For year 12 students the week was all about raising aspirations, with trips and activities designed to help them think, research and plan their future after the 6 th form, including a variety of guest speakers from top universities to offer advice about their next steps. Many have now completed the first draft of their UCAS personal statement and are ready to come back to Y13 in September with a clear focus about what they need to achieve next year. Year 10 students were excellent ambassadors for the school during the week on their various work experience placements, all of which provided their own unique challenges as students experienced life in the real world of work. For Y7, Y8 & Y9 there were the usual exciting week-long trips to Gibraltar, France, Spain and Weymouth, as well as shorter camping and adventure expeditions to Blacklands and Ashdown Forest. In school, pupils also took part in a range of tough challenges throughout the week: Researching, designing and catering for a fashion show based on sustainability. Creating and performing a piece of theatre inspired by South African story telling. Participating in the BBC school sports report. Developing entrepreneurial skills in The Junior Apprentice challenge. Learning and performing circus and magic skills. A week-long travel training course. A week-long Art & Photography challenge. Students have now returned to school with exciting stories of camping in the rain, abseiling, rock- climbing and dragon-boating, practising their foreign languages skills and participating in music concerts and football games in various corners of Europe. It turned out to be a really successful week but the highlight had to be a live web link to South Africa on Friday afternoon, through which teachers and students thousands of miles away were able to watch our year 7 students performing their final theatre pieces to a packed audience in Glenthorne’s school hall. July 2010

Monday 12th July saw the start of Challenge Week and Glenthorne students certainly rose to the challenge! Over 30 different challenges were organised for students to participate in and all of them tested their resilience, reciproc-ity, resourcefulness, reflectivity, problem-solving and team-work. For year 12 students the week was all about raising aspirations, with trips and activities designed to help them think, research and plan their future after the 6th form, including a variety of guest speakers from top universities to offer advice about their next steps. Many have now completed the first draft of their UCAS personal statement and are ready to come back to Y13

in September with a clear focus about what they need to achieve next year. Year 10 students were excellent ambassadors for the school during the week on their various work experience placements, all of which provided their own unique challenges as students experienced life in the real world of work. Both employers and year 10 tutors have given very positive feedback about our students’ approach to this fantastic opportunity. For Y7, Y8 & Y9 there were the usual exciting week-long trips to Gibraltar, France, Spain and Weymouth, as well as shorter camping and adventure expeditions to Blacklands and Ashdown Forest.

Glenthorne opened their hearts to the less fortunate during the school's annual Charity Week by raising money for the school's chosen charity, Path Out of Poverty. Leading the events was the Head Student Team that did a fantastic job in bringing the school to-gether in the name of Charity; not only giving up their time but their freedom and dignity for the sake of a good cause. Monday saw the 6th form boys and teachers with clenched teeth as their leg hair was ripped from the root, leaving their pain-forsaken limbs a mix of silky smooth and patchy with fur. Tuesday was a day for student revenge: Sponge the Teacher! The pupils joined in their masses to give the volunteering victims a good drenching with sponges that were eventually cast aside and replaced with buckets of water. Wednesday was the 6th form slave auction with the stock also feature Mr. Parrish! The winner bid-der could use their slave to carry their bags, open doors and even fetch them McDonald's along with many other chores. The highest bid was £40 which was given for Lewis Wilson - a landslide increase over the previous £8 record! Also worth a mention was the £26 and £23 fetched by Lauren Goldsack and Jamie Miles. Thursday was Karaoke! Teachers and pupils came together to give their own renditions of their fa-vourite songs, including 'I Want to Break Free' by Mr. Glover and Mr. Simpson who fashioned a knight costume and a unique fairy king outfit, respectfully. Friday finished the week off with a World Cup themed mufti-day with pupils coming in as football-ers, fans and even a few WAGs strutted their way into the school. Glenthorne is renowned for its selflessness and generosity and the excitement of the past week is a sign that 2010 is no exception. Congratulations and thanks to all that helped and participated!

A Spoonful of Sugar A community event focussing on

nutrition and healthy eating

On 13th July 2010, Glenthorne played host to a community event attended by families from our community of schools and the local area. The event used a variety of strategies to dis-seminate information on nutritional health as well as a number of healthy eating activities for the whole family to engage with. The event was supported by a number of partners including SCOLA, Alive N Kicking, Deborah Norman – the borough’s nutritional health adviser, EcoLocal, Jenny Rowley from Sutton’s Advice and Inspection team, Wandle Valley School’s catering de-partment and students and our own ArtsOne students who performed an outstanding devised piece of drama.

