
• An example: A project for the develop the Man‐made environment.
1. Will focus on the task at hand that is to improve mainly physical man‐made structures.
2. Will have to consider (seriously) the impact of (and the consequences for) on the broader context ( the natural environment, the economic system, and the socio‐cultural system.)
• Hypothesis:• That any project could be based on one standard GIISS
(Geographical integrated information system of systems) based an the same shared spatial data infrastructure.
1. That the Annexes to the Inspire directive describes a seed for such a system.
2. That this will require a development of a vision for the future of the Inspire annexes.
3. That this will require a development of the spatial data infrastructure specified by the Inspire project.
• Focus:• BE: Man‐made environment

“EU_grid” projectTo plot the results of the 2010‐11 European census on km grids
Two overriding tasks
1. The GIISS proposal– to develop the Inspire annexes into a useful tool for sustainable development.
1. A standard GIISS layer based object description could serve all projects according to an integrated ecological approach.
2. A standard GIISS ecological model should/could be hierarchically structured as a in a succession of standard scale intervals from global to local.
2. The Eugrid proposal– to develop the European statistical system to serve both administrative (accountant)
and scientific/practical purposes.
1. A shared system of full coverage discrete grids to serve as a foundation for all statistics to serve both official and scientific needs. (this should serve the description of all types of discrete phenomena)
2. A standard system of methods to delineate discrete observations into continuous phenomena on land and/or sea.
