HolidayGiftGuide

With the holiday season upon us,shoppers across the nation are gearing up for another season of swiping their creditcards. And if statistics are any indication, more people could be swiping those credit cards this season than ever before.

According to the United StatesCensus Bureau, the number of creditcardholders in the U.S. is growing. In 2000,there were 159 million credit cardholdersin the U.S., a figure that had risen to 173million by 2006 and was expected to grow to 181 million by the end of 2010.

With so many cardholders across thecountry, it’s no wonder during the holiday season so many swipes are seen. While itcan be tempting to put it all on plasticwhen holiday shopping, it can also bedangerous -- leading to nearlyunmanageable debt that can result inserious consequences down the road. Tomanage credit wisely this holiday season, consider the following tips.

• Avoid shopping sprees. Shoppingsprees are especially common during theholiday season, when parents are tempted to go overboard and get their kids moregifts than they can afford. While mostparents can relate to that, going overboard won’t do the family or the kids any goodcome January when the bills are due. What’s more, most adults who rememberthe holidays don’t recall what theyreceived as gifts, but do recall how thoseholidays were spent with family andfriends. So the lasting memory won’tnecessarily be what’s under the tree butwho was sitting around it.

• Avoid juggling credit cards.According to a 2010 survey from theFederal Reserve Bank of Boston, theaverage credit cardholder has 3.5 creditcards. And in many cases, cardholders feel the most successful means to using creditduring the holidays is to evenly distribute debt over each of their cards as opposed to putting it all on one card. However, thisisn’t really a solution as much as it is a way to mask the problem of accruing too much credit card debt during the holidays. Justbecause debt is piling up in shorter stacks on three cards instead of one large stackon one card doesn’t mean it’s not aproblem. If a credit card must be used, use the one with the lowest interest rate at the time of purchase.

• Always know the card’s limit. As

Use Credit Wisely When Holiday Shopping

mentioned above, many people have more than one credit card. But not all cards have the same credit limit, which can be

confusing for holders of multiple cards. To avoid going over the limit, which canresult in penalties and a negative mark on your credit report, view your most recentstatement before using a given card. As aresult of the recession, many credit cardcompanies began lowering lines of creditand, in some instances, even closingaccounts with poor histories. Check themost recent statement to learn the cardlimit and to determine the availablebalance, which is listed on the statementas well.

• Determine if the card offers “return protection.” When a credit card offers“return protection,” that means the cardissuer, and not the retailer, will take backitems in new condition up until 90 daysafter the original purchase. This is done to protect buyers when the retailer will nolonger accept returns. The original receipt, the item itself and the name and locationof the merchant from whom the item waspurchased is all that is typically required. In general, the dollar limit for returnprotection is $300 per item. Those whooften need return protection the most areearly shoppers who buy gifts for lovedones in advance of the typical holidayshopping season. Many retailers only offer full cash refunds for 30 days, so earlyshoppers should call their credit cardcompanies to determine their eligibilityfor return protection.

Christmas shopping. Some love itand some hate it. Regardless, it’sexpected that crowds will be part ofthe equation at some point during the holiday season. Avoiding the biggestcrowds is often the goal of many holi-day shoppers.

Today most shoppers are lookingto save time or money ... or both. Theyoften wonder what are the best timesto shop to realize the best deals andavoid the crowds. While Black Fridaymay offer low-low prices, crowds aredefinitely in abundance, with thou-sands of people anxious to score sav-ings. However, if smaller crowds aredesired, many retailers offer similarprices to Black Friday the week follow-ing Thanksgiving.

Shoppers who want to avoidcrowds as a main priority will want to

Avoid Crowds by Shopping Smart

shop weekday mornings. If it is pos-sible to take off a day in December toset aside for shopping, one shouldconsider it. Just avoid the hours of 11to 2. People who are at work mayspend their lunch hours catching upon shopping. While weekday shop-ping may not offer the sales that takeplace on the weekends, the stores willcertainly be less crowded.

Shoppers who know they will begiving gifts after the Christmas holi-day, be it to distant relatives or fara-way friends, can take advantage ofshopping after December 25. This canbe a great opportunity to save a lot ofmoney on purchases, as many itemsare deeply discounted after Christ-mas. Keep in mind, though, that crowdsstill may be large because of people mak-ing returns or cashing in on gift cards.

Every child wants the popular toys forChristmas. Each year parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles head to the stores in search of those sold-out items and must-have gifts.

So what gifts are bound to be snatchedfrom toy store shelves this season? Here are a few that kids are bound to be requesting.

• Moon Dough: Moon Sand is apopular molding product that doesn’t dryout. The trouble is, it tends to be messy.Moon Dough is a less sticky version that’seasier on clean-up.

• Tickle Me Elmo: That loveable Elmo is back in an ‘extreme’ version. He laughs, tells jokes and rolls to the ground in fits oflaughter. Elmo can even get back up to astanding position.

• “Twilight” Action Figures: Based onthe popular “Twilight” saga, these actionfigures are bound to be the next collectibles for kids who love “Bella,” “Jacob” and“Edward.” Girls and boys can continue toplay out the popular tale of vampires andwerewolves at home.

• Furby: Furby is back, probably as aresult of the popularity of last year’s ZhuZhu pets. This incarnation of Furby canreact with true emotions thanks to newtechnology.