The participants had the opportunity to try a wide range of healthy tasters and even got to take a number of recipes home with them. The evening was a great success and the evalua-tions clearly displayed participant learning and the new strategies that families were going to implement based on their new knowledge.

Families had the opportunity engage with interactive activities including weighing out the healthy portions of fruit and vegetables and had a chance of winning prizes.

This year’s Awards Evening proved to be a fitting celebration of our pupils’ many suc-cesses and achievements. Pupils, parents, staff, governors and many important guests, including the Mayor, Margaret Court, and Rowena Cox, a representative from the Humphrey Richardson-Taylor Trust, long-time sponsors of the school, were in buoyant mood after England’s triumph on the football pitch and came along to con-gratulate and encourage pupils for their success at school. Two of our Head Students, Jamie Miles and Seher Bellikli, led the whole presentation which looked back on pupils’ achievements over the past year and individual awards interspersed with some outstanding musical contributions, including Daniel Shao’s stunning flute rendition of Prelude 2 & 3 Op 18 composed by Muczynski, Glenthorne’s own Jazz Band playing ‘Night in Tunisia’ composed by Dizzy Gillespie and arranged by Hal Leonard and 10.46, a Glenthorne High School Rock Band, playing Paradise City. Our guest speaker, Paul Clements, who used to be a teacher at Glenthorne between 1995 and 2000 and is currently the coach of the Chelsea first team, was able to give pupils an inspirational message about the virtues of high aspirations supported by hard work and a purposeful attitude. Particularly motivational was his message that it’s never too late to achieve your goals if you have the right attitude and an abun-dance of determination. Congratulations to all our Award Winners and contributors and thank you to Paul Clement for making it such an inspirational evening.

AWARDS EVENING 2010

The sun shone on our Year 11s for their final assembly on 29th June. Our Year 11s turned up for the final assembly dressed in their finery. They gathered in the playground and lined up alphabetically one last time! They were treated to a nostalgic final assembly looking back on treasured memories of friends, teachers and funny moments over the last 5 years. Miss Butt organised the event and Mr Hume, Mrs Bayles and the Year 11 tutor team took it in turn to reminisce, but the best moments were the recollections of students and a sensational perform-ance by Polaroid, a Year 11 band. Later in the day, it was the Year 11 Prom, and they turned up in style at the Holiday Inn for an evening of fun and dancing. It has been a pleasure and privilege for all staff to be associated with the Year 11s. They are a wonderful year group and we will treasure fond memories of them. We wish them a happy and successful future. We look forward to seeing many of our Year 11s back in the 6th Form in September. We wish those who are leaving all the best for the future.

Page 6 GHS NEWS

We welcomed our new Year 7s, the class of 2010, on their Induction Day on 1st July and said goodbye to our Year 13s, the class of 2003, on Friday 2nd July. Our Year 13s have spent 7 years, nearly half their lives, at Glenthorne High School. They are leaving, but they will never be forgotten. They are irreplaceable and their impact and contribu-tion to the school have been remarkable. Most importantly, they have left their legacy in our memories:- • We will always treasure vivid memories of their football team, the most successful the

school has ever seen. • Their contribution to the Performing Arts, particularly through Music and Drama has been

enormous. • They were the first year group to go on the World Challenge trip to Peru in 2009 and the

COPE trip to South Africa also in 2009. The Senior Student team have organised so much for the school, Charity Week, 6th Form Parties, Curry Night, Caribbean Night, discos for Year 7 and 8 and the School and Year Coun-cils.

At their Leavers’ Assembly on Friday 1st July, Mr Hume, Mr Parrish and their tutors took a nos-talgic look back at the last 7 year, at the landmarks and achievements and students reminisced about their favourite memories. The event, organised by Miss MacGillivray, culminated in a champagne celebration and a toast to a happy and successful future. The Prom in the evening at Epsom Downs Racecourse was a refined affair with the students dressed to kill and was thoroughly enjoyed by staff and students alike. We wish all our Year 13 leavers all the best for the future, whether it be at university or their chosen career. The best of luck for their results on 19th August, if all goes well and they get the results they need, students will be off to universities all over the country including Bristol, Loughborough, Nottingham, King’s College London and the London School of Economics.

