Our StoryWe are the comfort and warmth of good food and great friends, the laughter at the end of a delicious dinner, the conversation that makes everyone lean in closer while passing the wine; we are Sobremesa.

The word “sobremesa” literally means “over the table,” and captures the Spaniards’ art of savoring the conversation and company of others after a meal. Envisioned by our skilled designer, Mimi Robinson, and handcrafted by talented artisans around the globe, Sobremesa is excited to present our sustainable tabletop collection for the sophisticated epicureans who eat local but think global.

Sobremesa by Greenheart is a division of Greenheart International and is based on Greenheart’s social and environmental initiative for global change. After years of retail experience, we realized there was a need for high end, sustainable tableware that supports artisans with both a fair wage and healthy working conditions. Sobremesa’s collection is changing the lives of more than 100 artisans and their families while adding a personal touch to the cooking and dining experience.

Mimi Robinson is an international design consultant and principal of Mimi Robinson Design. As a designer and educator, Mimi brings extensive expertise in product development, design and artisan mentoring to the Sobremesa Collection.

Mimi has collaborated directly with artisan communities around the world for twenty-five years, creating products that utilize traditional skills and local materials to help strengthen their businesses and create economic opportunities. Known for her creative approach, Mimi develops innovative designs with a commitment to social, economic, cultural and environmental sustainability.

Mimi believes that art, culture and tradition keep us connected locally and globally, and make our lives richer.

CucharerosTranslated into “Spoonmakers,” Cuchareros’ Guatemalan artisan community was founded in 2000 to help health promoters and farmers create additional income to their social programs and families. Using their gifted talents in woodcarving, these artisans create unique serving utensils without the aid of any electric tools. The Cuchareros artisans have worked hard to establish sustainable social programs for their communities while taking special care to preserve the local forests using only certified wood sources.

copavicThe Recycled Glass Cooperative of Cantel, COPAVIC, began their inspiring work in 1976, in the small town of Cantel, Guatemala. Motivated to earn a living wage, acquire health insurance and provide for their families and communities, this cooperative took the initiative to apply for a loan to purchase land and build their kiln and work space. COPAVIC’s artisans have maintained a vision for a livelihood free of exploitation while protecting their own environment to transform recycled glass into gorgeous glassware.

El TunIn a small workshop in Antigua, Guatemala, the four brothers who make up the artisan community of El Tun have been working for the last twenty- five years to save their traditional method of weaving by creating handwoven textiles to share with homes around the world. Inspired by the rhythmic beating of the treadle foot loom while they work, El Tun translates into the traditional Guatemalan drum found throughout the country. With a passion for their craft, a desire to preserve a weaving method passed on through generations and motivation to create a sustainable and safe working environment for El Tun’s family of artisans, their artistic creations of linens and napkins bring more than a basic function to the table, they bring an inspiring story.

HiguerillaWood(Micandra spruceana) is a richly colored medium hard wood with light and dark tonal variations.

Teakwood (Tectona Grandis) is a golden brown wood sourced in Guatemala and is Smartwood Alliance and INAB (National Forestry Institute of Guatemala) certified.

CoffeeWood(coffea ababica) is a light colored wood that happens to be the perfect density needed to create long-lasting utensils with a smooth texture.

TasiscoWood (Perymenium grande Hemsl) is a reddish medium hard wood native to Guatemala. Wood is purchased from sustainable INAB certified sources.

Wood finish/California Prop 65: To ensure compliance with the California Prop 65 (Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986) to protect consumers against chemicals, Greenheart chose a natural wax finish that is a combination of beeswax, mineral oil, and carnauba wax (a natural wax from the carnauba palm native to the Amazon).

SustainabilityCoffeeWood:Winnerof2013EcoChoiceAwardforMostSensitiveUseofMaterialsatNYIGFThe main agricultural export in Guatemala is coffee. When the coffee trees mature and no longer provide the coffee yields that are required by the farm owners they are replaced by new seedlings. Cuchareros artisans creatively transform this otherwise discarded raw material into beautifully sculpted hand-carved utensils.

PaTSArtisanGroup:IncreasingtheValueofaTreeThe PaTS artisan group that Sobremesa works with has been working for over 11 years with indigenous Yanesha communities in the Palcazu Valley of Peru to develop hand-carved wood products from well-managed forests. The Palcazu Valley is surrounded by 3 significant protected areas—PaTS promotes the harvest of approximately one tree per acre in each 30-year cutting cycle to allow for natural regeneration of the ecosystem. “PaTS has helped the communities increase the value of a single tree from $30, which the Yanesha would receive from local loggers, to more than $2000 in artisan income.” (http://handeyemagazine.com/content/partnership-and-purpose)