• Furry Frenzies: Also banking on thepopularity of Zhu Zhu pets is Hasbro’sversion of electronic pets. These creatures

Hot Holiday Toys for 2010can interact with one another and scurryaround playsets, which are sold separately.

• Dance Star Mickey: In Elmo-likefashion, this doll dances, talks and moves.Kids who are enamored with all thingsDisney certainly will be requesting theirfavorite mouse.

• Extreme Micro RC Helicopter: Thisinfrared helicopter is the smallest on themarket and can dart and fly around insideor outdoors.

• Rock Band: The Beatles: Those wholove previous incarnations of Rock Bandand playing along to favorite songs willenjoy The Beatles version. It’s bound to be“Beatlemania” all over again!

• Star Wars Force Jedi Trainer: This toyuses brain wave technology and measureshow kids concentrate. Players follow thedirections to make their way toward Jedimaster.

Other toys and gaming systems arebound to be favorites again this year. Expect kids to be collecting and trading more SillyBandz in many different shape themes.Nintendo Wii needs no introduction. Withscores of game offerings, this gamingsystem is still tops on holiday gift lists.Expect to see different high-techeducational items for children, includingdigital book readers and coloring setsgeared toward helping kids learn writingand reading skills.

Donating is a popular way to showappreciation during the holiday season, but not every household has the funds to donate thisyear. In lieu of making a financial donation, agift of time and service is just as valuable.

Research indicates that 50 percent ofcharitable donations are made betweenThanksgiving and Christmas. During the season of hospitality and togetherness, makingcharitable donations is ever-present in manypeople’s minds. However, financial insecuritydue to the sluggish job market and economywill likely result in more people hoping tovolunteer their time instead of their financesthis holiday season.

Volunteering one’s time is a way to giveback without expending funds. Just as charities and other organizations are in need of money to operate their causes, they also need manpowerto put plans in action.

Busy people may think they don’t have the time to volunteer, but this is not the case.According to Charity Guide, a nonprofitorganization dedicated to promoting flexiblevolunteerism by inspiring and facilitating actsof kindness, volunteer work can take as little as 15 minutes per week and be based on a flexible schedule.

When considering volunteerism, individuals can pick a cause that is dear to their hearts. Organizations that raise awarenessabout medical conditions to animal rightsgroups are all charities that can use assistance.

The Gift of Volunteerism for the Holidays

Here are some ways the average person canvolunteer service.

Business owners who provide a particularproduct or service can donate such items to the charity. For example, a printing company canoffer to print letterhead or envelopes for anorganization. A baker can offer food forluncheons or fundraisers. Donation of timedoesn’t necessarily have to mean manning thephones.

Schools are often understaffed and can use the help of parents and other communitymembers. Volunteering beyond the typical callof duty can help school programs flourish.Volunteering time as a coach or as a librariancan ensure children have the resources andprograms for a well-rounded education.

Consider spending time with the elderly at a nearby assisted-living facility or as part of ahome-visitor program. Individuals who don’thave family nearby may appreciate a visit from someone, even if it’s just to sit and chat. This issomething the entire family can do, evenchildren.

Something as simple as carpooling oroffering to shop for busy people is another form of volunteer work that doesn’t require beingpart of a particular organization. Why notbabysit for a person who has to catch up onsome holiday shopping?

There are plenty of ways to contributewithout writing a check. The holiday season isthe perfect time of year to think in a giving way.

Holiday Gift Guide

14 Friday, November 26, 2010CITIZEN’S NEWS

The holidays are often a time ofexcitement and frenzied activity.Daily schedules are thrown out thewindow. While some people revel in this hustle and bustle, others wouldrather have a little more peace andquiet. The same can be said forhousehold pets.

Just as the holidays can disruptthe schedules of people, animals are affected, too. Some pets are moreadaptable to the changes takingplace. Others can get very stressedout from the activity.

Here are some challenges petscan face.

• Dietary changes. Pets could bestealing unhealthy snacks of peoplefood from the leftovers that remainfrom indulgent dinners. Also, because of shopping, traveling andsocial engagements, feeding sched-ules could be disruptive. For a petwith a delicate digestive system tobegin with, changes could be trou-blesome.

• Altered exercise regimen. Apet who may be used to long jauntsthrough the neighborhood may befaced with shorter trips in the back-yard. Lack of exercise can causebehavior problems from boredomand even depression.

• Trouble traveling. Some petsadore car rides, others want to runand hide at the sight of the family

Holiday Stress Affects Pets Too

mobile. The holidays can mean trav-eling to see distant family membersor taking vacations. Depending onthe animal, these extra trips couldbe nervewracking experiences.

• Extra “stuff.” What would theholidays be without decorations? Acat who loves to sleep on the win-dowsill of a bay window may soonfind her spot taken up by faux snowand Santa figurines. Dogs may won-der about the large evergreen treestationed in the middle of the livingroom. Pets have to get used to trin-kets and presents all around theirhome, taking up space and causingconfusion.

• Room and board. Pets that willnot be accompanying their ownerson holiday trips may find them-selves in a neighborhood kennel. This can be stressful for pets, espe-cially those not used to spendinghours in a cage.

The best way to help animalscope with the changes of the holi-days is to try to stick to a routine asmuch as possible. Like children, pets are soothed by a routine and know-ing what to expect next. Try to keepfeeding schedules, walks, playtime, and the like as close to normal aspossible. And when it’s not possible, spend extra moments lavishingattention on pets that may be feeling a bit left out this time of year.
