How to Use this GuidebookThe guidebook will help you identify needs for our trip. It will help you know what to pack for yourself and for the efforts in Ghana. You will avoid problems when you are traveling if you use this guidebook. Please leave a copy of this guidebook with your family so they know how to contact us. Congratulations and thanks for joining the team. The Table of Contents is very useful.

This guidebook puts all of the information to have a successful trip in one place. It is useful to the people going on the mission trip and the family members back home. We will travel to starred cities of Accra, Tamale, and Bolgatanga on the map below. We will arrive in Accra and fly from Accra to Tamale the next day. We will drive to Bolgatanga from Tamale. The drive is three hours from Tamale to Bolgatanga. We plan to focus this team in Walter’s favorite villages of northern Ghana.

I’ve decided to show this team the far north of Ghana. The two major cities are Tamale and Bolgatanga. We can add a trip to the Mole Game Preserve if the team desires a day of “vacation.” The alternative trip would be to spend the trip in Sunyani in central Ghana.

Note: Starbow Airlines is a wonderful airline that flies within Ghana. We will save time by flying to the Northern Region of Ghana.

Tentative Itinerary in Ghana

We will be in Ghana for roughly eight days. We have two days of travel at the beginning and end of the trip.

Important Contact InformationThese are the names of the team members and the key contact at home. The Ghanaian phones can be reached by dialing 011 233 and removing the first zero (0) in the number. For example, the cell phone number for Mary Kay drops the zero and adds 011 233. You family can call our team cell phones as well as Michael’s cell phone. It is possible to text us as well. Email will probably be a good way to reach us since we will have a wireless modem. www.tel3.com has a decent calling card plan for calling us. Be careful just dialing us from your home or cell phone without checking on the fees ahead of time.

Woho eye sere (Ohay silly) You are funny and make me laugh.

ImmunizationsTetanus booster – every ten years, Hepatitus A – injection consisting of two shots. You must wait months for the booster shot. Hepatitus B – injection consists of three shots. The second shot requires waiting one month. The third shot can be given six months later. Malaria Prevention –Pills, taken before traveling, while there, and shortly after return. Follow your doctor’s instructions and preference of drugs. We discourage using Lariam. We recommend Mefloquine at 250 MG taken once per week. Malarone and Doxycycline anti-malarial0 drugs are fine daily drugs. Typhoid Fever can be oral Ty21a or an injection. Oral vaccine lasts longer than the typhoid fever shot. Yellow Fever, IPV or Polio, Mumps, Measles, and Rubella (MMR), Meningococcal (Meningitus), Tuberculosis (TB) . Please tell the health department that you are going to Ghana in West Africa. The list of shots may change due to new recommendations.

Checked Bags for GhanaThe maximum size for checked bags is 62 inches. The height + width + length = maximum dimension. For example, if your bag was 30 inches long, 5 inches wide, and 25 inches high, it would have a maximum dimension equal to 30+5+25 or 60 inches. We will take one checked bag and one carry on. The checked bag must weigh 50 pounds or less. Please pack as close to 50 pounds as possible. It helps if one of the bags can fit in the other bag for the trip home. Please make sure that all of your bags are labeled on the handle and inside the bag.

Carry-On Weight Limits (are shrinking)Please carry at least one change of clothes and your toiletries in your carry-on bag. The carry-on bag must be 45 linear inches such as 22”x14”x 9”. The weight must be below 40 lbs. The carry-on limits are reduced. Purses and SMALL briefcases will be permitted. Don’t expect to carry two large carry-on bags onto the plane. You will be shocked when they leave your bag behind. You will need to read the latest carry-on regulations since they change frequently. Laptops must be carry-on and can’t be checked. Also, please label all cameras and other high value items carried or included in the bags. You will not be allowed to lock your bags due to the US security standards. Do NOT use a carry-on if it doesn’t have wheels!

Weight Limit Exceptions or Excess BaggageMost airlines allow a maximum weight of 50 lbs. It is now the same for US and International flights. You will have a very difficult time exceeding the weight limit

now. It is not worth the effort or cost to exceed the weight limit. It does make sense to bring a collapsible bag which can be used to shift luggage around.

PassportPlease submit to the team leader a photocopy (on one sheet) of your passport photo page, social security card, and driver’s license. This copy will be destroyed after the mission trip to Ghana. This sheet of paper can help you to get another passport if your passport is lost or stolen on the trip. Please make sure that you have at least six months past your return date on your passport expiration date. You can check on your passport status at:http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/status/status_2567.html .

Back pack or large purse is good for carrying items Pocket knife or Swiss Army knife or multi-use tools MUST BE checked

Don’t Bring These ItemsBottled water, cokes, and sodas. We will buy safe water and soft drinks in

Ghana. We can even buy Fanta. The pineapple juice boxes are fantastic.Hair Dryers and battery powered Electric Shavers. Avoid electronic gadgets

that require a lot of power. The bathrooms don’t usually have electric outlets where we expect them. You will be amazed at how fast your hair will dry in Africa.

Toilet paper. Remove all debit cards, extra credit cards, bank cards, identity cards for

grocery stores and anything else that is not needed in Ghana. Jeans are VERY HOT. One pair is enough. Jeans weigh a lot. Bring light-weight pants instead.