Glenthorne High School's Extended Services are going from strength to strength. In addition to all the work the school does around the core offer of extra curricular activities, community access, referral to external services and outside agencies, the element of Parent-ing Support this year has seen the addition of the 'Family BBQ' for all families of our new Year 7 cohort for September 2010. The photos show some of the 'buzz' that was created on Saturday 3rd July where new par-ents and carers joining the school had an informal opportunity to network and make new friends as did the new Year 7 pupils. Burgers and hotdogs were enjoyed by the 250 attendees. The new members of the Glenthorne community had a great day in the sunshine!

OFSTED Parents and Carers will be aware that our last OFSTED inspection was in November 2006. OFSTED has just carried out an “interim assessment” of the school which does not involve coming into school at all, but looking at exam results, attendance data and the school’s own self evaluation. OFSTED has concluded that the school has sustained its high performance and that we will not now be inspected until at least September 2011. Please see the attached letter from OFSTED to parents and carers.

ArtsOne: Billy Elliott – Saturday 3rd July One of the highlights of the last few weeks was ArtOne’s stunning performance of Billy El-liot. If we had been wondering how we would replace the talents of our Year 13 leavers, the answer was staring us in the face in this amazing performance. The ArtsOne performers all aged between 11 and 15 put on a captivating performance, at times hilarious and at others emotionally charged. Billy Elliot is a challenging musical for such young performers and requires great confidence and courage for many of the roles. The audience really appreciated the performance and special mention should go to Me-shach Henry, a thoroughly convincing Billy Elliot, Max Dandy, a hilarious Michael, Rachel Lloyd, a passionate and outspoken Mrs Wilkinson, and also Daniel Gage in his role as Tony. All the performers were outstanding and should be congratulated on such a memo-rable performance. Thanks also to the directors, particularly Miss West, for all her time and effort.

Art Exhibition The school’s annual Art Exhibition took place on 23rd June 2010. The exhibition was well sup-ported by parents, staff and governors who were impressed by the quality and diversity of the students’ work. Congratulations to all students for producing such outstanding work.

PARENT PAY Ms Sturges will be sending out ParentPay letters this week, these will include user names and passwords. Could I please ask you to take a couple of minutes to log on to ParentPay and register your child. ParentPay will enable you to pay for school trips, activities, school uniform, school meals and much more! You will be able to put money on your child’s lunch account and look at how your child is spending your money! As you are aware, the Finance office does not accept cheques any more, so Par-entPay is the safest, quickest and most convenient way of paying. Parent pay will give you a receipt and if you have more than one child you can link accounts. Thank you for your support.

Sports Day: 8th June 10 We’ve got used to it now; it always rains on Sports Day! Undeterred, the whole school walked down to the Sutton Arena via Rose Hill. Sports Day was soon in full swing with banners and posters of support and cheer-ing classmates. Many parents also attended to show their support, but they were all under cover! The first two hours were dry, but at 11.00am, umbrel-las went up and there was a heavy downpour for 20 minutes. The events continued, however, and there were some outstanding performances, notably: • Ella Shears – Yr 8 1500m with winning time of 5.50 • Scott Keary – Yr 8 800m with winning time of 2.36 Also, Toby Young had broken the Javelin Record for Yr 8 in an athletics meeting earlier this season, with a distance of 32.45m, and 8S were the top scoring tutor group from any year group. The day culminated in the relays and the staff race, which was much enjoyed by the pu-pils.

Re: Attendance As parents are aware, high attendance is a top priority at Glenthorne High School; only with high attendance can pupils achieve their full potential. In order to ensure good attendance from all pupils, we have reviewed our attendance policy. Our new policy will come into force from September 2010. We would like to emphasise the following changes: From September 2010, any unauthorised holiday in excess of 5 days within a twelve month period will incur a Fixed Penalty Notice.

• Please note it is the policy of the school not to authorise holidays except in very exceptional circumstances. • As this is a change in policy, could any family that has already booked a holiday that exceeds 5 days for the

next academic year please write to Miss Bray at the school as soon as possible to advise us of the booking. • Any term-time holidays taken from September onwards that are not brought to our attention before the sum-

mer holidays will be subject to the new policy. • Absences other than holidays will be referred to the Borough Attendance Service • Every effort will be made to help you improve your child’s attendance. However, failure to engage or to respond

to strategies will result in legal proceedings or fixed penalty notices.

Support and guidance on attendance is always available and if you have any questions about this or if you need any help to achieve an improvement in your child’s attendance, then please contact us to discuss the situation. If you wish to speak to the school’s Borough School Attendance Officer personally, please telephone 020 8770 6549 and ask to speak to the school’s attached Borough School Attendance Officer.
